Mr. Speaker
Dear Speaker Hackney.
It's been a while since I last wrote to you - back before you were elected Speaker. From all I can see, you are doing an admirable job for the most part, navigating the swirling waters of North Carolina state politics with grace and honor. As well you should. You set the bar high in your opening speech as Speaker, when you said:
I come here today with the greatest respect for this North Carolina House of Representatives, and the people who come here to serve in it:
There is no place in this State where public servants are more in tune with the citizens of North Carolina, than in this chamber.
There is no place in this State where the issues of government and politics are better or more fully debated, than in this chamber.
There is no place in this State where the interests of the less fortunate of our citizens are better represented, than in this chamber.
But there are storms on the horizon that will put your leadership to the test. Indeed, the winds are already picking up and the skies are darkening fast. In particular, three important issues are looming, threatening the very principles you outlined in your gracious remarks.
Mental health parity. The interests of the "less fortunate" are not being met by the House you lead. Rather, the interests of insurance companies are front-and-center. You have the power to redirect this sad turn of events to deliver on the vision you talked about. Please do that.
Ethics. You held fire during the Jim Black debacle and did not succumb to pressure to speak out against his corruption, which you surely recognized. In retrospect that restraint may have led to your election as Speaker. But you are not just another legislator now, and Thomas Wright is an embarrassment to the body you lead. If you think he should resign, let's hear it. If you don't, please explain why not. There comes a time when an elected official no longer has the credibility required to perform. That time has long-since passed for Thomas Wright. Use the power of your bully pulpit to take a stand for honor and integrity. I'm not asking you to clean house, I'm just asking you to open the door.
The Constitution. There is a move afoot to amend the NC Constitution so that it discriminates against citizens according to their sexualpreferencesorientation. You have the power to stop that from happening. If you don't, your legacy will be defined by that inaction. You will become the Speaker who allowed the Theocrats to run roughshod over freedom and liberty for all.
You said it well in your opening remarks:
There is no place in this State where the interests of the less fortunate of our citizens are better represented, than in this chamber.
We are counting on you to ensure that statement is true - and right now, it doesn't look all that promising.
Thanks for all you do.

Nicely said Mr. Protzman.
Hackney has made a firm statement
This is what Hackney said (yesterday I believe): "Unless Representative Wright has some satisfactory explanation, which certainly didn't happen today, then he certainly can no longer be effective here."
Now if it was a guy down at the bar saying "If he don't have something to say for himself, he will no longer be effective" it would just be an opinion. When it's the Speaker of the House, it goes beyond mere commentary.
There's something to be said for shooting from the hip, and there is also something to be said for being disciplined and thoughtful. President Bush shoots from the hip . . .
With regard to sexual orientation (orientation, not preference), I believe the GOP would pay us to encourage a public discussion on this. They would probably like to see it a little closer to election time, but still they would love this.
If I may paraphrase Machiavelli: when we strike at homophobia we must slay it. Can we kill inequality right now in NC? Or by attacking it do we only make it stronger?

Okay
My Googly buttons must not be working. I missed Joe's comments about Wright. They're pretty strong. Check that one off.
I don't buy your Machiavellian analysis. If the General Assembly approves a Constitutional amendment discriminating against gays and it goes to a vote by the people of North Carolina, it will pass. You forget we live in a state where countless young men died only 150 years ago trying to preserve slavery.
This issue should be buried by the Speaker. Now.
Will it come up again? Of course it will. The Theocrats will not stop until they impose their twisted view of Christianity on everyone around them.
Tolerance ends
of course it would depend on the wording but . . .
I'm sorry, I don't have enough faith to believe that the majority of North Carolina would vote to legally protect their gay neighbors, siblings, and children. I bet if you asked them "Do you think homosexually is wrong?" you would get a narrow majority saying "no," but try canvassing for the Human Rights Campaign in suburban Mecklenburg.
That being said, if you asked people under the age of 30, and I think you would see a profound shift in opinion. So either we need to make 20 somethings vote in the numbers that people in their sixties do, or we've got to find a way reach the hearts of older generations. Either way, it's a lot of work to do and the work is on the ground.

it's the main thing I like about WUNC these days.

do tell
As an NPR junkie, I'd like to hear your thoughts on WUNC. I'm taking "main thing" + "these days" to mean that there are some things you feel WUNC could be doing a better job on.

I'll pass
I've written about WUNC a lot . . . and mostly I think they're improving.

We've both fallen off the WUNC wagon.
Under Republican leadership they quit being investigative and took on the point/counterpoint/no analysis type of reporting. I don't know if they are getting better or not, they lost me.

No constitutional amendments.
We never heard anything else about that rule change that would have made it impossible to bottle-up constitutional amendments. So, I will assume that all such amendments, including those which have been waiting patiently for years, will be kept in committee.

What have YOU done today to make the world a better place?
Fighting Makes Them Stronger?
I don't get this idea, Jerimee. When we're fighting a battle in which we're behind, to stop fighting would seem to put us further behind. It could be that you're saying we ought to fight this battle by going door-to-door instead of trying to do something legislatively?
Either way - I think the best way forward is to follow Washington's lead in proposing a bill that would make it illegal for couples without children to remain married and to make divorce illegal. To take the pieces that the anti-gay/pro-het-marriage cite as examples of why gay folks shouldn't marry and couple them with the weaknesses in the institution of marriage itself. The bill, of course, wouldn't stand a chance of passage, and it would bring the entire issue up in a different light.
Noted Democratic blogger?
Heh.
I would have chosen "progressive" or "liberal" or "hot-headed" instead of "Democratic" since I don't see eye-to-eye with all that many North Carolina Dems.
