One Corps Health Care Action Day - Ideas?
Greetings all!
I was originally going to write this ONLY for the Chapel Hill, NC area folks, as we had our first meetup this week, and this was going to be the follow-up. However, I think that the advantage of the internet is that you can instantly have opinions from around the world, not just your one little corner. So, with that in mind, I'm going to list what I think are the major Headings of Action for Health Care and some of the ideas that were presented last night by Chapel Hill One Corps members.
I'd ask that all of you contribute new Headings or Ideas to the mix in the comments and I will update the post as time permits.
I posted this previously at johnedwards.com, but I was hoping that some locals would have ideas for me.
Okay, to me, all of our ideas could be broken down into two major Headings: Hand-up and Hand-out. I take these headings from the idea of giving people a "Hand-up and not a Hand-out", so in this case the Hand-out is educational/advocational literature, while the Hand-up is physical help.
Hand-up
- Volunteer at a free clinic in your area.
- Work with dentists to provide some sort of free check-ups or at-cost dental work for a day.
- Work with the elderly on the new enrollment for Medicare prescription drug program.
- Do something for mental health parity (any ideas?).
- Preventive Care/Nutrition presentation to younger kids (maybe show Super Size Me and provide healthy snacks?)
Hand-out
- Spread the word about Medicaid/Medicare/S-CHIP for children (nearly 3/4 of uninsured children are eligible for one of these programs).
- Draw attention to the uninsured through effective displays (people in blue-collar working clothes with big signs saying "I work full time, and have no health insurance" kind of thing, or a line of kids in black or red shirts to display what percentage have insurance and what percentage don't).
- Identify the top fears and myths about "universal health care" and address these; also, address the fact that we already pay for universal health care, we just don't get it.
- Make the issue immediate. Find local people who are suffering because of bad health insurance (50% of bankruptcies are related to health expenses and 76% of those people have insurance when they become ill or injured).
- Profile other countries, especially the cost-per-capita and the quality of care.
So, that is it. At this point I would also like to thank all the people who came to our first Social, Meet & Greet One Corps meeting, and I promise the next one will be run much better!

Ideas appreciated.
My personal opinion is that children without insurance would be the way to go. About 75% of them could be covered under existing plans - why are we not spending money just to let people know that?
Where are the candidates?
Dammit Robert, You're a Doctor, Not A....
Robert, you need a Saturday cabal. You're a hell of an idea man, but you're a doctor for chrissake, which has got to put a hell of a crimp in your ability to make things materialize. (Nevermind that you do make things materialize, which leads one to wonder what might happen if you gave up your day job for a life of itinerant activism. But I digress.) I am prescribing for you a local working group of like minded energetic people who get together once a week with pencils, paper and beer and divide your ideas into action steps, and then do them.
"Do them"
Is that supposed to happen?
The great thing about the One Corps is that I think they WILL make the ideas turn into action. I'm going to email the head of DHHS today and see if he has any ideas for awareness.

Robert, see below
There are many materials already available - for free. You, as a physician, have access to them in bulk - for free. You can request them, online, - for free. Your One Corps groups can use them as a starting point to hand out at an awareness event: perhaps a health screening - for free? Perhaps a car-seat safety check? Perhaps a door to door "did you know" campaign. Perhaps a radio public service announcement. Lots of ideas.

timeout.
I'm not a "Doctor", I'm a "doctor".
Where are the candidates?
ah....sorry. my bad.
I cop to having too quick a response time today. Sorry.
Most of the suggestions still apply, however. Most organizations can obtain those brochures. I bet even a One Corps chapter could. If not, I'd be glad to get them for you. They are very well done. If you had a supply of them, volunteering to help at a free clinic, or helping to organize a health screening, particularly in a low-income area, would be a great way to get the word out about the NC HC/HC program.
Most counties have a Health Check coordinator, usually housed in the Health Department - they might already have some programs going that you could tie into so that you're not duplicating efforts or reinventing the wheel.

Excellent information
Robin Hayes lied. Nobody died, but thousands of folks lost their jobs.
double ditto.
Where are the candidates?
I couldn't agree more
Free outreach materials to inform the public about NC Health Choice/Health Check (NC's S-CHIP) program here. You should be able to pick a small amount up at your local Health Department, Department of Social Services, or Smart Start Partnership, as well as other community offices. If anyone needs help getting them in bulk, please private message me, I'll be glad to help.
