Open Shred: Profiles in Courage

Amidst all the hullabaloo surrounding immigrants who are subsidizing NC citizens in our community college system, it's reassuring to know that the Gov has weighed in with a clear position on the dispute.

Easley, a Democrat, tried to distance himself from the rising controversy over the community college system's order that all 58 campuses must admit undocumented applicants who meet admissions requirements. He refused to say whether or not he supported the new policy.

..

While Easley said the community college officials misread the 1997 letter, he refused to stake out a position on the admissions mandate. Asked if the state government should do anything to change the practice, he suggested that the state's current attorney general, Roy Cooper, be asked for an opinion. Cooper's office on Wednesday refused to offer an opinion, saying community colleges had not asked for one.

I wonder, does it count if We the People ask for one? Probably not.

The Gov.

I know I havn't been very active in statewide party politics for very long but I don't think I have ever seen him at any state party function.

Does he ever make an apperance?

"jump in where you can and hang on"
Briscoe Darling to Sheriff Andy

He made an appearance at my house

years ago, but that's because I was hosting a fundraiser when he was running for AG. He hasn't stopped by since.

:)

He made a surprise visit to Vance Aycock last year

and gave a speech that knocked our socks off. It upstaged the invited speaker who ended up talking for less than 15 minutes. I didn't record it because I was saving my flash card for the main speaker but afterwards the whole place was buzzing. As in he's either running for President or running for US Senate. No way he came out west and did that for fun.

Yeah, he's not a big Party person. Perhaps because of how many people still moan that he doesn't have a patronage system like Hunt's. But that makes it sound like I like him and he's not impressed me in any way so far except for that speech.

In 04 he donated to Patsy Keever AFTER her election loss. And refused to be photographed with her when he came to the district. I found one photo of them together but I've never asked her when or where it was taken.

Cowardly

Also does make me wonder whether, despite all he has said to friends and acquaintances, whether he isn't contemplating a future run.

I can't imagine why he'd be afraid to speak up otherwise.

All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing

good point

It makes me wonder if these seasoned politicians even know how to express their own thoughts and feelings anymore. All they can do is give a canned answer, or avoid issues they are uncomfortable with altogether.

If being honestly concise, or frank, is trouble for politicians,

.....and I am elected.....I will already be in trouble prior to swearing in......

I cannot bear those who hide behind technicality, or use the shield of "needing more information" .

Elected officials MUST be answerable to the people who sent them and to those who they represent even if the answer is "I honestly do not know".

Sometimes "Passion to do", or "Passion to Express" in an effort at preservation of what took 265 years to achieve is exactly what Politicians should risk.

No Democrats have spoken out on this

Those of us who are actively speaking up and advocating are wondering when ANYONE in the Democratic Party will speak up. Although I'm not surprised at all that both Easley and Cooper are keeping mum. I'm sure this has created a giant headache for both of them. Too bad. Maybe it's a way for them to feel the pain of our immigrant friends.

An excellent piece at Political Junkies

I'm reading this blog regularly now, and generally find it well-researched and well-presented. Today's post deals with the nitty-gritty of partisan and judicial politics around "the sanctity of marriage." Worth the read.

And speaking for that sanctity . . . how about this remarkable finding:

A recent study by the Barna Research Group ... interviewed 3,854 adults from the 48 contiguous states. The margin of error is ±2 percentage points. The survey found:

11% of the adult population is currently divorced.
25% of adults have had at least one divorce during their lifetime.
Divorce rates among conservative Christians were significantly higher than for other faith groups, and much higher than Atheists and Agnostics experience.

George Barna, president and founder of Barna Research Group, commented:

"While it may be alarming to discover that born again Christians are more likely than others to experience a divorce, that pattern has been in place for quite some time. Even more disturbing, perhaps, is that when those individuals experience a divorce many of them feel their community of faith provides rejection rather than support and healing. But the research also raises questions regarding the effectiveness of how churches minister to families. The ultimate responsibility for a marriage belongs to the husband and wife, but the high incidence of divorce within the Christian community challenges the idea that churches provide truly practical and life-changing support for marriages."

Amazing.

There's a church around the corner from me. Every time I go for a walk I promise I'll take a camera with me. There is a permanent sign for a divorce support group. One night a week there are four signs for the group.

The biggest wingnut on "defense of marriage" is Fred Smith who divorced his mentally ill first wife.

Patti agreed to go with me to see a marriage counselor. We talked with him for hours, together and separately. After speaking with Patti alone in his office, he came out and sat beside me in the waiting room. In a quiet, calm voice, he encouraged me to get a divorce as soon as possible. Your marriage is already over. You need to do something to take care of the children. They cannot be in this situation any longer. These jarring words pushed me toward action.
In August of 1979, I filed papers seeking separation from Patti and complete custody of our children.

It's hard to know what goes on inside a marriage

and I won't judge someone else's -- even Mr. Smith's. Sometimes the best defense of a family can be a divorce. :/.

Not all churches are opposed to divorce, either.

However -- I have said before, and I will say again: If your marriage is threatened by the relationships of others - straight or gay, you have deeper problems in your marriage, and no law or amendment is going to fix it. If your marriage is sound - straight or gay - then a lack of an amendment will not hurt your relationship.

HOWEVER: If your marriage is with someone of the same gender, you deserve to be recognized legally the same way as someone who is in a relationship with someone of the opposite gender. It comes down to equal protection and separation of church and state. (In my considered opinion.)

Not too surprising ...

It's political calculus (the hard stuff). The expenditure of serious political capital integrated over the benefit gained for several hundred nonvoters = zero involvement.

Shame.

And Helms begat Reagan...

Arguably, Ronald Reagan's Helms enabled win in the 1976 NC primary was all the encouragement he needed to try again in 1980, setting the stage for the Reagan Revolution and synergistic escapades like this one...

TrueMeckDem on Myers Park Pat

"My opinion of Pat has changed over the years. I used to think he was truly a man of the people but the longer he has been mayor, the less I think of him.

As with most cities, Charlotte has three political parties: Dem, Rep, and Chamber of Commerce. Pat is definitely the puppet of the COC here. What is good for business is good for Charlotte and Pat ... very personable guy, he has gotten a bunch of Dems in these parts to vote for him but I don't trust him."
