Mathew Gross - Web Maven to John Edwards

In today's Greensboro News-Record is a nice profile of Mathew Gross, the internet guru for the John Edwards' campaign. Those of us who are refugees from Howard Dean's roller coaster quest of 2004 remember Mathew's efforts fondly. For many of us, if not most, our first substantial contact with the Howard Dean campaign came through the now legendary web presence that Mathew invented.
Back before Gov. Dean announced his high octane opposition to the war, and his intention to evict the "current occupant" from 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, Mathew was a riverboat guide in Moab, Utah. Equal parts outrage and irrational idealism caused him to drive 2,300 miles non-stop to the front door of Dean's campaign headquarters in Burlington, Vermont.
Mathew's intention was to become the Dean campaign web maven, a function that no one working on the campaign seemed to know they needed, and for which his one meaningful credential was writing for the popular blog MyDD.com.
The one thing that prevented campaign security from evicting his unannounced presence from Burlington headquarters was calling out desperately, and at the very top of his lungs, "I write for MyDD!!!" Joe Trippi, the campaign manager and a fan of MyDD, heard his plea and called back, "You're hired!!!"
To this very day this is the one recorded instance of anyone ever receiving preferential treatment because of a left wing blog addiction.
For those, like me, who drank Dr. Dean's Kool-Aid the rest was a story of high hopes, boundless enthusiasm and ultimately a terrible crash landing. However, during that brief exhilarating arc of success, Mathew Gross' marvelous web invention had me, and millions like me, acting together for a common cause. Here in North Carolina we attended Meetups together, petitioned for access to the ballot together, and we flocked to South Carolina packed five in a car to knock on doors together.
For reasons I do not know (perhaps that lovely woman in the picture is the reason?) Mathew Gross now lives in Greensboro. Not exactly next door to John Edwards' campaign headquarters, but it's close enough - as if geography really matters anymore. And now he's an official part of the progressive population of North Carolina with a blog of his very own called "Deride and Conquer." As you might guess, his blog is liberal and politically inclined, but not as "NC-centric" as our own BlueNC.com.
Anyway, all the best to our Greensboro neighbor. May he have all the success that might have been his once upon a time in Vermont - a place that now seems so very far away and a million years ago.

It explains alot
The Edwards campaign is light years ahead of the others in terms of web presence and netroots activism. No wonder - there's a net-rooter behind it. I never did drink the Dean kool-aid, as you say, George, but I really admired how that campaign mobilized and inspired. I see the same thing beginning with Edwards now. The next 6 months or so will be very interesting.

keep in mind...
that Matt Gross has been on board for...well, I don't know for sure but I tend to think it has only been a few months (6 at the outside). All that other stuff?
From what I have heard there is a really good tech guy who works/worked for One America Committee, but the driving force behind new technology was OFTEN...Elizabeth Edwards.
Podcasting was the example I heard, that Mrs. Edwards called up this guy and said "Hey, what is this podcasting stuff?" and within two weeks they had their first podcast up. I don't think that anyone truly appreciates how "in" to the net Mrs. Edwards really is.
Thanks George
It all does seem a million years ago -- but I really enjoyed reading your recollections of that distant (and heady) time.
Robert P. mentions in a comment above (and rightfully so) that the credit for the pioneering done by the Edwards' web presence in the last two years (podcasts, webisodes, etc.) should go to Elizabeth Edwards and the existing web team. I'm a very recent arrival to the scene.
As for why Greensboro? My wife (pictured above) is from here (we met as undergraduates in Chapel Hill) and when the Dean campaign came to an end in the middle of a particularly frigid Burlington winter, we wanted to move someplace warm, and so we came here.
Matthew, thanks for stopping by.
Any insights into what will be next? What will YOUR mark be on the campaign?
Also, is George Stern the young "Matthew Gross" of the Edwards campaign in that he seems to be the man behind the One Corps online presence?
Nice post, George
You may have already seen this, being a former Deaniac, but if not, this video has quite a lot of Mathew talking about the Dean campaign and the blog age: Blogumentary
maven
once again I found myself questioning the etymology of a word, this time maven. I found something kind of funny.
I think that describes the traditional media's take on us pretty well. Freak.
The M$M defines any alternative to their product negatively
Why would the M$M want to give up any ownership of the info, thus risk their profit margin?
Of course they've defined any alternative media as freaky or nutty. Anything to discredit and disempower the people.
Super Freak.
Super Freaky, yow.

LOL!
Embrace it. Thank God we don't have too be bland, mainstream, booooring conformists. PHEW!
Progressives have more fun!
another good one George
Robert, I think the MSM is just realizing that the "netroots" are not the "Nutroots". People like you and George, Anglico, Southern Dem and all the other great writers here at our BlueNC are part of the reasons for that recognition.
