Public hearing on death penalty

An intense public hearing today before the House Select Committee on Capital Punishment. Mark Kleinschmidt has a rundown on his blog and over on Exile there's audio of a really incredible bit of testimony—in the truest sense of that word—by Shirley Burns. She's the mother of one son who is to be executed in 12 days and the grieving mother of another son who was murdered eight months ago.

Exile on Jones Street: Shirley Burns testimony

AP story on the hearing.

From Mark Kleinschmidt:

At least fourteen members of the public shared their opinions on the death penalty. The highlight, and certainly The Story of The Day was the presentation made by Shirley Burns. Ms. Burns explained to the Committee that her analyses of the issue was born of two perspectives – that of the mother of a son murdered last April, and that of the mother of Marcus Robinson who is scheduled to be executed on January 26 of this year.

Ms. Burns, obviously familiar with the religious arguments of death penalty supporters spent some of her allotted time responding to earlier comments made by Christian Action League Executive Director Mark Creech. Rev. Creech had earlier chastised the Committee for spending any time considering the possibility that an innocent person might someday be executed by the State. He said that while many of those speaking out against the death penalty earnestly believed and had compelling statistics to support them that a moratorium on executions was needed, that nonetheless, the Committee shouldn’t be concerned. Instead he quoted scripture reminding the legislature that State executions were a tool given to government by God.

Thanks

Thanks for this post. The testimony of Shirley Burns was especially moving. One can only imagine the heartache this poor woman has endured.

I'm 56 years old. I moved to North Carolina five years ago. The previous twenty-five years I spent as a resident of Chicago's north shore and before that Wisconsin, Utah and California. I live in Moore County. My Congressman is Howard Coble, my State Sen

Killing is a "tool given to government by God?"

I'm constantly amazed by the ability of so-called Christians to ignore the commandments they don't like.

It seems to me "Thou shalt not kill" is pretty clear. Its a pretty long stretch to add "unless you can convince a bunch of randomly-selected yet 'death-qualified' people to vote on it."

Beatitude whatzit?

* Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. (Verse 3)
* Blessed are the meek: for they shall posses the land. (Verse 4)
* Blessed are they who mourn: for they shall be comforted. (Verse 5)
* Blessed are they that hunger and thirst after justice: for they shall have their fill. (Verse 6)
* Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy. (Verse 7)
* Blessed are the clean of heart: for they shall see God. (Verse 8)
* Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God. (Verse 9)
* Blessed are they that suffer persecution for justice' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. (Verse 10)

That's what real Christianity is all about.

DQ, what's your sign?

No matter that patriotism is too often the refuge of scoundrels. Dissent, rebellion, and all-around hell-raising remain the true duty of patriots.

What else but LEO!!!!

The hubby, too. It's quite an ego battle when we're both on stage!

I didn't see your question, Momo, when I was posting above so I said more there. I used to read charts for people. It's amazing stuff.

Not sure how it works but I once ran into a woman in a cafeteria who saw me as I walked in. She said, "My god. You're a Leo, with an Aries moon and Sagitarius rising. I can see the ram's horns. What fire!"

And then she walked away and I never saw her again.

Wish I knew more about it

this has been fun.

It's addictive

Once you get people's birth information . . . The best thing is that when I look at the chart of someone I despise, I always find them facing so many challenges that I immediately sympathise. I often realize they are doing the best they can.

I need Patrick McHenry's birth data. Anyone know?

Libra Sun, Taurus moon,

Taurus moon folks are THE most stubborn (married to one.) People are far more prone to exhibit the negative traits of their moon sign.

Without his birth time, I can't do a whole lot.

But, looking at his other planet placements: It must be his venus in Virgo that makes him "anal."

And for those of you aware of the rumors, that's a really tasteless astrology joke.

How did this get under death penalty?

Is it bad to move a conversation over to the source post? This seems weird to be here. I thought I was in anglico's astrological post when I answered momo!

Perhaps one day Patrick McHenry will face the death penalty and this will all make sense.

Jack Betts has an opinion piece

in this morning's Observer (Sunday 7th). I don't know if he's talking about a different meeting, but it seems not much is happening. Are they really listening...or is listening all the intend to do?

Robin Hayes lied. Nobody died, but thousands of folks lost their jobs.
