President Clinton is coming to speak in Asheboro Tomorrow!

The President will be coming to us after previous events in Hillsborough and at Elon College; after us he'll be moving along to Lexington before he finishes up in Statesville. So be warned: the caravan may be coming to a place near you!

What a year in local politics! I've done this for more than 30 years and haven't seen this kind of national attention. Last week from Obama, the grassroots organizing; this week from Clinton, the big kahuna is deployed.

The best thing for the Democratic party is that it looks to me that the campaigns are mobilizing different sections of the voters- Obama is getting out the African-American and youth vote; Clinton is getting out women and senior Dems. No judgment there-- those are the alignments evident from their rabid supporters who are making our local events happen. If the campaigns galvanize their respective bases, the big winner is the NC Democratic party, no matter what national talking heads say about the prolonged campaign.

I just wish it was a general election and not just a primary- it might have a real impact here in Randolph County. Do you think the effect will linger?

So Exciting!

It's really history happening, isn't it! What time do you expect him to be in Asheboro? I'm an Obama girl, but I'm not sure I can resist the temptation to see an ex-President.

I do think the effects will linger - if we as party leaders reach out to the local leaders of both camps. After the nominee is determined, there will be one group that is disappointed. It will be up to local leadership to show them the benefits of staying involved, and working for a Democratic ticket.

Mac Whatley's picture

He is scheduled to be here at 5:30

but even his advance men talk about "Clinton Time," which evidently means that he can't help himself when he's talking to people and habitually runs late.
He'll start in Hillsborough at 1:30; be at Elon College at 3:30; Asheboro at 5:30; Thomasville (changed from Lexington) at 6:45; and then Statesville about 8:30.

I hope we'll get everybody to come-- this is the first ex-president in Asheboro in living memory. There have been tired Clinton jabs from die-hard Republicans, but I expect everyone to want to see President Bill.

I'll know more later after I hear from the advance staff again.

And yes, it is exciting!

Mac, Elon College doesn't exist anymore...

The school is now Elon University and the town is now just plain Elon.

But don't feel bad. That's where I grew up (from age 13), and I still say it the old way from time to time.

I got to see Bill

didn't get to ask him my question, though. I did get to meet and hug John Conyers and last night met so many people - candidates and Sean Astin (really only took a picture as I'm no fan girl :D ). This has been very exciting.

Robin Hayes lied. Nobody died, but thousands of folks lost their jobs.

I can't do it. :(

We've got a party officer's meeting at 6. Well, Mac, tell Bill that "Linda says 'Hi'".

And Helms begat Reagan...

Arguably, Ronald Reagan's Helms enabled win in the 1976 NC primary was all the encouragement he needed to try again in 1980, setting the stage for the Reagan Revolution and synergistic escapades like this one...

TrueMeckDem on Myers Park Pat

"My opinion of Pat has changed over the years. I used to think he was truly a man of the people but the longer he has been mayor, the less I think of him.

As with most cities, Charlotte has three political parties: Dem, Rep, and Chamber of Commerce. Pat is definitely the puppet of the COC here. What is good for business is good for Charlotte and Pat ... very personable guy, he has gotten a bunch of Dems in these parts to vote for him but I don't trust him."
