Larry Kissell, Presumptive Nominee
Jim Morrill at the Charlotte Observer lets us know that Larry Kissell's path through primary season has opened up like the Red Sea. I'm not sure who plays the part of Moses in all this, but it means that Larry's resources will be leveled against Robin Hayes and no one else.
"Charlotte lawyer Chris Kouri called Kissell and told him he won't run against him this year. Kouri ran against Hayes as the Democratic nominee in 2002. "I don't think it's any secret that I've looked at running in the 8th District," says Kouri, adding that he's now fully behind Kissell. He wouldn't elaborate on why he changed his mind.
Another Democrat who planned to run this year is John Autry, a liberal activist who lost to Kissell in 2006. After campaigning for much of the past year, he says he's sitting this race out for health reasons.
Meanwhile, party leaders are coming to Kissell's support at a March 19 fundraiser. Every Democratic member of Congress from the Carolinas -- including Reps. Mel Watt, John Spratt, Jim Clyburn and Heath Shuler -- have signed on as co-sponsors of the event at the home of Charlotte investor Mark Erwin.
And Democratic strategist James Carville headlines a Kissell fundraiser in the Triangle on March 29.
"Everyone has been so supportive of Larry," spokesman Steve Hudson said. "They're just determined not to let this race slip the national party’s fingers again."
For everyone who bemoaned the lack of support from the Democratic Party, know that your cries were heard. Your work last go 'round has created an army of support for Larry Kissell.
Hayes is toast.

wow. wish I had the dough to make that fundraiser.
What a great collection of Democrats (and some DINOs) to meet and discuss.

Thanks for posting Gordon
I've been busy this evening.
Chris was very good to call Larry and offer his support. I know it's tempting after - Larry wounded Hayes - for others to smell blood and want to get in on the kill. The problem for Chris is that he ran so long ago his name recognition has suffered. That and he hasn't started raising money or campaigning while Larry never really stopped.
I hope John Autry is OK. I hadn't heard that he was ill or had health concerns, so it must have been something that either came up suddenly or that hasn't been discussed publicly. I do wish him the best.
Thanks, Gordon
I was wondering about a primary in the 8th district (being that I live in another congressional district, following this one was always very interesting based upon the involved candidates who were running at the time)this election season. Being that all of the other presumptive candidates have decided to concentrate on other priorities beyond politics, it would make for choosing a candidate much easier.
I offer get well wishes for Mr. Autry. Hopefully, he can get back into politics real soon.
I have two suggestions for Mr. Kouri, since he has been out of the political spotlight for a very long time, he can start making plans to run for either Charlotte City council seat or for Mayor of Charlotte (as Mayor McCrory might be out of work in '09).
