How Obama inspired me to write my first post

For the past 4 years, I have been watching the political landscape for the Presidential campaign develop.

In my work, I also get to talk to a lot of politicos and hear their opinions. Usually, I'd rather discuss string theory or metaphysics than politics, but today I feel compelled to share my opinion on Barack Obama.

I have been a fan of Barack's and considered him in my top three choices. The others being John Edwards - (yes, I am friends with Wade Norris and that comes with the territory and I like the guy)and I also love Hillary Clinton (how could you not!) I plan to work with all my heart and soul to see that whoever gets the nomination becomes the next President, so for me, the choice was an easy one, until now.

As it stands, I feel compelled to speak out to Obama fans, his campaign and hopefully to Barack himself.

You have inspired me to write my first blog, but unfortunately you inspired me to write about how dissappointed I am with the stance that you have taken in regards to homosexuality. You see, as a proud gay black man, it was offensive to me and my friends in the GLBT community to hear about Rev. Mcclurkin being put on your official gospel tour.

I believe that I am created in God's image and that my homosexuality is part of who I am. It is not a choice or a sin that I need to be delivered from, nor am I, in any way, offensive to God. I AM That I AM and that's all there is to it. As a matter of fact,if you're opposed to overpopulation and abortion, did it ever occur to you that gays and lesbians might be mother natures last line of defense?

However Senator, your choice to embrace this singer seems to indicate that you agree with and support his point of view, and that's fine for a private citizen but not for anyone that wants to be the President for All Americans.

The GLBT community and the Human Rights Campaign spoke to you about this issue, it seems that you triangulated and weighed the gay supporters against the black supporters in the party. That sounds alot like the divide and conquer strategies of the republicans.

I was looking to you for change, for hope that one day I'll live in a country where my rights as a citizen are not curtailed by whom I choose to love.

If indeed you do get the nomination, my plan has not changed, I will carry your banner and speak your praises from one end of this state to the other and do everything I can to see that you are elected President of the United States,  because in the end all that matters is getting America back on track and moving forward. It's just, well ..... I just hoped .....that's all.

I'm not a gay black man

but I too was extremely disappointed by the Mcclurkin strategy of the Obama campaign. I was disappointed by the whole "Gospel Hour" part of the tour. I think it's a mistake, made by a candidate who could otherwise be one of my top contenders. In fact, it moved Obama from my number 2 choice to about number 4.

As for you, faren fleming, you are right - God made you who you are and didn't make a mistake. I don't consider myself Christian, but I am amazed at the arrogance of a human or group of humans who claim to know God's will. How sad that some feel they should marginalize you and so many others just to feel better about themselves, or even worse, just to get elected.

Welcome to BlueNC. Great first post. I front-paged it because of the issue it addresses, not because of the presidential politics. I also added the "teaser" to the post so that it reads as a whole if people come in the front door.

You did a great job.

Thank You

Thank you so much for your comments and for posting my letter. I know what you mean. As for me and religion I have a t-shirt that says it so well. In big letters on the top it says "Jesus Saves" undreneith "passes to Buddah .... Shoots ..... Scores!" The idea of assended beings I'm ok with because they would arise out of multiple and diverse cultures, creating different paths to the same understanding that all of us and everything is part of one whole. Thank you again for your warm welcome to BlueNC and I look forward to more great dialog. Your site and the people on it are amazing.

Sincerely,
Faren Fleming

Thanks for voicing your opinions.

Similar Feelings Here

I am also having similar feelings about the Obama campaign. I am glad I have not given them any money because if I did I might have a case of buyer’s remorse now. Not just about this McClurkin thing, but how the campaign has kind of been a dud in general. I read Obama’s book and he has failed to continue where it left off and he is losing me (so much I don’t think I want to give $50 for my wife and I to hear him speak on the 1st). I am not ready to support Hillary in the primary yet, but am starting to lean towards Edwards more and more.

Let me point you here.

Stan posted it yesterday. Perfectly described why I'm on the Edwards train.

I carry the promise of America in my heart, where my parents placed it. Like them, like you, I believe in people, hard work, and the sacred obligation of each generation to the next.
This is our time now. It falls to use to redeem our democracy, reclaim our government and relight the promise of America for our children.
Let us blaze a new path together, grounded in the values from which America was forged, still reaching toward the greatness of our ideals. We can do it. We can cast aside the bankrupt ways of Washington and replace them with the timeless values of the American people. We can liberate our government from the shackles of corporate money that bind it to corporate will, and restore the voices of our people to its halls.

This is the cause of my life. This is the cause of our time. Join me. Together, we cannot fail.
We will keep faith with those who have gone before us, strong and proud in the knowledge that we too rose up to guard the promise of America in our day, and that, because we did, America’s best days still lie ahead.

Obama's big mistake

I think Obama made a classic mistake in hosting a gospel hour in the south. I think that many people outside the south think we are a monolithic culture dominated by Southern Baptists and that we all are beholden to the church. True, the christian denominations still are huge but we are seeing more and more non christians in our areas.

I had the chance the table at the Piedmont Pagan Pride festival last month and our Jewish Community Center here in Charlotte hosted the last clergy breakfast.

We are becoming more and more diversified in our spirtual paths in the south and I for one find this wonderful. I belong to two congregations, an episcopal one and a uu one, each meets a need and I cherish the relationships that I am able to foster within each one.

Bigotry in the name of religion has a long history, not just in the south but since the beginning of organized religion and I find this troubling.

Who you love should NEVER be an issue, EVER!

word.

How beautiful to wake up to this.

Wonderful to have you here

Faren Fleming. Hope you'll hang around.

I'm white, female and a very solid Edwards supporter. I am Christian, (though if I sat down with local preachers and priests and described by spiritual beliefs in detail, they'd most certainly declare me NOT Christian) and I am gay. So are most of my dearest friends ... Christian and gay, that is. One of those things is by choice, the other is not. I really like Obama, and was really confused by the choice of entertainment he made and disappointed in his choice of how to handle the foot in mouth situation he found himself in. I admire his basic goal of trying to help each side understand the other more clearly, but I don't really need an explanation for being told I need a cure like a person with an addiction does.

That attitude always takes me aback when I hear it. When was the last time anyone heard Obama's love for Michelle or Bill's love for Hillary or John's love for Elizabeth referred to as an addiction?

As much as I admire the goal of bringing people together, (lord knows we need it), it seems to me that it will be really hard to take a strong stand and lead on tough economic, trade and constitutional issues when a man's primary goal in life is to get people to play nice together.

I know that was snarky. I just think there's a line, and trying to "understand" a bigot's bigotry and let him wear it proudly is OVER that line.

Hello Faren Fleming and thank you for your first post.

I feel, as you have well stated, that this was a very large mistake by Mr. Obama as a Presidential candidate, and as a person who has expressed in his past writings and speeches the viewpoint that "hope" is what is needed in this world.

This incident has not brought any hope to the discourse, but quite the opposite.

I'm getting tired of Democratic candidates running from LGBT

I know it's a wedge issue. I know that Republicans win elections when they scare the crap out of us and call it terrorism, when they mention the A-word, when they bring up "the homosexual lifestyle."

Civil rights, women's rights, the rights of the people of the world not to be bombed by us for the benefit of corporate oil and defense contractors.

Are these things so hard to stand up for? If the greatest promotional minds of the Democratic party can't figure out how to frame these issues for the swing voters, then we don't deserve to be in power.

News of the 10th district: See Pat Go Bye Bye,

You know, I just don't get why it's a wedge issue.

And why are "people" suddenly an issue? (I know you didn't make it that way, DQ, - riffing off your post.) I am so tired of people who think they are better than everyone else. You know what?

I think I'm better than them. Nyah.

When we start talking about people as "issues", we lose our humanity. I don't care which God you pray to, or if you do - but that takes you further away from the truth, from what is right.

Homo-immigranto-phobia wins votes for Republicans

That's why people are an issue. They can only win if they stir up homophobia, immigranto-phobia and scare the crap out of us. Otherwise, people vote Democratic.

Republicans don't care about the impact they are having on the daily life of homosexuals and Latinos. They don't care. They don't care that all the phony terrorism scares before elections probably causes great harm to children if not their parents. They don't care. They want to win and this is literally the only way they can. It's clear in the polls.

Americans vote Democratic unless they think they are about to be killed by a suicide-bombing homosexual Spanish-speaking immigrant.

Barack obama statement on Donnie McClurkin

Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama said Monday he is "disturbed" by some of gospel-singer Donnie McClurkin's views toward homosexuals, a day after the prominent Obama supporter lashed out at critics for calling him 'anti-gay.'

"It's true we had a controversy...a gospel singer was singing at a gospel concert on our behalf, he was one of many, and he had some views that were anti-gay," the Illinois Democrat said during an MTV/MySpace forum. "I am disturbed by those views and I have said publicly that I have disagreed with them."

Some of my very close relatives are gay and I completely agree that it was a mistake to include Donnie McClurkin in this gospel tour. However, I have been an Obama supporter and this one thing is not going to change my mind mainly because I know that Obama's views are completely opposite of those of Donnie McClurkin.
Mistakes get made in campaigns and plenty have been made by other Democratic candidates.
Welcome to the BlueNC community Faren Fleming.
