Burr Spin Machine Wobbles

Imagine you're a hard-workin' lawnmower salesman who one day lands in a sparkly new Senate office with corporate executives hauling in bags of money to get your attention. It must be thrilling, maybe even head-spinning, which could easily explain why you might consider yourself above little old values like truth and integrity.

For example, would an ethical lawnmower salesman stoop to misrepresenting a competitor's product to make a sale? How about an ethical United States Senator?

In voting against the $787 billion economic stimulus bill last February, U.S. Sen. Richard Burr called it a "hastily written bill" that would ensure "a massive debt for our grandchildren."

Last week in Bethlehem, N.C, he called a $2 million grant from the bill "a great thing for this county."

Does Senator Burr mean that the hastily written bill is a great thing for this country, or that a massive debt for our grandchildren is a great thing for this country? Which is it, Senator Burr?

And then there's the matter of the Franken amendment, which would have given more protections to rape victims working as contractors in Iraq.

Republican Sen. Richard Burr has been accused by a Democratic opponent of voting against protecting rape victims working as contractors in Iraq, a charge that he denies.

North Carolina Secretary of State Elaine Marshall noted that Burr was one of 30 Republican senators who voted last week against an amendment that grew out of a publicized case of a Halliburton employee who was gang-raped by co-workers, Rob Christensen reports.

Burr claims that the amendment won't deliver what's needed to protect rape victims, and 29 other white male Republicans agreed with him. But the amendment passed anyway, 68 to 30, with every Democrat and all the Republican women voting for it.

According to Burr spinner, David Ward, "Senator Burr believes violence against women is despicable and intolerable, and those who have committed or abetted such heinous crimes should be subjected to the full weight of the law. Unfortunately, the Franken amendment would not do anything to protect women from violence or to punish criminals. If it had, Senator Burr would certainly have voted for the amendment."

So answer me this, Mr. Ward. If your boss believes violence against women is despicable and intolerable - and that the Franken amendment doesn't do anything to solve the problem - exactly what has he proposed to do about it?

From what I've been able to find, your most honest response would be, "Absolutely nothing."

Speaking of integrity challenges

How about this sucking up to Burr by Erskine Bowles?

"I've had a chance to work with this guy (Burr) for four full years and nobody works harder or smarter for North Carolina than Richard Burr does," Bowles told about 200 people at N.C. Central University. "His focus on this state is truly unbelievable."

In trying to make sense of this, I think the National Review got it right:

... it's important to understand that Bowles was presumably making these comments not as Burr's former opponent but as the guy who now, as president of the state's university system, relies on Burr's help to get federal money. In other words, if one of North Carolina's U.S. Senate seats was still held by Jesse Helms--who, in addition to his many other sins, once referred to UNC as the "University of Negroes and Communists"--I bet Bowles would be saying nice things about him, too, so long as there was the possibility that Helms could get the state's universities more federal aid. Bowles is just doing his job.

That's not just doing a job, Erskine. That's doing a hand job.

great post James

Thanks for this and the Burr files section.

Thanks!

I'm not getting a lot of feedback these days ... so I really appreciate your comment.

I wish I could be a cool as Rachel Maddow!

Haywood...we'll have graphics for

all of the Senate challengers, house Dem challengers, etc. etc. This one was an easy one to complete. I don't want to add graphics until we have enough current posts on the candidates. It would be a shame to have a graphic that links only to old posts. We'll get there, though. Glad you like it and glad James is making sure there is excellent current content.

I'm baaaaaaack

Richard Burr Really Is out of touch!

I say that a lot about CONservatives but it is so true in his case. He really has no clue as to the direction the State of North Carolina is going. It aints ya Grand Daddy's State anymore.

This State has moved into the 21 Century and Burr and his Cohorts are still living in the past!

True HallStyle

During the Jesse years, our state was much different than today. Today, we see a kind of "rainbow" involvement and we are seeing more and more people involved in the political process than we've ever seen before. Yes, I know that there have been problems with false voter registrations and so forth, but it does not take away from the fact that today, everyone in NC has a voice. We are no longer a state that can be counted on to go conservative even if it is democratic. The realization is that the landscape has changed for us and now we have a real opportunity to get the things done in our great state that should have been done long ago.

Thanks for your involvement.
