Why won't Pat McCrory answer the question?
In case you missed it, Mayor Pat promised last week that a McCrory administration would not keep secrets from We the People. Which naturally caused me to ask: Why hasn't he fully disclosed his personal financial interests?
Over at the Dome, his campaign manager had this to say:
Mr. Protzman's ruse about McCrory "hiding his wealth" is getting tired. McCrory (and Perdue) filed statements with the Ethics Commission re: their financial status. These are public documents that outline sources of income, property and other assets. One look at these forms makes it obvious that Perdue is a millionaire (who has loaned her campaign at least $1M, but sources indicate as much as $2M). McCrory is not wealthy.
Gosh darn it. I feel like I'm talking to Mr. Moose Mom!
The truth is, I haven't hinted in any way that McCrory is involved in ethical scandals, unless you call supporting a coal-fired power plant that spews toxic mercury that poisons the environment an ethical lapse. In fact, I haven't accused McCrory of anything other than being secretive about his personal financial picture.
What I want to know - and it's a very simple question - is how much of Pat McCrory's personal wealth is tied to continued profitability of Duke Energy. I've asked a dozen times, and all the Campaign Manager can say in return is: I'm not answering that question, but did you know Bev Perdue is wealthy?
Yes, Mr. Moose Mom. I knew Bev Perdue is wealthy. Now will you please answer my damn question?

Why this matters
Like Sarah Palin, Pat McCrory is part of the problem when it comes to climate change. He's a member of the "Drill Baby Drill" crowd, who knows full well that drilling off the coast of NC will do nothing whatsoever to put a dent in America's energy dependence - even while it would further our reliance on fossil fuels that are quite literally destroying our planet.
McCrory knows Big Energy is a source of huge global problems, but he refuses to turn on his employer of 18 years and become a crusader for sanity. He's not stupid, he knows better. Which means something else is driving his agenda. I'm guessing it's greed.

Imagine how much it must be?
Seriously, if they are stonewalling this much, imagine how much it must be?
$10 Million? $20 Million?

I doubt it's that much
but I'm guessing that after 18 years on the Duke Energy Puppet String, he's pretty heavily invested in Duke's long-term success. But it's really not the amount of money, it's the principle of conflict of interest.
The Mayor said he had to check with the CEO of Duke Energy before he could make up his mind to run for governor. That's scary.

On the other hand.....
all state employees are more or less barred from running for state office. Because it is too much of a conflict of interest. Interesting, that.

Yeah, if it weren't a problem, they'd be able to answer/
I think it's a fair question to ask of someone who wants to be governor of our state. Do you or do you not have stock in Duke Energy? It's a simple question. Yes or no.

More than how much stock.
How much are you worth, how much of your net worth is due to the largess of Big Energy.
