Lake Junaluska local control blocked by NCGOP

Among the central government planning actions taken by the Radical Republicans in this session, the desire of Lake Junaluska residents to be annexed to the Town of Waynesville has flown somewhat under the radar.

For about two years, residents of the Methodist assembly at Lake Junaluska have been working on a plan to allow the community of about 800 to be annexed into the Town of Waynesville. Both the town and the Lake community spent months working out details, in what appears to be an open and transparent process. A bill allowing the annexation passed the Senate, with the support of Sen. Jim Davis (R-Macon) who represents most of Haywood County. The bill also had the support of Rep. Joe Sam Queen (D-Haywood), who represents all the affected land in both the town and at Lake Junaluska.

Well, apparently a few disgruntled souls, upset to be in the minority, decided to approach Rep. Michelle Presnell (R-Yancey). Ms. Presnell's district does include part of Haywood County, but none of either Lake Junaluska or Waynesville. Ms. Presnell decided to hold up the annexation, apparently because she could.

Almost everyone here is puzzled over Mr. Presnell's objections. Both the Smoky Mountain News and The Mountaineer, our local newspapers in Haywood County, have opined against Rep. Presnell's interjection into what is surely a local matter.

This article captures the frustration of Lake Junaluska residents and property owners.

Comments

It should be noted...

...that Lake Junaluska residents vote overwhelmingly Democrat, and the Town of Waynesville Mayor and 4 of 5 aldermen are Democrats.....more GOP punishment of Democrats, it seems to me.

Wake rep guts local bill for guilford same thing

One thing that totally pissed me off that did not get reported anywhere but at my blog triadwatch was seeing wake county republican rep. Marilyn Avila amend a local bill for Guilford County so she can completely gut the bill to insert the lobbyist nc press bill which makes it more of a monopoly for the paid newspapers all over this state . Here is the post enjoy the picture as well

Disgusting

This gutting of bills to replace the text with something unrelated is disgusting. It's not transparent and it's not how government should work. That's how they did the abortion bill and several others. No public notice, surprise the opposition, ram it through.

It's doubly disgusting when a local bill is gutted by someone who's not local just so she can serve her corporate masters. I guess Ms. Avila need to point to some accomplishment during this session; previously her big win was being part of the crowd to name an official new state marsupial (a creature more friendly and intelligent than the bulk of the NC GOP crowd).

Hypocrites

Isn't this supposed to be the "small government" party? Laissez faire and all that? Actually, they're all control freaks who insist on having things their way. They're taking Asheville's water and Charlotte's airport and while they are blocking the Waynesville annexation, they're forcing Durham to annex a development the city doesn't want.

As for Michele Presnell's reasons, recall that she's the "Islamic prayer = terrorism" nut who wants to force you to have your rapist's child, so maybe her reasons trace to her lack of mental clarity or her mean streak (if it was just attention she was after, she's already been named The Old Backward State Folk Art).

Apparently

Red state now means Soviet style central planning, the opposite of what most people have been led to believe their GOP stands for.
