Republicans vs. Students (2006 version)

Meet Virginia Foxx's hand-picked candidate for the State Senate - David Blust.

The following is at an open candidate forum from the campus of Appalachian State University. The question is...
SHOULD STUDENTS BE ALLOWED TO VOTE???

I give you Republican David Blust...

Blust comes in and tells us 1) that we don't know jack shit, and 2) that we shouldnt be allowed to vote in local elections!!

ive run for office here, and I've taken issues to the county commission and town council and worked for local candidates (both democrat and republican) and i have canvassed the county and am a vice-chairman on the Watauga County Democratic Party. I live and work and pay taxes and rent and breathe air and love mountains in your district. For David Blust to tell me that I'm not allowed to vote (then ASK for my vote)is completely un-American.

It also goes against the decisions of the US Supreme Court. In a 1979 decision, they ruled that students can vote whereever we live.

This shows what Republicans think on the bottom line. Spread democracy worldwide, but keep it at an arms length locally.

I don't know how it is on other campuses, but the Republicans have systematically tried to keep us locked out of the system here in Watauga County by moving our polling places, launching criminal investigations into groups registering voters, working to keep provisional ballots un-counted and voter registrations with the slighest errors out.

They dont believe in democracy.

...I went on my own volition. I was not "forced" to go to the forum as mr. blust suggests. And neither were 90% of the people attending there, as the following Democrat - Cullie Tarleton - made sure to point out via show of hands...

I should also point out that Blust's opponent is the amazing Dem Steve Goss!

and so does his common sense. Yeah, every freshman I know registers to vote the first effing day they arrive at school.

So, if he's right, students can register to vote after 30 days, right? Then they can vote after 90 days, correct? When do they usually arrive at school? Mid August? 90 days from mid-august is what boys and girls? Mid-effing-November. That's right. Ding ding ding. The A--hole gets the prize! Too late to vote the first year they've moved to school.

So what he's basically saying is he doesn't think that 19 year olds are capable of understanding how local government's operate and they aren't capable of making decisions about what's best for the city they live in.

He probably thinks its just A-O-Tay to send them to have their arms, legs and heads blown off in Iraq.

When can you vote?

To vote in Watauga County you must:

* have been a county resident for 30 days by the date of the election,
* be registered in Watauga County.

When can you register

If mailed, the registration form must be postmarked at least 25 days prior to the election.

GREAT point about making them wait till mid-November. He's such a jerk.

So, he doesn't even know the laws of the state
