What does everyone think?
I wish this debate were broadcast to more people in NC.
I just watched the whole thing at Spartan tv
I thought a lot of things.
1. I'm glad I voted for Jim Neal.
2. I wish I'd heard more from Marcus Williams. He's a good speaker, very intelligent, and while I didn't like the whole 'choose to be gay' thing, I think that can be an education waiting to happen. A friend knows him and says he's a good man, a good attorney who stands up for the little guy. That's important to me, and important to know.
3. Kay Hagan sounded awfully proud of herself that she'd "vote for a hate crimes bill" I wonder which protected classes would be included? It sounded as if she answered two of our questions - hate crimes legislation and don't ask don't tell in the debate, but I think I'll go to her meet and greet tomorrow to ask her about Loving v. Virginia and some other stuff. That's assuming I get to sleep tonight. She really pissed me off by asserting over and over that she was running against Elizabeth Dole. Not until WE SAY YOU ARE, missy.
4. I'm glad I voted for Jim Neal. He totally pwned. (Am I allowed to say that?)

Kay Hagan was Arrogant
I know... I was really pissed when she said "I'm running against Elizabeth Dole." The moderator had to remind her that she hadn't won the primary yet.

Yeah, reminded by a kid about the age of her own son
Quite frankly, it made her look silly. "Well, we'll see on Monday."
Pfft. I guess we will.
No illusions - she's running tv ads, and she's the only woman in the race, that will work in her favor. But my entire exec committee is supporting Neal. >blink< That never happens. We never all agree. But we have, I'm pretty sure, on every race - which lets me know the world as we know it is going to end. :-D

Her son is in his 20's
She acted like she was 7.
The Dissent
I'll have to go back (once I'm on my own computer) and check these Youtube clips, but I watched most of the debate online and had a different interpretation of what she meant (assuming, of course, that I'm thinking of the right moment).
I think she was trying to stay above the fray--admittedly, it's easy to do that when you're the frontrunner--but I'd much rather see Democrats attack Dole than attack each other.
The lowest point of an otherwise very strong debate from Neal came when he said he was the only one that could beat Elizabeth Dole.

There are people in every time and every land who want to stop history in its tracks. They fear the future, mistrust the present, and invoke the security of the comfortable past which, in fact, never existed. - Robert F. Kennedy
In my opinon,
She sounded completely out of touch when the moderator reminded her that she had yet won the Democratic primary, and she said, basically, "well, we'll see about that". It was not her best moment.
Granted, I am a Jim Neal supporter, and wished that he would have handled that question better. but Hagan was shaken and smug. Simply continuing to insist that she was running against Elizabeth Dole, and not the three opponents on the stage beside her made me think she's ready for those Sunday Morning News Shows when the female Senator from NC just shrilly keeps insisting on her own point of view without interacting or listening to anyone around her.
It was sad, actually, because I've been an admirer of Kay Hagan, and will support her against Dole if she eventually wins next Tuesday. But in my opinion, both Marcus Williams and Jim Neal understood the intricacies of the issues better than she did. She repeated talking points over and over, while they made points. It was quite disappointing, and now I know why she's avoided a debate.

Take note. I won't support Kay Hagan in the general election.
I don't know what that means, but I can't possibly support that woman.
I Liked Marcus Williams as Well
Again, not for the gay is a choice thing... but he seemed to know a lot about the issues... moreso than Kay Hagan. Plus he was a very good debater, and did seem to want to fight for the little guy.
I thought a Marcus Williams - Jim Neal one on one debate would have been an amazing debate.
Yes, very much so.
I would really have liked to have seen more of a campaign from Mr. Williams. I hope he stays in NC Democratic politics. I like him - or at least what I see of him in the debate and on his website.

I made the right choice...
I voted for Neal this week as I found out I will be in Florida on Tuesday. I think I made the right choice. Hagan will get my vote if she wins on 5/6, but I'm rooting for Jim Neal.
Reactions
This is the first time I have seen either of them in an unstaged performance. I thought Hagan was brittle and uncomfortable talking about anything beyond simplistic policy. I have heard her called telegenic a lot, and I do not see it. I wish Neal had put more of his own money into this primary; even if he ultimately doesn't win more people statewide would know who he is and his profile would be considerably raised. I feel like Hagan is not ready for this after being plucked out by the national party. I'm sure there is heavy coaching going on, but you can't manufacture talent.
I'm not sure he has more money
Everybody seems to think he's rich. That's not my understanding - of course, it's all relative. He's certainly not as well to do as Kay.
A few hundred thousand dollars
I was thinking about $200k or $300k maybe. He actually didn't self-fund to any significant extent right?
"It's a cost-benefit question; I have to read up on it."
is not a good answer to any question about any high-profile issue.
