Live-Blog with Colonel Dennis Nielsen - Question Thread

Please join us this evening for a live-blog chat with retired Colonel Dennis Nielsen at 7:00 p.m. Colonel Nielsen joined us in Chapel Hill for our blogger bash on Sunday. He is running a grassroots campaign without taking any special interest money or soliciting contributions from individuals. He simply wants his voice to be heard. Here is our chance to listen.

Leave your questions on this thread and join us again this evening.

Colonel, if you were elected Governor

What would your top three priorities for North Carolina be? (soft ball question)

Be the change you wish to see in the world. --Gandhi
Pointing at Naked Emperors

Robert P.'s picture

Colonel, when you aren't elected Governor...

what message do you want people to take from your campaign? If you want your voice to be heard, what will you be saying?

Robert

Robert don’t be so gloomy, I haven’t lost yet. I believe in taking action. If there is something I don’t like I don’t want to sit around at the bar and complain. I see there needs to be changes made and rather than complain I am going to stand up to the plate and try. By the way the best part of running is meeting wonderful people like many of you.

to Linda

Linda, very nice meeting you on Sunday. .
First let me say I will try to answer all your questions. If I do not have to be careful with my spelling and grammar I can go much faster, so forgive my English OK here is the answer to the softball question. Top Three the economy, the economy the economy. Al the others will not work well until we can get control of our economy. OK I will tell U about 1 and 2. Education and illegal immigration. My views on these are expanded on my web site. I believe in choice in education and having a combination of public, private and charter schools, money to follow the child so low income parents have the same chance to educate their children the more affluent has. Economy: state spending increased 42 % since 2001, we must turn that around I will do that by lowering spending, transferring some state jobs/agencies to private industry. Immigration: I will follow the law and get tough on employers more on my web site as this is getting too long.

Colonel, why all the guns?

Your stance on gun laws irks me in many ways. Not only do you push for the expedition of concealed carry permits, but you want to expand the law to allow concealed weapons in public places, including locations in which local and state employees are employed. Correct me if I'm wrong, but more guns, in more places, sooner, and with less attention drawn to the application process, it seems like a terrible idea for ensuring the safety of our citizens. I would hope that as a retired military man, you'd understand the power or these weapons, and the importance on safety and precaution. Can you please explain to me just how you plan to keep these guns in the right places, and in the hands of their rightful owners safely?

Christopher

CCW permit holders commit less crimes per capita than any other group including law enforcement. You know if the Chinese never invented gun powder over 4,000 yrs ago and we never made a gun or a combat airplane or a carrier maybe we would all be better off, but that is not how it is. Law Abiding (LA) gun owners must be allowed to protect themselves and their families as we get into a much more dangerous world. The commercial where the burglar breaks in and they call ADT is silly by the time they” send help” the wife and kids will be raped and murdered; I won’t allow that to happen to my family. Gun owners must be responsible for their weapons and we must allow all that want weapons who are LA to have them.

Denny: is there is

Denny: is there is reaonable limit to the number and type of weapons that an individual can own? WRT the Second Amendment, should owners of hunting and personal weapons be required to join and particiapte in the state militia?

drlefty

The kinds sure we must restrict the kinds, ie no granade launchers etc. I don't know about numbers if somewantst osepndhis own money and buy a dozen handguns it is his/her right.

I don't think they should be required to join any particuliar group or organization

Gun Laws

While not a resident of North Carolina, I have visited it many times and think it is a great place. In Florida, the gun laws are quite specific: If you feel threatened by someone, you can take whatever course of action you deem necessary to protect yourself and your family. The State Legislature has also just enacted a new law that allows individuals to carry guns in their vehicles onto an employer's worksite. My basic philosophy is that "I would rather have a gun and not need it, than to need it and not have it!"

Women's CHOICE

Hi Colonel,

I believe you've already told me where you stand, but for the sake of the rest of the bloggers here, will you state your opinion as to whether women's right to choose abortion should be protected by state and federal law?

Brunette

ms Brunette

Ms Brunette, nice to talk with you again. Did you attend the bash on Sunday I hoped I would see you there as I know you don’t look like a flower. Where you there? Choice; right to abortion is a law and I will uphold the law as governor.

Brunette's picture

DODGER!!!!!!

I thought someone said you weren't a politician.

I asked for your opinion. You dodged. Please answer the question.

Regardless of what its current legal status is, do you support the right of a woman to choose abortion?

No, I wasn't there Sunday.

(I really didn't think you'd dodge the question, so I'm a little disappointed in you, Colonel)

Brunette

-Edmund Burke

Since when should the

Since when should the governement get into a woman's uterus? As governor he is not in a position to interpert the law (I hope). He should be in a position to enforce it and influence it, but once the law is enacted he has the absolute obligation to follow it...to the letter!

Brunette's picture

I asked the Colonel

I asked the Colonel a straight question, and I want a straight answer, not a political dodge.

What are you here for, driefty, to run interference? Please don't. I think the Colonel is a big boy and can handle the questions by himself, don't you?

All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing
-Edmund Burke

My apologies

My apologies

Democrat vs. Republican

Why are you running as a Democrat when you espouse mostly Republican ideals?

teepack

Too much R or D we must get away from party and concentrate on people. I offer a place/home for conservative D’s there are millions out here

Perhaps it is time to look

Perhaps it is time to look beyond blue and red (in moderation) ad copare our specific views with any given politician. Integrity should play a greater part than single-issues. I consider myself very liberal socially but fiscally conservative; on the WRAL comparison I came out closest to Nielsen and way off line with my true-blue party regulars.

Hello all

Hello all

glad to see ya here drlefty

Hi Colonel!

Glad you could make it. I have more questions.

Robin Hayes lied. Nobody died, but thousands of folks lost their jobs.

Colonel Nielsen

Thank you for visiting with us. IHa! Edit.....I know what you're running for....I'm trying to multi task!

Colonel

Sorry, never heard of you. Where are you from. What did you do to help NC. What is your stand on raising my taxes ?

speedbugy

I helped NC by choosing ot move here.

I am for no tax increases in the first 2 yrs then most likely none for the next 2.

The state has t ocut spending. Spending rose over 42 % since 2001. We in our personal lives must cut back teh state must do the same

Betsy

I did not know the gov served on committees but budget and finance, probably some mental health comm, and disaster prep

Ahhh...I messed up your response

I'm thinking about Senators and I know you're running for governor. I will change that to ask about your priorities and those above are perfect. Sorry for the mess up. The Senate candidates are trying to compete with you for my attention and I do apologize.

Robin Hayes lied. Nobody died, but thousands of folks lost their jobs.

Betsy

you can compete for my attention anytime.

Thank you....

I can multi-task....but apparently I can't multi-think.

Robin Hayes lied. Nobody died, but thousands of folks lost their jobs.

Denny is right on the mark

Denny is right on the mark re; the economy. We disagree on his stance on guns and I really don't care about 'choice' except to say that it is no business of the government.

We may disagree on details but it seems to this liberal that it is time to elect a non-politician.

Guns...YES

Like the old saying. If you do away with guns, only criminals will have them. We have a right to defend ourselves. I am with you on that one.

speedbugy

The CCW laws need t obe relazed, It doesn't make sense I cannot have a weapon in my car when I go to the landfill

Yeah you never know when you

Yeah you never know when you are going to attacked by a rabid seagull!

What's your position on mercenaries?

Should the US Government be in the business of hiring private armed contractors as part of waging war?

James

PS We enjoyed meeting you Sunday. My daughter says you are a nice guy!

James

Nice meeting you also and everyone else too.

As Drlefty knows wars are ugly things, we wage them to win and do not play fair. We should hire private contractors but they must be the RIGHT contractors. Some are too close to teh administration that can be a problem.

Ofcourse this is nothing new Air America in Viet Nam and others have gone on for a long time.

Above you mentioned mental health

That has been a hot topic here because we have folks who work in the industry or who work with folks who have fallen through the cracks. Are you fully familiar with the problems with the current system. What's the first thing to do to start fixing the problems with the current system?

Betsy

Not as familair as I should be and that is teh same for most gov candidates.

It seems we treat those wit hdisabilities, mental illness and substance abuse underthe same umbrella. I would divide these inot 3 seperate programs to insure each got the care they need and all are treated with respect and dignity.

There is a lot more to say on this. leadership is another key to teh fix

Brunette's picture

Again, I would appreciate a straight answer.

Colonel,

What is your position on a woman's right to choose? Do you believe she should have the right to choose abortion?

Brunette

All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing
-Edmund Burke

Brunette

As gov I would support the current laws in place which allow a woman t ochoose.

Or are you asking my persoanl views?

Brunette's picture

Yes, I think you know I'm asking for your views

I didn't ask what the governor's responsibilities were. I asked for your views.

All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing
-Edmund Burke

I missed somehting. What

I missed somehting. What does this have to do with state government and leadership? No, I not running interference, I just want to stick to the responsibilities and authority of the governor.

For example

Let's say the legislature started chipping away at the edges of choice and sent bills to the governor's desk. I want a governor who would not sign any bills that interfere with a woman's right to choose how to deal with her own pregnancy.

Brunette's picture

Governor's influence

It's not just that he could sign or not sign bills. It's also that he has multiple opportunities to appoint persons to influential positions on boards. There are numerous ways that a governor can further his own agenda.

All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing
-Edmund Burke

Ms Brunette

Is that really a picture of you????

Attracting new business and jobs

What will you do to bring good solid jobs to North Carolina?

Jobs Jobs and more Jobs

There are alot of jobs but just in the wrong place. In RTP they hire many persons from other countries becasue they cannot fill the jobs here. Some are 100K +

The problem here starts with education you can't fill high tech "good" jobs with HS dropouts. We must first fix teh education system. I am afraid we have lost a whole generation that we may never recover.

Some will have to go where teh jobs are.

Finally small bus is the lifeblood for our economy. tax incentives lowering teh bus tax rate to 5% will help and allowing certain tax deduction for small bus

What about tuition free

What about tuition free junior college (2 years) for all NC high school grads?

my responses

You might notice I ahve provided more responses than Bev Perdue did in the whole hr, guess I am not as wordy

Hi Mike

Glad to see ya here. Let's have lunch again

Brunette's picture

I'm still waiting

C'mon, Colonel. Get real.

Brunette's picture

Colonel?

I'm not interested in answering your friend driefty, but I am interested in your response to my question.

You answer mine, and I'll answer yours.

Ms Brunette

Don't you like drlefty he is a great guy.

Citizen reviews

Denny; you've talked about volunteer citizen committees to review government functions. I have heard criticism that only the retired would have time to participate...and we (the AARP set) have our own agenda. Whatever that is.

Please comment on your idea for more direct involvement by 'just us citizens/taxpayers'

committees

I would allow any citizen who has time to join in a group. These would be citizesn not poitical party hacks or goverment cronies.

Average citizens have many answers to the problems in our state and i want to hear from you.

It would not be long commitment but take one issue and solve it and bring your answers forward.

We need more open government

What about incentives?

I can agree with tax incentives for small businesses, but what about the sweetheart deals we're offering large companies to come to NC even when they aren't really bringing that many jobs?

Betsy

I say no to Dell and Google, thye brought 200 and 1000 jobs (not yet but are supposed to) but I don't see how thsi helped all of NC. Those in teh east did not get anything from it.

Hello to teh great safetini

Hello

Thanks for blogging with us!

It seems your position on guns, abortion and private contractors are not consistent with mine, but I do appreciate you stopping in to blog with us.

www.MoBetterChange.blogspot.com

Amy

Tell me what you think about guns I am interested.

Abortion you don't like the current law?

Thank you for yor comments.

I'm pro choice

I'm concerned about your answers on this issue. You seem to be avoiding committing to ensuring that a woman's right to choose is not widdled away at.

Many states have implemented anti choice legistlation, including restrictions on birth control. Would you be willing to fight against any such legislation?

As far as gun control, Christopher said it well:

Your stance on gun laws irks me in many ways. Not only do you push for the expedition of concealed carry permits, but you want to expand the law to allow concealed weapons in public places, including locations in which local and state employees are employed. Correct me if I'm wrong, but more guns, in more places, sooner, and with less attention drawn to the application process, it seems like a terrible idea for ensuring the safety of our citizens.

www.MoBetterChange.blogspot.com

Amy

Yes I would be willing to fight against legislation that includes restriction on birth control.

So to make it clear to me you don't believe in the personal ownership of weapons for self defense?

I didn't say that

I didn't say that I'm opposed to owning guns. I said, that I agree with Christopher that it is a mistake making it an easier and faster process to gain gun permits for concealed weapons. We need more gun control, not less.

On abortion, I didn't mean just legislation that restricts access to birth control, but any new legislation that puts limits on a woman's right to choose.

It seems I'm not the only one not clear on where you really stand on this issue.

www.MoBetterChange.blogspot.com

Thank you, Amy.

You're much braver than me, in delving into those Republican gun talking points. Also, it's clear that the Colonel does not have a solid stance on women's rights.

Well...

Not sure about brave part. ;)

But, Republican talking points do make my skin crawl.

Brunette's picture

Ok, so I'll ask again.

I notice that Driefty and Safetini signed up within a short while of this "live blog" beginning, and it's clear that they are here to help you out.

You and I always got along fine, Colonel, when you were hanging out on the other blog, and as I said then, I didn't agree with your views, but I had respect for you.

Now that you're running for Governor, you seem to have lost the ability to answer a straight question, and I'm sad to see that.

But I will ask again. Please give your straight up, no dodges answer about whether a woman should have the right to choose abortion or not.

All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing
-Edmund Burke

Ms Brunette

They as you put it are here becasue they want to be here.

I don't need any help.

I have explained this to you the best I can as a candidate for office. My personal views on this and other topics are my personal views and just becasue I am running for office doesn't require me to let anyone into my thoughts and inner beliefs. I have stated my official position.

I have always respected you and enjoy our bantering back and forth so keep trying you may wear me down.

Brunette's picture

Colonel, what's the point of dodging?

This is a major issue. I didn't ask you whether you would choose to have an abortion if you were a woman or what you would advise a friend. I asked what your opinion of the law is and what it should be. Yet you dodge, and not very well, at that.

The governor has a great deal of ability to influence the direction his/her state takes.

I don't understand your reluctance to confront the question directly, and I think it's disrespectful of you to dodge, as you have been doing repeatedly.

Cheap shot and untrue. True

Cheap shot and untrue. True that I just signed up this afternoon, not true that my opinions have been out there for a looooong time (mydailyrecord.com/opinions/eric benson). I've know Denny for a long time and we disagree often bt that does not blind me to integrity and public service. I am here to participate in an open forum regarding the direction of our state.

Let's focus on the responsibilities and AUTHORITY of the governor of North Carolina.

Where in the Constitution of the United States or the Sate of North Carolina does it say anything about government interference in personal medical/family/sexual decisions?

I would love to discuss this and related topics at length but lets not let it get in the way of a gubernatorial discussion.

It looks like our hour is about up

Colonel, please feel free to stay and chat. Thank you for joining us.

Robin Hayes lied. Nobody died, but thousands of folks lost their jobs.

Yes, thanks Colonel Nielsen

You're a good sport and I appreciate you taking time to share your thoughts and answer our questions.

Thank you to all

I enjoy a spirited conversation and thank all of you for your questions. It is clear we don't all think alike. The problems comes when any one particuliar issue overrides all others, we then vote for a person based on that one issue.

Thanks again

Brunette's picture

A problem with politicians

is dodging a straight question.

The ability of a woman to determine whether or not to have an abortion -- safely and legally -- is extremely significant. It isn't a side issue. We're talking about half the population and we're talking about individual autonomy and we're talking about the kind of society we live in.

I could have moved on to other issues were you not so determined to dodge and twist, make cute and coy, and ultimately show such disrespect for an honest question.

Your decision to duck and roll was what kept the question coming back again and again.

Betsy

Thank you for having me.

Brunette's picture

Very disappointed in the dodging

I thought better of you, Colonel. I really did.

Ms Brunette

I still love you as much as I always did

personal tax on cars

Will you be able to help us get rid of this personal property tax on cars? We pay tax over and over for our cars here.

Work

Most the people in NC don,t want to work. They would rather lay back and let me work because of my ethics and the way I grew up. Can you, or will you fix this. I get behind folks in Foodlion every week that pay for groceries with food stamps and go put them in a Lexus or other nice car. Where are the priorities ? You seem like a pretty fair candidate to me. The only problem is you, like some others are what the people need, but we got spoiled ROTTEN kids who never worked, never said yea sir, yes mam or have any manners at all that want to be somebody and the parents are the blame.

momoaizo's picture

Sorry I missed this

it still baffles me why you are running as a Democrat. I'm conservative when it comes to balanced budgets and spending responsibly but you are very right of middle. That's an R! I agree that eventually we need to think beyond the D's and R's but we still need this country pulled more to the left.

(I'm betting that drlefty and safetini will not be posting here often, probably only when the good Col. needs them again.)
