NC-11: Taylor FINALLY agrees to debate!

Cross-posted from NC House Races
=======================

Wow. I guess even corrupt wingunts like Charles Taylor can see the writing on the wall, because he's finally agreed to debate Heath Shuler:

For the first time since the 1994 election, U.S. Rep. Charles Taylor has agreed to debate his opponent.

Taylor agreed Thursday to a televised debate — with conditions — against Democratic Challenger Heath Shuler. The challenger said he tentatively agreed to debate. The date and format will have to be worked out.

...

Sabo [UNC-Asheville political science professor] said a Reuters/Zogby poll released Wednesday, which showed Shuler with a 51 percent to 40 percent lead over Taylor, may have impacted the Taylor campaign’s decision to debate.

The survey of likely voters found 8 percent were undecided and 1 percent chose another candidate, but didn’t specify who. The nonpartisan poll had a margin of error of 4.5 percent.

Gee, you think?

Boy, I can't wait for voters in the 11th District to hear the difference between these candidates. This gives Shuler a real chance to put the last nail in Taylor's coffin. Stay tuned for the date and time!

My money's on it not happening.

They're still "negotiating", but my guess is that Taylor's demands will be extremely stringent, and if the end result doesn't tilt the balance in his favor, he'll refuse to do it.

If it does happen, Taylor will get pwn3d. Pure and simple.

This might be the most visually stunning debate

in terms of differences. But, I hope Mr. Shuler practices those talking points until they flow like Zip Right 33 Cross on Quick.

Zip Right 33 Cross on Quick

I'm not sure what this means, but I think I'm going to agree with you.

Personally, I'm more looking forward to watching Charlie's pancake makeup melting off of his face underneath the lights. :)

As I look at it, it's really not feasible.

It's a football play, but you can't have a zip (motion) and a snap count of quick (first sound). Some football plays are about ten words long and my point is that if Heath could memorize the thousands of options offered by the Redskins offense, then he can memorize various talking point answers.

I generally am against talking points, but this race is an exception.

Aaaaahhhh!

If I were Heath

I wouldn't debate the scumbag for one second. Here's the talking point:

Charles Taylor has had X years to define and defend his record. And he has failed miserably. The people of this district are already making up their minds that they've had enough of Mr. Taylor.

Now that he's behind the the polls, he's suddenly eager for a debate. He's suddenly eager to spin more tales for the people of North Carolina. Well, it's too late for that. Charles Taylor had his chance and didn't come through.

Heath has the upper hand. Whatever conditions Taylor wants to impose should be rejected.

$10 It doesn't happen

The candidates' requirements are so divergent that I think this debate will wind up on the scrap heap. Taylor wants no audience and to have the campaigns submit the bulk of the questions whereas Shuler wants an auditorium style public debate with public questions.

Taylor wouldn't do this, but he's more desperate every day. He hasn't debated since 1994 in a tight race with Maggie Lauterer.

Ideally, the debate would happen, so the voters could have an unfiltered look at both candidates. But politically, if I'm Shuler, I wouldn't go near it with a ten-foot pole.
