S-CHIP VETO OVERIDE on THURSDAY. Get on the Phone today.

On Thursday, Congress will attempt to override President Bush's veto of the S-CHIP veto. It looks like the Senate will have the votes to make this happen, but House is in doubt. It is crucial that you call your legislator to let them know just how important children's health care is to North Carolina. Let them know that it's more important to you than a tobacco tax. Let them know that they need to send a message to President Bush that Americans have had enough of his Business before People policies.

Do you need some background on what the S-CHIP program has meant to NC? I thought you might. More after the break.

This will be heavy on numbers and statistics, but every one of us can put faces with those statistics.

Please note - the numbers in the District columns will add up to more than the number in the state, because some counties are included in more than one district, and I could not find the numbers strictly for districts, so I did the math just for the districts. I used statistics found at Child Advocacy of NC. I have uploaded my original spreadsheet work to google documents and made it public. You can look at it here. One thing that stood out for me is that even though Etheridge voted NO to continuing S-CHIP, families in his district rely on it heavily. Phone calls need to be made on a daily basis to his office.

Here in the 6th district, we've been calling Coble's office. We've been told the old toad has no intention of changing his vote, but that hasn't stopped us from calling him. I will keep calling him until the vote hits the floor. Who knows? If he gets enough votes, he might see how important this is.

chart updated to reflect Brad Miller's actual vote. Sorry, Rep Miller!

MoveOn is holding vigils tonight to bring attention to this issue, and encourage an override of Bush's veto.

Just called BobE

I'm not one for pulling stunts on phone calls, given that you're just talking to some poor staffer, but I just called Bob Etheridge's Raleigh office to express my concern for the Representative. I told her how sorry I was for what must have been a terrible blow to the head with something heavy, given that he voted to support the President.

Of course, I didn't keep up that charade, and just told her I was disgusted with him for doing so.

Speaking of, what's up with Brad Miller voting no? Is it that he wanted the bigger bill? WIll he vote to override, at least?

I think the chart is wrong

I think the chart is wrong regarding Brad Miller. I think he voted YES on this. http://www.house.gov/bradmiller/SCHIP.htm

"Ultimately I supported this bill because it would provide health insurance to so many children who currently have no access to health care. However, I had serious concerns about the use of a federal tobacco tax to fund the program’s expansion."

Bob's Raleigh office

Lady on the phone says he hasn't made up his mind on the override vote, but she is clearly tired of receiving calls about this. she was ready to cut me off, and began arguing with me about whether the vote was or was not in support of health care for kids.

When I asked he to let me finish, I was greeted by rather surly silence, and a "well, thank you. do you care to leave your name."

I did. And if I lived in the district, I might just have cared to leave it at the State Board of Elections as well, along with a filing fee.

Coming around to County Conventions and excoriating the President is one thing. But it means little when you get a chance to oppose him and don't.

And Helms begat Reagan...

Arguably, Ronald Reagan's Helms enabled win in the 1976 NC primary was all the encouragement he needed to try again in 1980, setting the stage for the Reagan Revolution and synergistic escapades like this one...

TrueMeckDem on Myers Park Pat

"My opinion of Pat has changed over the years. I used to think he was truly a man of the people but the longer he has been mayor, the less I think of him.

As with most cities, Charlotte has three political parties: Dem, Rep, and Chamber of Commerce. Pat is definitely the puppet of the COC here. What is good for business is good for Charlotte and Pat ... very personable guy, he has gotten a bunch of Dems in these parts to vote for him but I don't trust him."
