No Child Left Behind - a hidden aspect
When Bush & Co said "No Child Left Behind", they meant it, but they weren't necessarily talking about reading, 'riting, and 'rithmetic. Did you know that unless you opt out, your teenager's information, including name, address, phone number, will be automatically sent to military recruiters?
This is a sneaky section of NCLB, with lots of legalese, making it very difficult for parents to opt-out. When we learned of this, we immediately did our research and found that we could opt out by writing letters to our school and school district. We used the templates found at Leave My Child Alone as a guide.
That was 2 years ago. Son is now 17, and a junior. He's a very bright young man, and has been getting lots of interest from many top quality schools. And wouldn't you know it, some military recruiters as well. It seems that the College Board/SAT people share the information with the military as well. That's because Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 give Military Recruiters the same access to students as institutions of higher learning. So now I've had to send letters not only to the school and school administration office, but also to the military recruiters offices close by, AND to the College Board.
If you have teenage children and didn't know about this, you need to look into it, talk to your school's officials and find out what their policy is. (I can tell you - they pass along the names. If they don't, they lose funding.) If you're uncomfortable with the answer you get, opt-out.

Good info. Thanks!
Good post
And if I'm not mistaken students themselves can demand to be taken off any lists given to the military.
This isnt new by no means, but hopefully with people like yourself Lcloud fighting for 2 years, more people will pay attention.
Our children need to know that some people fought back, when others collaborated.

It's my understanding that the individual must be 18 before they can request their own "opt out". Until then, their parents are responsible.
That is my understanding - it is entirely possible that I am wrong. It has happened. Occasionally.

Fortunate Son....
I ain't no senator's son,
It ain't me, it ain't me,
I ain't no fortunate one, no,
And because most Americans are not a "Senator's Son" and because this is an illegal invasion of a country through the promulgation of outright lies, I am AGAINST the draft.
Watching the news today, it looks like the Republicans are thoroughly against it too. The line from each and every one has been that there are enough troops in Iraq to "win the war" and we don't need no stinkin draft!
Which, btw, really bothers me...I agree with Republicans....ewwwwww
Ok, I understand what Rangel is saying, if there were a draft, then the lawmakers would hear from their constituents that now is the time to get out. Sorry, I just don't want to gamble with my son's life or that of any other of draft age.
No matter that patriotism is too often the refuge of scoundrels. Dissent, rebellion, and all-around hell-raising remain the true duty of patriots.
