Poor Fred
Fred Smith, the Asphalt King, is out playing his sad story to the Republican Club in Haywood County. It's like deja vu all over again:
Senator Fred Smith, candidate for governor, related growing up in an orphanage where his parents worked and taught. He described college footballs days, law school and service in the United States Army, and service as state Senator. He spoke of what it would mean to the people in our state to have a conservative governor.
How's that for exciting reporting! Seriously, what's with the orphanage saga at the top of every Fred Smith news story? No matter how Smith lays it out, it always sounds like he was a sad little disadvantaged pauper growing up in a Charles Dickens novel . . . and of course he does it on purpose.
When I asked my one Republican friend what the heck this is all about, he said, "Well, it's true, isn't it?" Yeah, sure it's true. But it's also true that Fred Smith has been slopping at the public trough for years, pulling in multi-million dollar government contracts for his paving company. How come he doesn't talk about that when he's out bragging about his conservative credentials?
What would mean to have a conservative governor? From where I sit it would mean: fewer services for those most in need, more paving contracts, environmental degradation, discrimination based on sexual orientation, the rich getting richer, and four horrendous years of dealing with an unapologetic egomaniac in the governor's mansion.

$45 million and counting.
The past month DOT added two more projects (bridges in Wake County) to the CC Mangum till totalling $2.2 million which brings Fred's NC State Government haul to over $45 million for the past year.
The "ophanage" may have been a formative experience, like the "mill" was for Robin Hayes, but it must have been walking away from his mentally ill first wife that prepared him to fight in "defense of marriage".
this is true?
Gotta love those family values!
Read the book
Too true. Now deceased.

I bet that was a small gathering of folks formerly registered to vote in Florida.
Couldn't stomach it
I was recovering from a dear friend's wedding celebration and couldn't stomach sycophants. Thanks for relaying the non-story, Anglico. I'm bound to attend a ton of these kinds of things leading up to '08, and getting it all on camera.

All growing up in a an orphanage did for Fred
was give him a lifelong ingrained sense of birth rite superiority over everyone else around him. He was not an orphan in that home. He was the son of the management. And he acts like he still is. My opinion.
"They took all the trees and put them in a tree museum Then they charged the people a dollar 'n a half just to see 'em. Don't it always seem to go that you don't know what you've got till it's gone? They paved paradise and put up a parking lot."
