It's time for a war tax

With so many Republican chickenhawks wanting to pour more money into the black hole of Afghanistan, Congressman David Obey of Wisconsin has taken a powerful and smart position on the matter:

[He] made it clear that he is absolutely opposed to sending any more U.S. troops to Afghanistan and says if Obama decides to do that, he'll demand a new tax -- what he calls a "war surtax" -- to pay for it.

"On the merits, I think it is a mistake to deepen our involvement," Obey said. "But if we are going to do that, then at least we ought to pay for it. Because if we don't, if we don't pay for it, the cost of the Afghan war will wipe out every initiative we have to rebuild our own economy."

I sure hope the fiscal conservatives here in North Carolina, who are oh-so-worried about paying for health reform, will put our money where their mouths are and insist on a clear and measurable war tax to pay for cleaning up George Bush's mess.

WAR...WHAT IS IT GOOD FOR:

War
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing
War
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing
War is something that I despise
For it means destruction of innocent lives
For it means tears in thousands of mothers' eyes
When their sons go out to fight to give their lives

War
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing
Say it again
War
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing

War
It's nothing but a heartbreaker
War
Friend only to the undertaker
War is the enemy of all mankind
The thought of war blows my mind
Handed down from generation to generation
Induction destruction
Who wants to die

War
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing
Say it again
War
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing

War has shattered many young men's dreams
Made them disabled bitter and meanLife is too precious to be fighting wars
each day
War can't give life it can only take it away

War
It's nothing but a heartbreaker
War
Friend only to the undertaker
Peace love and understanding
There must be some place for these things today
They say we must fight to keep our freedom
But Lord there's gotta be a better way
That's better than
War

War
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing
Say it again
War
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing

It's about time

I've been arguing for a long time that the US isn't at war. Sure, our troops are in harms way...but other than some angst and anger at what we might or might not be doing depending on which side of the aisle you come from...how is the average joe affected?

There is no war rationing. There is no draft. There is no transitioning factories to manufacture war goods. There is no increased taxes, wage freezes, or any of the other nasty stuff that has happened in other wars.

The US either needs to step up and go to war, or get out. Trying to fight a war with both arms tied behind our back is a losing proposition as we've seen in our results to date.

I think Obey has a good idea, but only taxing the rich is a bad one. If he believes we need to pay for our military operations, he should tax everyone to pay for it. If he believes raising taxes will reduce support, raise everyone's taxes. Either EVERYONE in this country participates or no one should.

Personally, I vote for no one ;)

Looks like you got outvoted

This is how it feels to be part of the impotent minority. Bush III?

Strategy

The strategy on the right has always been to crush any opportunity for social reforms by sacking the treasury. Their preferred way is perpetual war. But, the occasional Wall street bailout just helps out here and there.
