NC-03 Primary Problems: Adame, Weber File for May Contest
Cross-posted from Bloviations.
Raleigh's News and Observer reported today that Marshall Adame and Craig Weber have filed for the May 6th Democratic Primary.
I'm not sure why Weber filed: He's got no money, he hasn't updated his website since 2006, and, from what I've heard, he did everything he could to destroy any relationships or support he had (to include mine, and no, I'm not bitter).
I do not know Weber's true motivations, but I'm afraid that he's more interested in retribution to the Party (and North Carolina's 3rd Congressional District) than he is in defeating either Republican candidate or moving Eastern NC into a period of progressive politics.
Disclosure:
I support Marshall Adame for our 3rd District. He's a retired Marine veteran. He's combat tested, in and out of uniform. He's got a real stake in the occupation of Iraq and real experience of the failures there. He's seen the damage a private military can do to a national image.
Marshall Adame is the most viable Democratic candidate for Congress in our 3rd District.

Marshall needs to raise some money to get his name out there
However, if Weber has not been campaigning he's probably lost any name recognition advantage he might have had after running in 2006.
Robin Hayes lied. Nobody died, but thousands of folks lost their jobs.
I agree Betsy, kind of...
Marshall needs to raise some money. He really needs to sit down for 3 hours a day at a telephone and call folks asking for money.
Weber hasn't lost any name recognition. Everyone that had contact with him remembers him. None of them remember anything positive about him, though.

What have YOU done today to elect a Democrat?
Weber
This is all I can think of.
I asked my sources in Pitt County about this.
Several influential members of the Democratic party will fund Weber race with enough money to get him through the primary, which they hope Weber will win. The reason why is with what happened yesterday in Maryland with a GOP rep and what almost happend in 2004 to Arlen Specter, rep. Jones will have a fight on his hands to win the GOP primary. That district is only 35% registered Republican and while Jones is very popular with the districts conservative Democrats they can not help him in a primary. They feel like if Weber is the nominee and Jones loses the primary they will be able to convince Weber to drop out of the race and allow a Democratic heavyweight to enter the race, names include Pitt County Sheriff Mac Manning, former County Comminsioner John Minges, or Craven County DA Scott Thomas or Beaufort DA Seth Edwards, I heard some more names but I am not sure who there target is at this time. That is why I am told Weber is in the race and where his funding is coming from.
Oh...so the Dem Party establishment in the 3rd just realized
they can't buy out or control Marshall Adame, so they are putting up a puppet? Is that what you're saying?
Robin Hayes lied. Nobody died, but thousands of folks lost their jobs.
What funding?
Weber has no money. You're telling me that between now and May tons-o-cash is going to flow to him?
I'll believe it when I see it.
Secondly...Is that theory even possible? If there's no other names on the Democratic ticket after March 1, regardless of who wins/loses the Democratic Primary, how can some other new name be added? Can somebody with some knowledge educate me?

They can be added by petition.
We went through that last year in the race for the state House (NC52).
It's a back-asswards way to get on the ballot.

That's one way of looking at it, lcloud
Dishonest is another.
To think that the "Establishment" would interfere so much after I was assured yesterday that it wouldn't is quite disappointing though.
Just another of several reasons why I'm thinking of resigning my 3rd Chair and registering as an independent.

Thomas
I can't tell you the number of times I've wanted to do the same thing. But I haven't. Do you know why?
Because then the bastards win.
The Democratic party is the party of the people. Not just the good old boys, not just the movers and shakers. It's the party of the single parents struggling to make ends meet. It's the party of the faithful; it's the party of the atheist, who stand side by side and say "we want the best for everyone." It's the party of the freaks with purple hair; it's the party of the soccer mom who cares about what the world will be like in 100 years. It's the party of the gays, the lesbians, the bisexuals, and the transgendered who yearn for the same civil rights that all other Americans share. It's the party of the poor; it's the party of the comfortable right now,and it's even the party of the rich with a conscience. It's OUR party. Remain strong.
Stay and fight the good fight. Don't let the bastards win.
Be the change you wish to see in the world. --Gandhi
Here is how it works in theory
After the primary Weber resigns from the nomination and the party picks a heavywieght to replace him. They only need to fund Weber through the primary, becasue if Jones wins they are not going to pick a fight with young Jones and if Jones loses then Weber is stepping down.
Assuming Marshall Adame doesn't kick Weber's ass
in the primary.
Change is coming - no one can stop it.
Be the change you wish to see in the world. --Gandhi
After Weber's antics over the last 18 months, there's no chance
of his success over Adame.
Out of all the Party leaders in the 3rd District that I've talked to, none would support, especially publicly, Weber.

What have YOU done today to elect a Democrat?
Why not just put the "heavy weight" up front
Why does 3rd district need to hide their true choice? If the guy cannot win a primary, why would he be good as the representative of 3rd after November?
Crap like that is what makes people puke when politics are brought up. Why you only get 10 - 20% of 18+ voting because it really does not matter. The old fart cronies will put who they want in their after the people have done their civic duty and gone home. Then these "party" leaders determine who should really be representing folks? I call bull shit on that plan.
Weber is just a place holder? What is this heavy weight doing now that he cannot get out their on the trail and show people what he is? If the sheriff wants to be a Congressman, than he should throw his name in the hat. If he wants to be sheriff, than do that. But do not try to do both or have someone place hold for you. That is just disgusting. BOSS HOG comes to mind, with his stupid white suit.
I understand that once a party owns a seat that party gets to fill if when vacated due death, resign, etc. But if Weber is planning on NOT representing then why the charades? If the guy dies, or is found mentally or physically unable to perform the duties for the position he ran for during the primaries, then yes, replace him.
If the guy the party puts up ends up going to jail or quits, I hope the party has some integrity and fights again in 2, 4 or 6 years. We had our guy and he is now out of the race. We did not do our homework at the start.
When Foley quit because of his stupidity, people were not happy that his name was still on the ballet, and if enough people voted for him, that the GOP would get to replace him. His name should have been removed.
We are voting for the person, not the party. Based on this logic, why go through a primary, why not just let the old cronies tell us who our nominee is.

Damn right, Parmea.
Your post made me think of The Who's song "Don't Get Fooled Again".
"meet the new boss, same as the old boss"
We've got to put an end to these kind of politics, whether they're true, or whether they're just rumors. I've got to wonder if this wasn't planted by Republicans who are shaking in their boots because Marshall Adame is an awesome candidate who will whip Weber in the primary and Jones in the general. God, I wish everyone could have heard his speech at the SEC meeting. Awesome.

I have been sick so I have not been able to answer this
Also I have not lived in Pitt County in nine years and the Democratic party is still somewhat of a machine which I am no longer a part of, but my guess is the reson why no one will run now is because they have no beef with Walter Jones Jr. They have no intention of picking a fight with him, right now the repulicans are doing that, my guess is if he is re-elected on in January 2009 many of those Democrat will once again attempt to coax young Jones back to the Democrats and they do not wish to antaganize him, but as for what I hear Jones is going to have a difficult time getting out of this primary and should he not then they wish to put a candidate they feel can be that guy guy from Jacksonville whose name escapes me.
But, Uh, THE MODERATE, Someone IS Running.
His name is Marshall Adame.
Maybe you've heard of him.

What have YOU done today to elect a Democrat?
I have heard of him
From the begining all I have said is I have checked with my Friends back in Pitt County about why Weber is running, and I shared what I was told.
To repeat I do not live in the district anymore nor do I have a politcal presnece in the district though I once did. However this is what I have been told, if Jones is the Gop pick then the Democratic nominee is little more than a sacrificail lamb, be it Adame, Weber, or anyone else. But if Jones is not the nominee then everything changes, my guess is Mr Adame has told these folks he will not step aside if Jones loses and I guess Weber has, although once again this is second hand info. However I with to show you something.

I sure you have heard of this man, hsi family has been Democratic stalwarts for over fifty years. He is also somone I once knew real well being his father lived next door to my partents when I was in high school I used to mow his fathers lawn.
Look at who he gave money to this ougth to tell you something about that race.
It doesn't matter who he gave money to!
Why should he be exempt from the vetting process of the primary? Democrats from the 3rd district should not stand for this kind of 19th century garbage.
Be the change you wish to see in the world. --Gandhi
If he wants to run he has already been vetted
He is a former three term State Senator, but I am not sure he is running he is just part of the Democratic machine of the area, as for what you want, mot if not all of the elected Democtrats of Pitt County owe an alliagence to the machine, few if any consider the net roots that valueable, if you wish to go down there and change it knock you self out, I have better things to do with my time.
Sweetie - I ain't talking about "the machine"
I'm talking about rules. If the folks in NC-03 are fine with Boss Hogg, hey, more power to them. But if they're not, they ought to look into Marshall Adame.
Be the change you wish to see in the world. --Gandhi
So, you're suggesting that...
Instead of supporting the guy with the testicles to stand up against Ol' Walter B. Jones, Jr. from the beginning the Democratic big-wigs in the
3rd DistrictGreenville would instead bide their time until May to maybe support someone that the rest of the district hasn't heard of?That's a recipe for failure right there, my friend. Of course, it is pretty typical of the Democratic Party these days...

on the face of it it sounds like some folks have their tin foil hats on here. But maybe I'm naive.
I'll look into it.

Senator Mansfield once told Senator Biden
That you can question somebody's judgment, but not their motives. That seems like good advice here. Very rarely do you know why a person runs for office.
1 Thessalonians 5:21: But examine everything carefully; hold fast to that which is good.
