wow, wouldn't have guested that. Guess love conquers all. :)

From the floor...

Not much to see down here. There are candidates, elected officials, and party officers down here (including some uncommitted supers), but the more interesting scene is up in the stands

Lots of Clinton and Obama signs, but not too many for the gubernatorial candidates. I see a handful of Perdue signs but no Moore signs.

The camera is scanning the crowd at times

It's so exciting. I swear I'm looking for Linda throwing spit balls at Brunette!

you're right Betsy,

it's actually a pretty damn good speech. It's just that his political capital has run out. That's what we are hearing--or not hearing--in that room.

that was so poignant

I really wish i was there watching Easley speak. The way he said thank you so many times and walked off the stage. It was a powerful moment. It was the end of something, and I'm not quite sure what. But it moved me in a strange way. Kind of a sad but relieving way.

I never thought of making conections there. I was waiting at the exit door for Brad to make that little side trip.

nctodc's picture

Eh.

I feel like the NC Democratic Party should use part of the profits from the JJ Dinner and take all the Democratic nominees to a communication/speechwriting camp...because I don't think anyone did really well.

Hagan was just awkward. She lacks pacing--she rushes through her notes as if she's talking to a mirror, not an actual live audience. She doesn't anticipate where the applause will come in--people would clap and she looked almost surprised. I'm still a fan of the Dorothy red slippers/Liddy Dole metaphor, though.

Neal was...eh. He's a better public speaker than Hagan, but I still find myself kind of underwhelmed by him. Plus, I didn't really get Jim Neal from his speech tonight, I got John Edwards-lite.

I was just happy to be able to see them online

Unfortunately, the feed went out a bit too much during Jim's speech for me to speak to his cadence or delivery. The only thing I remember thinking was that at one point after the sound had been off for several seconds and I thought he'd moved on, the sound came back on and he was still going through the whole list of people he was running for.

Hagan does need to work on her timing. I thought her tone of voice was good, but I agree with ProudProgressive that maybe she should have switched up her speech. It didn't seem to quite suit the event. I also like the ruby slippers metaphor

Bev sounded tired and her voice was weak. I thought her speech was fine - what I could hear of it.

Richard Moore seemed almost embarrassed, but I'm sure I'm reading that into what I saw.

I thought Bev's speech was tired.

The sound in the arena was awful, and she had to almost shout to be almost heard.

And let me tell all of my sistahs something. If you ever have to speak in public, especially in front of a huge audience, take this clue. I don't care if this is Carolina. Light Blue is not flattering in a pantsuit. Yes, I know, we're not supposed to judge female candidates on what they wear. I'm not judging their ability. But both Bev and Hillary wore a version of "Carolina Blue", and it just looked bad. Bev is so - petite - that I heard smurf jokes in the crowd around me. She looked like she was standing on tiptoe to reach the podium, which was not flattering, either. It was too bad, really. It's probably lovely on her when it's close up.

Well...I've never seen him in person

so not familiar with his typical body language.... Maybe embarrassed isn't the word. Maybe sheepish...but that could be his normal demeanor.

Also, Bev's suit looked fine on the screen and it did look like she needed a riser. Her voice sounded very tired. I think the whole video/in person thing makes a difference. Sadly, the feed went out a lot during Jim's and Bev's speeches. I think they must have fixed some of the problems before Hillary spoke b/c after Jim and Bev spoke the audio would only go out for a second or two at a time instead of 10-20 seconds.

I was on the floor, actually same table with Dr Frank. Lots to report. I'm sure there will be plenty of posts and photos. Highlight was meeting a soldier, former State Senator, in the middle of rotation, going back to Iraq Thursday.

Easley was booed, but it energized him to give a more passionate speech.
Moore sounded good, moreso towards the end of his speech, unfiltered by his campaign manager.
Obama and Clinton were different but great speakers.
Kay Hagan is better in person than video.
Jim Neal had a tough job opening. Did well.

Saw Brunette, Cubby, Frank Eaton, Jerimee. I was the guy with the bright tie.

The Obama crowd booed Mike Easley

Rather persistently.

Leslie H's picture

When they booed Easley

in my section the older Obama supporters I was around were not impressed and grumbled a few words. Then when the Obama section chanted during Clinton's speech, the older Obama supporters actually chastised those in our area who joined in ... asked them to "... respect her and give her her time. We'll get our chance when our man gets up there." I was glad they did that. Excitement and enthusiasm is infectious. Rudeness is not.

Agreed. I sure wish news clips would

do more to show the parts of Obama's and Clinton's speeches where they pledge to support the other against McSame.

And you know, Easley's voice was strained, but his passion about being a Democrat and electing Democrats so the Republicans can't turn back the clock on the progress we've made was so absolutely on the money, like the man or not, that I couldn't help but clap and yell out loud for him. It was heart felt and palpable message. It was the perfect message for that crowd of big, little, old and new Democrats last night.

Just got back home

Obama hit it out of the ball park. I shook His hand, so now I can never wash My right hand again.

90% of Hillary's supporters left as soon as she had spoken...rude if you ask Me.

Have to get up 5 hours from now. Have to be at local Obama HQ so I can send all the canvassers on the road. We'll be canvassing 1 0 am - 6 pm every day now.

I was surprised at that, too

I thought it was a pretty low-class thing to do. When I asked someone in the know, they said that there was a Clinton rally somewhere. I have no idea if that was the case, but I'll give them the benefit of the doubt.

(Hustling off to join others to canvass for Obama.)

Frank Eaton's picture

True

There was a Clinton rally across the street immediately following her speech.

Timing?

Does anyone know why they scheduled it for then? I understand, I suppose, that they're waging a come-from-behind campaign, but it seems disrespectful to schedule a rally right after her speech. That places her above the party and draws support away from other democrats.

The more I think about it, the more it bothers me. Am I working myself up over nothing?

Well....those who don't want to give her the benefit of the

doubt will say it was intentionally scheduled to disrupt Obama's speech. Those who do - or those who have tried to schedule for campaigns will know that when you have the candidate in one place you schedule as many events in that place as possible. The rally could have been scheduled to give those who couldn't afford the JJ dinner a chance to hear Hillary.

When Sean Astin was in town speaking for Hillary at the Donkey Dinner, they also scheduled a meet and greet and specifically said on the web site that it would be great for those who would not be at the dinner. Because Obama was speaking last he had the luxury of not having to worry about whether anything that was planned would interrupt someone else's speech.

I don't think it was rude at all for folks to leave or for the event to be planned that way. That's the nature of campaigns of this magnitude.

Robin Hayes lied. Nobody died, but thousands of folks lost their jobs.

My own, private echo chamber

Good points, all of them. I was amplifying my own negativity.

I bet that some of those Clinton supporters was a bit torn between hearing the rest of the program and attending the rally. Politics is about tough choices, after all. Some left, some stuck around.

Plus, it was getting pretty late. I arrived at about 9 and came just as Easley was speaking (if I remember correctly). I think that I left at around 11.

Thanks for nudging me back on the path of rationality, Betsy.

I support them both

being a JRE backer who just doesn't want to let go....waaaaaah.....I am finally at peace (hey....at least I'm not in pieces...) I'm actually very excited about our chances in the fall no matter who wins the nomination. We've already made history, so whatever happens from here on out is gravy. We will have to fight like hell whether Obama or Clinton wins the nomination, but we will break glass ceilings, brick walls and whatever else it takes to make one of them president come November.

Yup

At the risk of starting a love-fest (or at least an agreement-fest):

I'm on the side of whichever dem becomes the nominee. I happen to prefer Obama, but really I'm just itching to take on McCain. When I get discouraged with the current tenor of the campaign, I remind myself that we're blessed with a true embarrassment of riches - two historic candidates!

Brunette's picture

It went on a looooong, loooooong time

But it was a thrill to be there.

I was glad to see Greg and hoped that it meant I'd be lucky enough to meet other blunec-ers, but boy that crowd was thick. Linda, you and I SHALL meet face to face --sooner than later!

During Kay Hagan's speech, I was sitting facing her directly, and I thought she did fine. She doesn't have the kind of personality that transforms from the person you're talking to at a meeting to a podium pounder, but she seemed quite comfortable likewise genuinely excited to be where she was.

Jim Neal did his usual great job speaking, but he did seem, as someone else noted, to be pulling off Edwards' script. Also, honestly, between his speech -- which he delivered quite well and Hagan's -- which she did struggle with a bit, I found hers more "real" somehow. She seemed more sincere, though I don't know how to say why.

I thought Perdue's speech (and I know you expect this from me, but honestly, truly, this is my impression) was so saccarine that it almost came across as a parody. When she brought that stupid jar of pennies up and talked about the little girl "who said she believed in me!" and "And I want you to know that I wrote her and told her I believed in her, too!" BLECH. Thanks for letting us know, Bev. You're such a peach.

Moore was terrific and totally natural. He talked in practical terms about the state and strategies for keeping it fiscally sound. No gooey stories about his parents or children bearing pennies.

Hillary's speech was excellent and her delivery was excellent but I got bored with it.

Easley just kills me. As disturbed as I am by the shenanigans he has pulled, as deeply disappointed as I am in this governor, he still gets credit for knowing how to turn the charm on. His voice was very raspy at points, and it squeaked several times in a way that was most un-Easleyesque, but in eight years of watching this guy, I've never seen him put so much vigor into any public speech.

And he did well with the boo-ers. He knew what to say to convert the boos to cheers by the end of the speech, and he did that.

So my Dad turned to me and said, "Is he running for Vice-President." I said, "no, no, he wants a cabinet position." Then we watched Easley pound the podium some more and Dad said, "Are you sure he's not running for Vice President?" Well, no, not sure. He certainly did exert himself.

Obama. The place just went NUTS when he came out. The enthusiasm was heady stuff. I had heard chunks of his speech before, so was able to notice how danged tired I was getting and how my dog was waiting at home to be walked, but just when I thought I'd have to wind down and sit, he'd say something else that brought me back to my feet cheering and yelling like everyone else.

All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing
-Edmund Burke

I loved reading your assessment

I pretty much agree with you based on listening to them here.

"This one lil' girl didn'

"This one lil' girl didn' have any pennies to spare, but she wanted me to know she wanted me to win, so she gave me her lucky stone, so that I could rub it everyday."

If I ever pull that sort of stunt in a speech, somebody, anybody, shoot me.

Brunette's picture

AMEN

It was a double-ugh.

The contrast between what she said and Moore said was stark to me, but I think I was listening a little harder than a lot of people there, who were really just waiting for either Hillary or Barack.

So Moore paused, as though breaking from his script, which caused people to stop muttering and pay more attention, at which point he said, again as though deciding to abandon his speech, that he was "about done," which renewed the audience's willingness to give him a chance. Then he went on to say exactly what he was going to say anyway, but it was very, very good, very smart, and he got kudos for it.

I just wish he'd get the primary for it, but by this time I reckon everyone there was already decided (even if Bev's speech nauseated even hard core supporters).
