NC-02 GOP Candidate owes IRS $220,000

SMITHFIELD, N.C. -- A Republican congressional candidate who has advocated elimination of the federal income tax owes the federal government more than $220,000 in unpaid taxes, according to liens filed in Johnston County.

Danny Mansell is trying to unseat Rep. Bob Ethridge. He blamed the years-old tax problems on a time when he neglected to manage his business while his mother was dying and his wife battled cancer.

Mansell called the tax liens a "non-issue."

"That's between the IRS and myself, and we have worked out a settlement," Mansell said.

Mansell's business, The Demco Group, has also owed the state nearly $50,000 in taxes since 1999, according to Department of Revenue records. But Mansell said that lien record was already paid in full.

While he has pushed to replace the federal income tax with a nationwide sales tax, Mansell said his liens are not connected with his policy proposals.

"I've advocated that the tax system is unfair for the small businessman in this country for a long time," he said.

Ethridge's campaign had no comment on Mansell's tax history.

This is the best the GOP has to offer in the 2nd District?

Good catch, Todd.

I'm afraid this is about all you can expect from the Party of Torture, Greed and Perversion. This particular stunt falls into the greed category. The only surprise is that Mansell blamed his woes on his dying mama instead of alcoholism like Foley and Bob Ney did.

What a bunch of clowns.

Etheridge Story in Today's N&O

www.newsobserver.com/114/story/499406.html

Bob Etheridge doesn't have much of a challenger this year, which is good because he does a good job for his mainly rural district. I am not sure a more Progressive Democrat could win NC-02.

Well-financed Etheridge will be difficult to unseat

District designed to tilt Democratic Election 2006

Lynn Bonner, Staff Writer
Every two years Republicans take a run at defeating U.S. Rep. Bob Etheridge, a Democrat whose district is made up mostly of rural and suburban counties surrounding Wake County.

They've lost every time to the folksy politician who plays up his tobacco ties, is known for traveling the district every chance he gets -- talking to the elderly about prescription drugs or to schoolchildren about being a congressman -- and has much more campaign money to spend.

This is just amazing to me - Mansell isn't smart enough to lie about CAFTA like Hayes and Taylor do:

TRADE: Mansell criticizes Etheridge for not voting for the Central America Free Trade Agreement, which pork producers wanted. Most House Democrats opposed CAFTA. Etheridge said he voted against the agreement because it won't help the poorest Central Americans, or improve education in those countries.

And Helms begat Reagan...

Arguably, Ronald Reagan's Helms enabled win in the 1976 NC primary was all the encouragement he needed to try again in 1980, setting the stage for the Reagan Revolution and synergistic escapades like this one...

TrueMeckDem on Myers Park Pat

"My opinion of Pat has changed over the years. I used to think he was truly a man of the people but the longer he has been mayor, the less I think of him.

As with most cities, Charlotte has three political parties: Dem, Rep, and Chamber of Commerce. Pat is definitely the puppet of the COC here. What is good for business is good for Charlotte and Pat ... very personable guy, he has gotten a bunch of Dems in these parts to vote for him but I don't trust him."
