Saturday Morning Open Thread - Laughing with Barack

H/t ghostlawns at Kos:

I stumbled on this while channel surfing last night.

It was quite hysterical, and made me want to know more about Rahm Emanuel.

Charlie Rose re-aired a segment on Rahm last night

He was interviewed along with his brothers with whom he is very close. It was fascinating.

I'm just posting a link for this video

I don't want to be Debbie Downer, 'cause that was a very funny video but there's this serious info on Rahm as well...and we can't afford to pretend anymore. Check it out if you want to know more about how Rahm Emanuel works...

No problem with this "info" on Rahm

I have zero problem with the report on the link you provided. None whatsoever.

Rahm Emmanual is a shrewd, shrewd choice, and it doesn't matter to me a whit what his personal agenda is or isn't. He's a hired gun, and a damned good shot, and the Democrats are long overdue hiring shrewd and effective. His job isn't to implement his vision -- but rather that of his President. That's what chiefs of staff do. Obama is calling the shots.

And frankly, I'm more comfortable with an administration that acknowledges and promotes teamwork by people of different persuasions. Please see Doris Kearn Goodwin's recent award winning book on Lincoln entitled *Team of Rivals.*

If you haven't read it, I strongly urge you to do so. It not only reinforces what a great man Lincoln was, but what a brilliant model he offered for subsequent administrations.

I'm glad you think that Bru'

I want to like Obama's choices and I think shrewd is a good quality as long as he doesn't tend to drag us further to the center.

Further to Center?

Good lord, we need to be dragged BACK to the center from the current position that is so far to the right of it.

Anyone occupying the White House should strive for the center. We were justifiably angry about how far to the Right Bush kept dragging us. I suspect Obama will piss off left wing idealogues (like you and me) often in the next few years.

But I'm definitely counting on him coming through for us on Supreme Court Appointments.

People, ya need to watch this

It really does a heart good to laugh after all the pre-election tension -- and given all the tension that isn't ever going to go away, given the challenges this country faces.

Back when Rahm was with the Clinton administration a guy I was dating loved to brag about how tight they were and how he got to go hob-nobbing at the White House, yaddy, yaddy, yaddy. I remember seeing a picture of Rahm and wondering what the possibilities were for converting this one relationship into another, but no dice, dagnabbit. Nevah even got CLOSE!!!

We interrupt this broadcast

I'm making an inaugural post from my new Jesusphone aka iPhone and I'm loving it. Blogging will not be the same again

Here is

what a director of Democrat.com has to say about Rham.

Rham

Rham is a good choice. Shrewed, strategic and he knows how to get it done. Personal sacrifice for him to abandon his own personal rise in the House. I looked forward, as he did, to a Speaker in the future of the Jewish faith. But I applaud his decision to put aside his own personal goals to secure success for President Obama.

I saw Rham at an event a few years ago and this is one smart man who can get things done.

Al Manning, retiree, native of eastern NC and proud of it, plenty of time to read, research and get annoyed about the lack of accountability in elected leaders these days. Married to a real southern lady and we live with two labs and two airedales who run

Just because

Rham can "get things done" does not make him good choice. Bush certainly was able to "get things done," and considering that Rham was one of the strongest advocates of the war in Iraq and admitted in 2006 that two more years of war would be a good thing because it would help the Democratic party in 2008 is pretty scary and makes me think that his ability to "get things done" might not be such a good thing.

-Independent

Only Libertarians can get things done correctly, no one else.

"You could say, 'Look, is this guy, Laden, really the bad guy that's depicted?' Most of us have never heard of him before." John McCain, following Clinton's strikes on al Qaeda camps

Jesus Swept ticked me off. Too short. I loved the characters and then POOF it was over.

Now he will follow President Obama's agenda

That is a good thing. Emanuel is exactly right for this job. President Obama needs a Chief of Staff who understands the politics of getting things done on the Hill, as well as someone who will support his agenda. Emanuel will do just that. If he does not, I have full confidence that President Obama will fire him.

As for what Emanuel said in 2006, until I see the context in which he said it, I'm not going to make judgments. He was the head of the DCCC in 2006, and his ability to get things done helped elect a Democratic majority in the House. That Democratic majority accomplished important priorities that had languished for 6 years because of the (R) stranglehold on all 3 branches of government. I work with child care providers, many of whom got a raise because the minimum wage was finally raised. It's still not a living wage, but it's better than it was. The Democrats are also the ones who support S-CHIP, (in NC, known as Health Choice), the children's health insurance program, which makes sure that children from low income families who do not qualify for Medicaid to access essential health care. I give Rahm Emanuel a lot of credit for helping to elect those Democrats.

By the way, this is the first time I've typed "President Obama". Damn, that feels good.

Boy did you strike out

Wrong on three counts.

1st. The fact that Rham can "get things done" does indeed make him a good choice. It's an essential skill.

2nd. No,Bush wasn't able to "get things done" if by "getting things done" we mean succeeding at any given goal. The only thing Bush succeeded in doing was naming Supreme Court Justices, but even there he couldn't "get done" his original choice. (Harriet Myers! Bwwhahahahahahaa!!) And sure, he dragged us into war, but I don't think war itself was the aim so much as a strategy, which he has failed to accomplish.

3rd. No, Rahm's admission (assuming it) that two more years of war would help the Democrats wasn't an evil observation. It was simply true. Bush was steering the ship, and he ran it onto the shoals. The Democrats rightly perceived that cutting off funding wouldn't necessarily stop the war, but it would definitely be political suicide, and the war would be prolonged that much longer by the next GOP administration. If you think for one minute that Bush wouldn't have kept the war going and then used the body count to blame the Democrats, you're even more naive than the average libertarian -- which is saying something.

So this hand-wringing about Rahm's rather astute observation is kinda sweet, but it's mostly idiotic.
