Our Senators vote with Wal-Mart--and against port security
Would Liddy Dole and Richard Burr go on a flight out of Charlotte/Douglas or RDU if only 5% of the passengers had been screened? Not likely. So why in the world would they vote to continue allowing only
Arizona Sen. Jon Kyl joined other Senate Republicans, a few Democrats and the business lobby in defeating a plan that would have required security scans of all imports at U.S. ports.
Business groups opposed a proposal favored by New York Sen. Charles Schumer that would have a required all shipping containers coming into U.S. ports be scanned.
Democrats favoring the bill said it would help protect against dangerous and hazardous materials being shipped into the U.S. by terrorists, and would improve port security.
The Schumer amendment was tabled 58-38. Dole and Burr joined all but one of their fellow Repubs in voting to table it. It passed the House 229-128--and it looks like Freedom Fries Jones was the only NC House Repub to vote aye.
Wal-Mart claims that 100% scanning would drive up costs that they'd have to pass onto us. None of us mind paying extra for plane tickets since 9-11. What's the difference in paying extra at Wal-Mart? None that I can tell.
Wake Up Wal-Mart just started a letter-writing campaign urging the Senate to put the amendment back in ... methinks now's as good a time as any to crash Dole and Burr's inboxes.
I already mentioned this on DKos--so recommends would be appreciated.

We need to plaster this security lapse (or potential security lapse) all over the Republicans who endorsed it.
Robin Hayes lied. Nobody died, but thousands of folks lost their jobs.

The Republicans are soft on security and Homeland Defense.
Imagine that.
