Now, why should Mr. Bush fear that insuring uninsured children would lead to a further “federalization” of health care, even though nothing like that is actually in either the Senate plan or the House plan? It’s not because he thinks the plans wouldn’t work. It’s because he’s afraid that they would. That is, he fears that voters, having seen how the government can help children, would ask why it can’t do the same for adults.

→UNC gets serious about cancer. I recently heard Lance Armstrong quote a statistic that something like 85% of people say "cancer" when asked what they are most afraid of in life.
Cancer patients: $25m this year, $40M next and $50M thereafter to fund what supporters hope will become one of the nation's top five cancer centers at UNC Chapel Hill. Lawmakers said today the new center will not only conduct groundbreaking research, it'll treat all North Carolinians, regardless of insurance or economic status.

He was seen often. Alone. Always alone. Jogging in nearby Center Harbor. Alone. Having holidayed there, I know the area. Through the trees, down a quiet country road, is the main drag where sits the town's lone bagel shop. Its owner is an ex-New Yorker. Everyone goes there for coffee. He did, too. But all alone. Not even with an assistant, a secretary, a bodyguard - nobody. Certainly no Secret Service.

→Why is it that African markets are so undeveloped?
African markets are so undeveloped that the opportunity there is still quite small. According to Stanlib, a South African asset-management group, the market capitalisation of the whole continent is just $800 billion, of which South Africa itself makes up $600 billion. The rest of the continent’s markets, in other words, are worth a good deal less than Exxon Mobil. Put another way, China could buy every African quoted company with its foreign-exchange reserves.

UNC getting serious about cancer?
Boyhowdy, you wouldn't know it from the health care my partner is getting. He had a pap smear in January, the results of which have been in his file since then. The last sentence on the lab report was that the amount and type of cancerous cells were "worrisome" and may lead to a major lesion.
When did his doctor deem it necessary to inform him of this very serious finding?
Yesterday, the 30th of July.
Needless to say, we're more than freaked-out, angry and feel betrayed.
Rep Insko, I don't know if your staffers read BlueNC, but this is exactly the sort of ongoing situation we talked about at the round table after we saw Sicko. UNC-CH is in your district; while we are not, you still have an interest in this case. This is just one more vignette to add to the litany of poor excuses for medicine we told you about last month at the round table.
I honestly don't know if we can take much more of what is masquerading as "health care" in NC any more.

That sucks.
I really can't say anything more about it than that. Damn.
