Politics. As usual.

Many observers think the race for governor in 2008 will come down to which of two Democratic Council of State members can out 'good-old-boy' the other ... Bev Perdue or Richard Moore.

(On the wingnut Republican side, the likely candidate is Paving King Fredly Smith, who will have the unenviable job of convincing North Carolinians that asphalt plants are our friends. Smith has more money than god, and doesn't mind spending it. Chances are he'll burn enough cash to make things competitive, but I'm predicting it will be for naught. People are starting to catch on. The government-hating right is filled with hypocrites who slop at the public trough (like Smith does) when it serves to line their bulging pockets.)

Which brings us back to the Dick and Bev Show.

Though Lt. Gov. Perdue is most assuredly a woman, she can sling down-home bulloney with the best of them and is already building a sizeable war chest. Plus Roy Cooper is out of the race, which makes her the greenest (as in environmentalist) candidate in the pack. She's also the go-to choice for those of us who are sick of being subjugated to the politics of white old rich men. I hate that Perdue voted for the goddamned lottery, but I need to get over it. She's going to be the next governor.

From what I know about Richard Moore, he's ambitious and competent, and already working hard in the race for the mansion. He's also plastering his face all over god's earth in his role as NC Treasurer.

One program Moore is pushing to the limits of political propriety is something called NC Cash which returns unclaimed property to its rightful owners. This kind of program is up and running in most states, and it's a good thing for the people of North Carolina. But is it a good thing for Moore to be using the program as part of his gubernatorial campaign?

My wife went to the trouble to reclaim some lost money using the NC Cash program - and today received a check for around sixty bucks, along with this flyer. In case you can't read it, here's the copy at the bottom of the piece.

"It's my job to put your cash back in your pocket. Please check out NCCash.com. It's easy, and it's free."

Hmmmm. I thought Mr. Moore's job was to be a responsible steward of the state's finances.

I don't fault Moore for promoting himself this way. It's legal. Just like it's legal for Art Pope to spend corporate money to buy elections for the state legislature. Just like it's legal for George Bush to fly all over the country on Air Farce One, raising money for government-hating theocrats dedicated to destroying America's moral standing.

I know it's legal. But it shouldn't be.

If he's running, he needs to say so.

I've learned the hard way many times, early support matters. And in North Carolina, it seems to matter a lot. From what I know, that's one reason Cooper decided to pass on running ... Moore and Perdue got out ahead and have not let

I wish someone could come out of nowhere with strong progressive ideals and take the cake, but it seems unlikely. I wish early support didn't matter so much, but it apparently does. And so does money.

I still don't understand how Progressives can be against a person making a choice to buy a lottery ticket.

At this point, I am pro-Perdue, and not anti-anybody.

Speaking, I guess, only for myself

This progressive is NOT against a person making a choice to buy a lottery ticket. And I'm not just saying that—I harbor no ill will towards anyone who buys a lottery ticket. Nor do I condescend.

My problem is with leaders who support regressive public funding schemes.

lottery

Should the state be involved in the lottery at all? Perhaps it should be limited to the private-sector. I can agree that it seems kind of silly for the state to be involved in the lottery at all, but NOT that there shouldn't be a lottery. Personal freedom, unfortunately, it a messy business. We restrict personal freedom at times, for instance no one would agree with "aborting" an 8 month old fetus. Similarly, the choice to gamble is a personal choice that we allow to be legislated by the Bible. Should there be limits? Of course, but the underlying freedom to buy a lottery ticket should not be taken away because some people might misuse it.

I am going to post later this week on gun regulations, which in my mind is part of the big trifecta of personal liberty; fetuses, guns, and gambling.

I don't like gambling, but if

people want to do it, fine. But I have GIGANTIC problems with government-run gambling. And even BIGGER problems with a government scheme to pay for education on the backs of regressive funding policy.

If we want top rate education in North Carolina, we should be willing to pay for it the old fashioned way ... with taxes.

I think I can agree with that.

The state-run lottery is just another way of admitting to the Republican talking point that taxes are bad.

Lt Gov

Beverly Perdue is very very very impressive. I had met her before, but we got her to come down and headline a fundraiser for Lyndon on the 12th. She is absolutely amazing, and unlike our president, is incredibly intelligent. I have nothing against Richard Moore, I just really hope that the Lt. Gov wins.

In other news, that anti-gas tax guy who is now running anti-brown people ads is also going to run for governor. He is the real wingnut of the group, which will probably allow Fred Smith to portray himself as the "moderate Republican choice" which will work out great for those of us who want to see his political career buried.

"Keep the Faith"

I'm a Perdue supporter.

And I agree that she's impressive. I've been to several events where she's spoken recently, and I will back her all the way.

She knows there are plenty of people that don't like her vote on the lottery, and she knows I'm one of them. But that's a single issue ... and I've learned the hard way that single issue politics is a losing proposition.

Bev Perdue will be good for North Carolina.

He wouldn't have to resort to this

If she'd stop slapping her name all over all those chickens.

Heh

Someone didn't get enough sleep last night. One Guess!
