One reason we might never see Pat McCrory's tax returns could be because he doesn't want us to know how much he makes from speaking fees. In October 2010 a check in the amount of $2,500 from the Atlanta Regional Commission was deposited into his campaign account, apparently by accident. In October 2010 McCrory was a keynote speaker for the commission's Regional Leadership Institute annual dinner.
The speaker for this year’s annual dinner, which will be held from 5 p.m. – 8 p.m. on October 17, 2010, at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre, is Pat McCrory, former Mayor of Charlotte, NC.
A third quarter report showed the deposit. A fourth quarter report showed a reimbursement to Pat McCrory in the amount of $2,605 with the notation:
$2500.00 was refund for personal check deposited into campaign account. $105.00 was for campaign taxes paid by candidate.
A quick search shows that McCrory has been a keynote speaker at events across the southeast in the past 3 years from Florida to Tennessee.

Speaking fees
Back when I was doing some digging on Liddy Dole, it appeared that the brunt of her (incalculable) personal income came from speaking engagements. It's a very effective way of funneling money to a candidate/official, especially if they speak in front of a non-profit or other group that conceals its funding.

It's clear that Duke Energy and Moore & Van Allen have been paying McCrory to run for governor, and now you've disclosed another part of his mysterious scam. Who knew it was possible for a candidate to be paid to give campaign speeches!
