Pandering

Fred Smith, who many believe will take the cake in the Party of Greed gubernatorial primary, has been out on his Barbecue Express in Camden County. There the angry old man reached a new low in pandering.

CAMDEN — State Sen. Fred Smith, R-Johnston, believes given the right economic incentives, a Navy practice airfield could work in North Carolina. But from what he's seen of Camden County, it's not the place for an outlying landing field. Like many other state and local officials, Smith disagrees with locating the Navy's proposed OLF in an area that won't receive enough jobs and other economic benefits to compensate for the jet noise the airfield will generate.

"I think it's got to be a win-win situation," Smith, a Republican candidate for governor, said in an interview Saturday. "I believe there should be some places where (an OLF) would work; but it's got to be one that's a benefit to North Carolina."

Pardon my French, but Fred Smith is a lyin' sack of sugar. "I believe there should be some places where it would work?" Oh really? Like where, Mr. Smith? Don't you even know enough about the State you want to be Governor of to have an opinion as to which county should be turned into a dumping ground for US Navy noise?

When speaking to people in Camden County, Fred Smith gushed with opinions that those good folks shouldn't have to deal with an OLF. Does he have the nerve to stand in front of North Carolina citizens in ANY county and tell them he wants to put a landing field in their back yards? Just how many jobs and "other economic benefits" does it take to compensate people for ruining their lives, their farms, their families and their peace and quiet?

Fred Smith doesn't know what the hell he's talking about. Which is pretty much what you should expect from a guy who says building roads is the centerpiece of his environmental platform.

Doesn't he just LOOK ashamed of himself?

Hey polifreakinticians

this OLF cannot go any where the local people do not wish it.

Why do I say that? The local community and government will have the responsibility of maintaining the viability of that facility once it is built. We know that facility is not needed so we do not want that responsibility. 53 jobs is not worth trading a community for. In the short and long run, its a horrible trade.

Smitty, what part of we do not want it don't you understand? The county commissioners said no thank you. Basnight has said no thank you. State Senator Jones has said no thank you.

We are not opposing this OLF because the incentives are not lucrative enough. We are opposing it because it is not needed (now we gotta wait for the new EIS to see if that language is still there).

Thanks to people like smith, the door is always open for the Navy to try to put this thing in our region.

Smith, u want some freaking votes? How about listening to the people of the region. We do not want it. There is no local support for it. The only entity that wants it besides Owens (same reason as you, incentives) is the dang Navy.

I know this OLF is a political tool. People like smith keep validating that for me.

Get off this dang incentives kick and listen to the people.

Listen to the issue. There is more to being a polifreakintican then jobs and votes. Listening to the people is very important.

For 8 years, 5 counties of NE North Carolina have fought and educated people on what an OLF is. Before you open your trap, try finding out what the thing is and how it will impact the community. Realize first and foremost that it is not and never will be needed to support Oceana and Fentress. Remember, 30,000 acres of the State you wish to govern was authorized to be condemned for this OLF that the Navy now says they will put someplace else. If there was a genuine need for this thing and seeings how we are at war, planes would be bouncing at Washington/Beaufort County right now. Are they? Nope...because,,,,,,shhhhuuuuusssssshhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, its not needed. Proof that what I have been saying is true.

Investigate the information presented, $53,000/year to be a gate guard of an unmanned facility? If your buying that crap, you do not have the intelligence to represent me. If you can be that easily buffooned please save us all a lot of heart ache, pull your name from the ballot or better yet, go ahead and stay as the GOP candidate, your going to be to easy to destroy.

This goes for any polifreakintician that believed the Navy's economic package.

Stop siding with the Navy on this project. It is bad for North Carolina.

Fred doesn't care what we think

but I do hope he reads this and realizes that it's not just commie libruls from Chapel Hill or NIMBYs from Washington County who are against this monstrosity. Every decent and honest person in North Carolina is against it.

Or how about this, Fred. Maybe you can arrange for the OLF to be located next to one of your multi-gazillion dollar golf-course communities.

Fred is safe

from that. the Navy has chosen their two sites and there aint a golf course for miles of either one.

Fred is a "so long as it is not in my back yard" politician. sooo what would that be. SLAINIMBY politician, I do not care how it impacts you?

I wonder if smitty knew about the choices being reduced to 2 in NC. Even if he did not, for him to state, knowing that their was a finite set of choices that only impacted poor and sparsely (low voter numbers) communities, "that one of these choices has gotta be good for NC" shows he does not care for the issues of the region. He is unstudied on what the region is concerned about. He does not care. Your a vote only. Once you vote, your nothing to me. Here, have a cookie, I will govern you the way I want. Your nothing. Vote for me! I went to a barbecue!

On the other side of the aisle

I dont feel like searching for an open thread.

I just saw a 60 second Richard Moore ad. I thought it was much better than his 2 minute one (or it was the 2 minute one and Im seeing it through new eyes, but I dont think thats true). It wasnt a great ad, but t was pretty darn good.

Its the second ad I have seen in 2 days. Last night was Perdue on CNN during the debate. Tonight was Moore during the Office on TBS.

"Keep the Faith"

The ads.

I think both Perdue and Moore have good background ads now. My wife saw this one and was really taken, just as she was supposed to be.

I just saw the Richard Moore ad on TV (last night I guess) and I though it was much better.

BTW, didn't I get an email saying Perdue was coming out with a new health care television ad?

Okay, I might have officially lost it.

I could have sworn I saw this Monday night, maybe during the debate?

Easley also pandering?

Maybe it's just because I don't hate Fred Smith, but according to today's Charlotte Observer, Gov. Easley said pretty much the same thing that Fred Smith is being chastised for on this blog.

From the Char. Observer - 1/24/08 - "Sen. Dole and Gov. Easley have told the Navy it will be impossible to put the outlying landing fields in those counties without local support. Gov. Easley has suggested the Navy offer local communities a significant facility that would create more new jobs and give the local area an economic boost."

Easley also didn't specify which county. I guess after two terms as governor, he doesn't doesn't have an opinion about which county should be the dumping ground either. But how come Easley isn't pandering?

Maybe because he's not running for anything?

Just a thought.

I don't hate Fred Smith either

But I do think he's a jerk and that he doesn't have the mental faculties to qualify as dog-catcher, much less a member of the General Assembly, and far less a governor.

I don't recall being part of a conversation that chastized Fred Smith, though, so I thought I'd drop it in here: He's not a bright bunny.

Fred Smith

There a dozens of posts here at BlueNC about the OLF, Mike Easley's positions on the issue, and a lot more. If you read them, you'll find plenty of criticism of Easley for saying essentially the same thing that Smith has said. Here's one of them.

You've been registered here for 36 minutes. You might have spent some of that time reviewing the record.

Sorry

That's wasn't a very kind welcome. I apologize for jumping on you. Especially since it's tricky sometimes for new people to navigate the past two years of posts here.

So welcome to BlueNC. I think you'll find we're just as hard on Democrats as Republicans, though maybe not as smart-assy.

I'm just relieved to find you snapping at someone else.
