NC AFL-CIO Won't Endorse for Governor
As a participant last Thursday's candidate screening meetings held by the NC State AFL-CIO, I can confirm that the day was a marathon of 20 minute candidate grillings. At the end of the marathon, we were left with some tough choices on on our hands.
Both Beverly Perdue and Richard Moore are friends of labor. Who do you pick when you have such strong options either way? It puts any special interest in a bind because you don't want to pick the wrong horse and then have to repair a relationship with the winner.
In the end, I think that Richard's interview is what evened things up and made it clear that labor should not endorse either one. And I truly think that is the right course for the organization.
We have two candidates that are clearly better than any of the Republicans. Come fall, we're going to support whoever the nominee is to the hilt.
If Richard can close with some of the magic he showed on Thursday, Bev might have a real fight on her hands. And I think in the end that a strong fight is a good thing, much like our presidential primary.
(Note - I only discussed the gubernatorial endorsement because the story already ran over at the N&O. Labor did make several endorsements yesterday. Since I am not sure the status of those candidate notifications, I am not at liberty to discuss other endorsements.)
