Kay Hagan votes to circumvent her own law

Today the United States Senate rejected an amendment to the Defense Authorization Bill which would have undermined public safety and the safety of our police.  This amendment, known as the Thune Amendment, would allow the transport of concealed weapons across state lines, even by persons legally barred from possessing guns in the state.

The Thune Amendment threatened to strip states of the right to protect their own citizens.  Fortunately thirty-nine Senators recognized this bill as a dangerous pathway to illegal gun trafficking. The bill was opposed by 450 mayors across America, including 8 in North Carolina

Unfortunately, both of North Carolina’s Senators voted for a piece of legislation that puts law enforcement in harm's way.

Sue Baker, of North Carolinians Against Gun Violence:

"What happened to states' rights? North Carolina citizens trust that laws passed by our state legislature protect the public and keep us safe.  The Thune Amendment would have made our North Carolina conceal carry laws obsolete."

Senator Kay Hagan not only voted to circumvent North Carolina law, she attempted to nullify legislation her own legislation passed when she was a NC Senator.  In 2003 Senator Hagan voted in support of Senate Bill 33 which created standards and guidelines for which states conceal carry permits were valid in North Carolina.  Today Senator Hagan attempted to take away North Carolina’s right to determine these same standards.

You beat me to it. :)

You know, I saw this being wagged about on tv last night, but I just assumed it would be laughed off the floor of the Senate. I can't believe Kay voted for this.

Can't believe she voted for this?

You must be living in a parallel universe, old friend.

Not quite true

The comment stating that the Thune amendment "would allow the transport of concealed weapons across state lines, even by persons legally barred from possessing guns in the state" is incorrect.

Thune's amendment specifically states:

``(b) A person carrying a concealed firearm under this section shall--

``(1) in a State that does not prohibit the carrying of a concealed firearms by residents of the State for lawful purposes, be entitled to carry such firearm subject to the same laws and conditions that govern the specific places and manner in which a firearm may be carried by a resident of the State; or

``(2) in a State that allows residents of the State to obtain licenses or permits to carry concealed firearms, be entitled to carry such a firearm subject to the same laws and conditions that govern specific places and manner in which a firearm may be carried by a person issued a permit by the State in which the firearm is carried.

The amendment DOES NOT supercede any concealed carry law in any state. It just says that if you have a CCW permit from NC (for example), you would be allowed to carry concealed in another state with similar laws.

It's ok to disagree with the Thune Amendment. But let's stay accurate in the arguments.

State's Rights!

When Republicans run rough-shod over "state's rights" and Democrats are suddenly concerned with overreaching Federal power.. it's just so amusing.

You're confused Dr.Q

This really isn't about state's rights, it's about hypocrisy.

Menendez, Lautenberg lead

she attempted to nullify legislation her own legislation passed when she was a NC Senator.
