My Humble Solution to the HRC Problem
As I was out and about this week, I chanced upon the post-NC primary episode of the Diane Rheams show. Her 3 guests were all in agreement that Hillary Clinton needed to get out of the way, but, that like a guest that just doesn't want to leave when you are yawning at the door, this might be a problem. Being Beltway operatives, they were all talking about ways to allow her to save face in a carrot-and-stick kind of way. These folks think she should be offered the Vice president's slot, or have her campaign debts paid off. Neither of these are very good - Hillary is not going to settle for second place, no matter how powerful Darth Cheney has made it, and with the really BIG, important election coming up, Democrats need all the money they can use for all the congressional, senate, and presidential races. Based on some of the blogs I've been reading lately, quite a few in the general public are beyond the niceties of negotiating and just want her out. NOW.
I have to give credit to my beloved for coming up with what I feel is a perfect solution - Give her the next open slot on the Supreme Court.
Consider:
1) Supreme Court Justice is a powerful enough position to assuage the loss of the presidency.
2) The Court is so out of balance right now that we really need a hard left shift to even it out.
3) Poor Bader-Ginsburg needs another woman to speak for half of the country.
4) All the corporate media and pundits would be so busy frothing at the mouth over her that Obama could actually get the important business of running the country done.
and most importantly
5) It would be so much fun to see Fat Tony, Clarence, Roberts, and Scalito blow their respective gaskets. It might even be good for them to be challenged and have to think about the issues, rather than rubber-stamping every leftover Bush whim.
Note from my Beloved: When I first made this observation over a year ago, Senator Clinton was not running for the Republican nomination, as she is now, so, the idea of appointing Clinton to the Supreme Court might horrify some people. Because she has some of the stupidest political advisers fistfuls of money can buy, she has been running a hard right campaign because they told her that's how she wins. As a Supreme Court Justice is not a job you have to run for, and once you're in, death is about the only thing that will dislodge you, she could happily return to the more liberal and sensible Hillary of the early 90's.
Just the idea of his would give Pat Robertson an aneurysm, and it doesn't get better than that.

I love this idea.
I think.
Great last sentence.
Very interesting idea.
I'm not familiar with judges - and I realize that you don't have to be a judge to be appointed to the Supreme Ct. - but Hillary has never served as one. I like her tenacity and willingness to fight for whatever she's fighting for at a particular time.
It certainly would be an interesting confirmation process.

Interesting, indeed
Yeah, that would be interesting indeed. I do like the idea of seeing the republicans get all red in the face over it.
My inclination is that Obama wouldn't put her name forth. Assuming he tries to govern as a uniter, he would probably recognize that suggesting her to such an office would be enormously divisive.
Somewhere, I read a suggestion that Hillary instead put her energy into her role in the Senate, with the idea that she could easily become an incredibly powerful member of it. Essentially, she should recognize that her experience and knowledge of when to use sharp elbows and when to be diplomatic could be used to effect great change from there. Since I've been displeased recently with the lack of a backbone in Harry Reid, I could definitely get behind the idea of Clinton as Senate Majority Leader.
I've thought for a while that it stinks, in a way, that we have two historic and fantastic candidates in the same year, guaranteeing that one has to lose. I remind myself that it's great to have such an embarrassment of riches, but it can be problematic at times.
I think she could make an incredible, indelible mark
as Senate Majority Leader. Imagine the historical landmarks, then - We'll have the first African American President, the first female speaker of the house, and the first female senate majority leader.
And then we could get some work done.

We could have a
We could have a three-fer-one. Obama president, Hillary Senate Majority Leader, Edwards Attorney General. And give the next supreme court appointment to Biden. And Al Gore for EPA. Or Al for Veep. Heck, I still want Al for prez. But I agree that Hillary would be an incredible majority leader, just because of the tenacity factor. Harry is a wimp. But we gotta get Obama elected...

Michael and George?
According to this speech by President Gore, I thought that he would want Michael Moore and George Clooney on the Supreme Court?
Why?
People keep suggesting this--Clinton as Majority Leader--but I wonder why...
Clinton had very little political capital with her colleagues anyway and her lack of grace, when Obama's nomination is a virtual certainty, won't help endear her to members of the Senate any further.

Clinton's future
I think that part of why Clinton had little political capital is that it was so clear that she was biding time until her presidential run. The stances that she took were all obviously careful calculations to further a presidential run. (I'm not a close follower of senate politics and such, so please correct me where I'm wrong.)
She probably won't make a firm commitment to being a real leader in the senate - I think it's obvious that she really wants to be president - so this is a moot point. If she were to commit, however, I think that she could be a good majority leader. Putting her talents and abilities to ass-kicking efforts in the senate could be a fantastic thing.
You're right, though, that her "lack of grace" is doing nothing but harming her long-term reputation. It's part of why she'd also be an especially bad leader in the senate.
It would be nice to find a way for her to "save face". It's not really possible, though. She wants to be president. She can't. Anything else is obviously half a loaf.
Sigh. Personal ambition and a never-say-die attitude can be a good thing, but they can also be so harmful.
ps
I should also point out that this is a really creative idea - thank you!
Perfect idea.
I would actually LOVE seeing her on the Court on her own merits, regardless of the other stuff. She is smart and thoughtful and god and the devil both know that woman has really seriously paid her dues with all the crap she's had to put up with from the blathering idiots on Fox and at Regnery, etc., etc., etc.
All the other reasons and benefits you listed would be like a wonderful overload of chocolate shavings, walnuts and cherries on top. [I missed lunch today.]
