OLF may have been a tipping point for Dole

One journalist who focused early and often on the Outlying Landing Field issue was Jack Betts. Today he points to Liddy Dole's miserable posturing on the issue as a critical moment that sent her political fortunes into a tail spin.

Dole missed a prime opportunity early on, when strong local oppositions developed in rural northeastern North Carolina to the Navy's proposed jet landing field near the Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge. It was a classic confrontation between ordinary citizens and a powerful government.

Many mistook it as a local dispute, nothing more than a NIMBY reaction. But national environmental groups, as well as farmland preservation advocates, saw it as an important test of whether the nation's environmental laws and property rights mean anything. It was the perfect chance for a politician to stand up for powerless people.

Betts gets is right as far as he goes, but he doesn't go far enough. Because not only did Dole fail to back We the People on this issue, she was actually part of the Republican majority that tried to ram the OLF through in the first place. She backed John Warner's plan to get the noisy jets out of Virginia by dumping them on North Carolina. In other words, she sold us out - and then got caught.

The other point Betts misses is the role of the blogosphere in pushing the OLF issue. Most traditional journalists had written this off as a done deal. Not only did bloggers help get the OLF on the national agenda, we also called out North Carolina leaders to take a stand.

Voters would be wise to remember that Liddy was FOR the OLF before she was against it. As one of our US Senators, she failed us miserably. And were it not for Democratic control of the House of Representative, that OLF would be well underway by now.

Senator From China AND Virginia

looks like she represents everyone EXCEPT the state she was elected to represent! Poor out-to-pasture Liddy....

OLF

I'm new to NC Blue...not a real blogger yet. Here is some information I found in Virginia documents....

The Navy has maintained the OLF is needed to support Field Carrier Landing Practices (FCLP) due to exceeded capacity to OLF Fentress. Clearly the above document reveals FCLP operations are restricted at NAS Oceana. Here we have the East Coast Master Jet Base with four runways that are designed for high performance aircraft unable to perform the mission for which it was intended, training our jet fighter aircraft pilots. Please read the Hampton Roads Joint Land Use Study.

Hi there Kiera

Welcome to BlueNC.

Like it or not, you are indeed an official blogger, having already made an official blog post.

:)

Thanks for the link. We've been covering the OLF mess for a couple of years now ... and there's lots of good stuff around.

I've lost track of where things stand with the various proposed sites. Can you give an update?

Liddy's half-hearted attempt to make OLF work for her:

I believe she set up a meeting - in Charlotte - and failed to show up.

Typical. I will be glad to see the back of Elizabeth Dole.

So where will she retire to?

Kansas or NC? If she moves to Kansas, it will prove her NC residency is disingenuous. If she moves to NC, will everyone feel bad for picking on her? ;-)

I doubt she'd move here

She didnt even vacation here. The OLF issue was a very hot one for my Mom, who has railed against it --and Elizabeth Dole--at every opportunity, all over the state. She likes to think she had a part in showing Biddy the door, and often says seeing the Tundra swan in Eastern NC is the most beautiful thing she has ever seen. Her passion for NC wildlife, and her profound disgust with Dole's "representation" spurred her to volunteer for Hagan. Thanks, Mom!

A Smut-Filled Tome

Feel bad for picking on her?

how is pointing out her lies and misrepresentation of our state picking on the Biddy?

True, t hat.

She was a terrible senator, no matter what her residency is/was. I'm glad Kay Hagan is taking that seat. I'm glad Elizabeth Dole will not be part of the 111th congress. I don't think pointing out her inefficiencies and misrepresentations constitute "picking on her". It's called telling the truth, and that's always a good thing.
