PPP: Jim Neal vs. Elizabeth Dole

PPP Blog. Complete results here.

Getting right to it:

Dole vs. Neal
Dole 47%
Neal 32%

Neal performs similarly to other Democrats that lack statewide name recognition. His results are similar to Grier Martin, Kay Hagan and Jerry Meek. Dole is still below the 50% mark.

Bush Job Approval
Approve 36%
Disapprove 59%

Dole Job Approval
Approve 44%
Disapprove 41%

Bush and Dole fall a few points from last month.

Right-track/Wrong-track USA
Right direction 26%
Wrong track 67%

Right-track/Wrong-track North Carolina
Right direction 37%
Wrong track 47%

People feel significantly better about North Carolina than they do about the whole country, but neither is very positive.

Vote for Governor
Democrat 45%
Republican 38%

Vote for President
Democrat 44%
Republican 40%

As expected, the Democrats have an early advantage in the gubernatorial general election, but more surprisingly a generic Democrat continues to win for President in North Carolina. In May a generic Democrat was winning 47-42.

Excellent, Justin

Neal probably has less name recognition than Grier or Hagan simply by the fact that he has no district in which he's run for election at all. I think this bodes well for his chances. Thanks for sharing.

Neal Won't Win

Being gay in itself will cost him the election. People in this state won't vote for a gay guy. It shouldn't matter, but it will.

Carolina Politics Online

I know plenty of people who will vote for a gay guy

Maybe you should have said "a lot of zealots and ignorant people in North Carolina would rather have a certified Bushbot who is ruining our country in the Senate than a gay man."

It shouldn't matter, but it will as long as it does, and then it won't.

Bravo, A.

Once it happens, then it won't matter.

North Carolina. Turning the South Blue!

I don't think we should pull any punches, so I'm not.

Your statement is no different than saying "Barack obama won't win. Being black will in itself cost him the election. People in this state won't vote for a black guy. It shouldn't matter, but it will."
If you are not willing to utter the above, then you shouldn't be willing to utter the same about Jim Neal.

This is a time for Democrats to put up or shut up.

You can't have equal rights and civil rights just for some people, you have to have them for all people. Anyone who disagrees deserves the Bush Administration.

Well said Robert P.!!!

Well said.

I Don't Disagree With You

I am just telling you what I know is reality. The south is still very much socially conservative and those rural folks aren't going to take well to his sexual preference. It's going to take more than city dwellers to elect this guy and I don't think he'll get it because of this one issue.

As far as Obama goes, everyone knows that Hillary already has it wrapped up. The Clintons never lose.

Carolina Politics Online

You can't know it's reality.

It hasn't happened yet, therefore, it's just your fantasy, or prediction.

And as far as the top of the ticket goes - I'm not sure that's going to matter much in NC. We've gone Blue in every other race even when the top was Red. Your statement about Obama and Clinton makes no sense in relation to this discussion. As a matter of fact, I wouldn't be surprised to see Obama or Edwards do better in NC than Clinton does. That would be my prediction, based on the fact that I live here and I read local papers, attend local meetings, etc. I wouldn't be surprised at all.

Well, this ain't SC, CP.

It's North Carolina. Boseman already broke down the door here. A whole lot of people have had the chance to see that being gay neither qualifies nor disqualifies a candidate for office.

I'll agree that there are a lot of bigots in this world who think differently, but they're all radical RW Republicans and they won't vote for Neal because he's a Dem, not because he's gay.

oh really?

Being gay in itself will cost him the election. People in this state won't vote for a gay guy. It shouldn't matter, but it will

Bushshit.

The 100th Monkey Effect

holds true for all behavior...yes?

No matter that patriotism is too often the refuge of scoundrels. Dissent, rebellion, and all-around hell-raising remain the true duty of patriots.

Since When is Campbell Brown My Hero?

Trying to get a straight answer out of McCain spokesman Tucker Bounds.

BTW: I'm glad that Talking Points Memo posted this excerpt on Youtube, but since when does TiVo'ing something allow you to brand it with your logo? That's the Wild West...
