NRCC attacks me for telling the TRUTH

I'm told our campaign is doing well and that the proof is in the attacks coming from the National Republican Congressional Committee. I realize it is their job to try and build up their candidate, Republican Robin Hayes, by tearing me down, but this is ridiculous.

Candidate for NC-08 Will Say Anything to Get Elected

Washington- Larry Kissell, the re-run candidate for North Carolina's 8th Congressional District, can't make up his mind on whether he supports or opposes earmarks. His inconsistency on the issue shows he will do or say anything to get elected.

Earlier this year, Larry Kissell was complaining about earmarks, according to a local press report...

Actually I was complaining about President Bush's hypocrisy on earmarks, only discovering their potential for abuse and lack of transparency when his Party loses total power, and then only in his final State of the Union address.

From the Laurinburg Exchange:

"At times I thought I was watching a first-term president laying out his plans for his term," Kissell said after the speech. "Not a man who has been there for seven years."

Kissell said Bush and the Republicans had control of Congress and failed to move on the initiatives that Bush brought up Monday night.

"It is interesting that the president did not veto a single financial bill," he said. "Now all of a sudden he has discovered earmarks - a favorite thing of special interest. I wish he had discovered it sooner before we added on three trillion dollars in debt."

I'm sure we can all agree on that, but the NRCC accuses me of flip-flopping.

Then, last week, Larry Kissell decided it would better suit him to be on the other side of the issue. The Hill newspaper reported that Larry Kissell claims that he wants more earmarks:

My actual statement:

"North Carolina's 8th District is ranked by the Associated Press as one of the most economically devastated in the nation. If earmarks are still part of the system in January 2009, then yes, I would try to get the badly needed help set aside that our district needs. We are home to Ft. Bragg with a growing need for readiness and thousands of stretched-thin military families already in an economy still suffering from years of bad free trade deals. We need to get the rate of return up when it comes to what we send Washington versus the help we get back and given that our long term incumbent sits on the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, I'd think he'd do more than he has to help. Even freshman Democrat Heath Shuler brought back more to the mountains of North Carolina than Robin Hayes did to us last year. As for transparency, I think it's essential to see what your Representative is up to, and I'd never be ashamed to shout from the rooftops the real help working families need."

The NRCC continues too cute by half:

"Kissell Communications Director Steve Hudson said his candidate's position on earmarks has been consistent, adding that Kissell believes more resources need to be brought home to the district." (The Hill, March 13, 2008)

As a service to Larry Kissell and his staff, the National Republican Congressional Committee is going to conduct a quick vocabulary lesson on the word "CONSISTENT:"

con·sis·tent -- \kən-ˈsis-tənt\ -- adjective: free from variation or contradiction

"I can think of a lot of words to describe Larry Kissell's double talk on earmarks, but consistent sure wouldn't be one of them," NRCC spokeswoman Julie Shutley said.

My staff suggested we send the NRCC's vocabulary lesson to their own candidate, Robin Hayes:

"Every time I drive through Kannapolis and I see those empty plants I know there is no way I could vote for CAFTA," Hayes said. [AP 7/14/2005]

Hayes: "What does CAFTA sound like? NAFTA," he said. "It's not in the best interests of a core constituency I represent." Raleigh News and Observer, 7/14/2005]

"I am flat-out, completely, horizontally opposed to CAFTA," Hayes said. [Charlotte Observer, 7/25/2005]

"Congressman Hayes is extremely pleased to create a fair and level playing field, but it still does not change the fact that CAFTA is not a good deal for 8th District businesses," said Carolyn Hern, press secretary for Hayes." [Winston-Salem Journal, 7/21/2005]

Friends, perhaps the NRCC and Robin Hayes should look up another word: be·tray'al n.

Seriously folks, people believe these types of attacks if they go unanswered and they end up reprinted in the district with no context. The TRUTH is the earmarks process has been complicated with a lack of transparency resulting in "Bridges to Nowhere" and kick-backs to special interests, while the working families of a poor district like mine wait for real help.

Please help me set the record straight. Unfortunately, that takes money and you know how much I hate to ask for it. As someone who gets up every morning and goes to work as a classroom teacher I know how hard you work for your money and I promise you if you entrust my campaign with your support, we'll use it well to set these folks straight.

We all know that this type of politics is exactly what is wrong with Washington. Your support today can help me get to Washington and put some transparency back in government and take our Country back.

Please be generous.

Excellent push back, Larry

Consider it a badge of honor that the people who have driven this country off a cliff have decided that you threaten their stranglehold.

They are right. You do threaten their stranglehold. And Flipper Hayes can feel it in his bones.

This attack on you has "scared to death" written all over it.

Frontpaged.

I really enjoy your ability to put a situation into perspective

Larry.

I would feel sorry for Sir Robin of the Soon-To-Be-Unemployed, but I just don't have it in me anymore to actually try to have feelings for someone that does not care any more about his or her fellow human beings than the amount of money they might bring to his or her personal account.

Kick his butt, Larry. We will assist any way we can.

North Carolina. Turning the South Blue!

North Carolina. Turning the South Blue!

you've got a lot of nerve...

...thinking carefully about your position, then agreeing that you would follow the exisiting rules to help your constituents if that's what it takes.

you're probably the kind of candidate that wants government to spend the taxpayer's money wisely, too. it's just disgusting.

with candidates like you running around, how will the others "protect our phoney-baloney jobs up here"?

Kissell-Make up your Mind

Larry Kissell’s financial pitch here, disguised as a blog post, didn’t quite lay out all the facts, so I thought I would fill you in on the rest of them.

Besides calling earmarks “a favorite thing of special interest,” here are some other quotes from Larry Kissell on earmarks:

“Every time the Congressman brings back pork, it’s not money from Washington, its money from China or South Korea. What kind of leverage are we giving other countries with this huge debt?” (Stanly News and Press, 12/15/05)

“Our representative that calls himself a conservative should spend less time handing out checks this campaign season while running a tab for our children with the People's Republic of China, and more time balancing the deficit he helped create in our Republican-led "borrow and spend" Congress.” (Larry Kissell, National Security, Iraq, Energy, Economics and Veterans, Friday, January 13, 2006)

“From a surplus to record deficits in six short years and no end in sight! Helping average Americans bring home the bacon is one thing; spreading pork around like there's no tomorrow is another.” (Larry Kissell, Why Congress? Larry Explains His Decision)

These quotes from Larry Kissell are definitely not ringing endorsements of earmarks and even further show Kissell’s inconsistency on the issue. The point of the NRCC press release is a valid one: Larry Kissell can’t seem to make up his mind and will say anything to get elected.

Julie Shutley

Julie, fortunately we know Larry Kissell

We helped promote him last cycle when nobody else would listen. We've watched him defend himself against outrageous lies from Robin Hayes.

Robin Hayes is a liar in more ways than one. Robin Hayes lied - FLAT OUT LIED - to his constituents when he said he would vote against CAFTA. He sold them up the river.

Robin Hayes also used my copyrighted photograph without my permission - I have the paper to prove I own the copyright - in not one but two promotional campaign mailers and refused to pay me for the use of the photograph. I have the letter from his lawyer to prove that as well as other documentation.

So......you can twist what Larry said or you can twist in the wind for all I care, but our alternative is a liar and an alleged thief in Robin Hayes. I know Larry for the honest, intelligent, caring man that he is.

NRCC Spokesperson lashes out at Larry on BlueNC?

Gee, imagine how frustrated this woman must feel for her to register here at BlueNC and comment on this thread. The Kissell campaign must be doing something right.

disguised?

Sweetie, it wasn't disguised as a blog post, it WAS a blog post. Do you not have blogs in the NRCC? How sad for you.

Ah well. You're going to have a lot to be sad about -- in November.

Hee.

I didn't even pick up on that, Linda

She's just feeling a little upset at how horribly the NRCC is doing with their fundraising...that and the fact that they had $1 million embezzled.

Robin Hayes lied. Nobody died, but thousands of folks lost their jobs.

NRCC Fundraising

About once a year, I get a voice mail from Congressman "x's" office letting me know I have been chosen to receive some "so and so of the year" award from the Congress.

The first time I got the call, I did a quick google search to see if the Congressman existed. He did, but was from some far away exotic state like New York. Then I searched some more about the awards and found that it was a way they raise money. You give them a few bucks and they give you an award. Even better, many professionals have been busted for putting this "prestigious" award on their resumes.

Not only is it a lame-ass fundraising scam, people use it on their resumes. If you click on the google search link above, you'll find many people who do press releases about "winning" the stupid award!

It is a telling sign of how

It is a telling sign of how far the netroots have come when the staff of the NRCC takes time out of their busy schedule to come to BlueNC to attempt to defend their attacks. Congratulations BlueNC, and congratulations to the Kissell campaign.

While the NRCC focuses on defending Robin Hayes against his own record, the North Carolina Democratic Party will continue to work for a better quality of life for the citizens of North Carolina's eighth district.

With Best Wishes,

Jerry
