New Canvassing Strategy
I highly reccomend that everyone take a look over at this diary on kos. The quick summary is that the Edwards campaign is sending DVDs to 70,000 Iowa houses. In the first campaign mailing of the 08 cycle, the Edwards campaign has put a 6 minute introductory video on his Health Care plan together and sent it to the most likely caucus attendees.
This is not a new idea, but it is on the cutting edge of campaign politics. The first time I had heard about this was actually Patty McHenry. Apparently he did something very similar in 2004, using dvds as a way to introduce himself. I think that might have involved portable DVD players and canvassers though. Details are murky.
Some people have expressed concerns about people looking at this DVD but there are some important details. It is the first mass mailing of this cycle, making it more likely people will read it. It contains a DVD, and who doesnt like interactive videos? Most important is the targetting. This wasnt sent out to people who arent going to be voting in the caucus.
Anyway, what the Edwards campaign is doing here is saying a few things.
#1 The media might not view him as a frontrunner, but he is going all out to win Iowa.
#2 His campaign is cutting edge. They are finding new ways to engage voters.
#3 They are saving money. Sending a DVD to 70,000 isnt cheap. But imagine the cost of buying TV time for 6 minutes.

Another Good Post Blue
These are good ideas, the media doesn't like it because they don't get a cut of that pie. I chuckle every time someone in the MSM tells me who our front-runner is....like they have a clue!
No matter that patriotism is too often the refuge of scoundrels. Dissent, rebellion, and all-around hell-raising remain the true duty of patriots.
Progressive Discussions
the simple fact
is that primaries are NOT won by money or by support in a national poll early on. let me repeat. MONEY WILL NOT WIN THE NOMINATION.
That goes for both parties. Primaries have turnout levels so low that runnning anything other than a grassroots campaign in the early states is absurd. Having people show up at a rally doesnt mean anything. Having a way to convince them and then having those convinced show up at the caucus or election booth is the only way to get a win.

I heard that about Pat, too.
The report I read said his campaign bought portable DVD players and tons of college kids went door-to-door from 9 a.m. 'til dark playing his introductory videos. Someone was quoted as saying "we never got turned away." They apparently knocked on the doors of people who'd never had a political canvasser stop by before.
With three contenders all spending upwards (or over) a million each, McHenry came in second initially. Then he won the 30,000-vote runoff by 85 votes.

the guy he beat
still has at least 1/4 million in campaign debt left over.

He put in $300 K of his own
Or maybe that's the debt. He was just a county sheriff. One guy who lost in the primary spent over twice as much of his own money (on his way to a $1 mil plus PRIMARY campaign.) Gotta love the conservative cannibalism.
And, as you are pointing out, it's just amazing what door-to-door and a DVD can do. (And what else, we can only speculate . . .

Clinton sent us a DVD in 2002
It was called "A Man from Hope" or something like that. We watched it and were impressed by it. So I don't think this technique is particularly innovative, but it is a good one.
So far the thing that has impressed me most with Edwards is his interview with Brian Lehrer that I listened to as a podcast. His explanation of his health plan is a marvel of clarity and good sense. Oh, I just found a video of the interview on YouTube. I never expected Lehrer to be dressed so well! (Interestingly I found it easier to understand the podcast, which I found less distracted.)
