SCHIP veto override fails.

From NPR

"This is not about an issue. It's about a value," House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said just before the vote. "For the cost of less than 40 days in Iraq, we can provide SCHIP coverage for 10 million children for one year." emphasis mine --lc

So here's the deal folks - if we bring the troops home 40 days early, we can provide health care coverage for 10 million children for a year. If we bring them home 120 days early, then we can give them 3 years of coverage.

Where are our priorities?

I think the real question is what are the Republican priorities. They have lied and twisted every aspect of this legislation to fit their delusional view about what's really needed. They have taken a bill that gives states the opportunity to set their own standards to match their unique needs, and lambasted it with a one-size-fits-all Replicant sledge hammer.

The only good news in this is that some of the a$$holes representing North Carolina in Congress will soon be out of a job.

Every Repub from NC voted no

I just looked at the roll call. Every single Repub from NC voted to sustain the veto.

Looks like I have two donations to make this weekend ... one to Larry Kissell and another to Marshall Adame.

This vote needs to be hung around

the necks of every rep who voted to uphold W.'s veto. This is an absolutely disgusting display of national "priorities". For 40 days worth of Iraq we could have given children healthcare who currently lack it.

If I read the BCBS rate page correctly a family of four with parents around 40 years old would pay 800+ dollars a month or like $9,000.00 a year - that is15% of the income mentioned as the max in the SCHIP bill. Nine grand is a lot of money if your income is $61,000, but that's the thing Republicons don't get.

Person County Democrats

And that 's pre-tax income

So after you pay your taxes, etc. that 61,000 looks a lot more like $50,000. Which sounds like a lot of money, until you try to actually care for a family on it.

I guess we know how much families are actually valued.

Republicans & some Democrats have just defined the 2008 election

Republicans and some Democrats want more war, more spying on Americans, more torture and are fine with leaving uip to ten million children and pregnant women without medical coverage.

Democrats (most) want the return of our constitutional government, civil rights, an end to the Iraq war, Hospital care for all Americans, border security, congressional oversight for Intelligence agencies, an end to torture and the closing of Guantamino Bay.....for starters.

We will overcome. Good will prevail. It always has...and always will.

Thank you ICloud....

I just read the report.

And let me remind you that our Congressman Mike McIntyre

who voted against S-CHIP originally ( just as he voted to condone torture and gutting habeas corpus) will now claim he voted for S-Chip...just like he now claims to have voted against torture. etc., which, like SCHIP, was in a later vote that also failed.

Opportunist...triangulating...obfuscatory...disingenuous...McIntyre!!

SE NC Dems

He knew it was safe.

He knew he could appease his constituents by voting this way now, because he knew it wouldn't pass. Weasel.

Same goes for Etheridge -which hurts me to say, because he was a personal friend of my Dad's. For once I'm glad Dad isn't here to see how some of his political "good guys" have turned to buttheads.

TrueMeckDem on Myers Park Pat

"My opinion of Pat has changed over the years. I used to think he was truly a man of the people but the longer he has been mayor, the less I think of him.

As with most cities, Charlotte has three political parties: Dem, Rep, and Chamber of Commerce. Pat is definitely the puppet of the COC here. What is good for business is good for Charlotte and Pat ... very personable guy, he has gotten a bunch of Dems in these parts to vote for him but I don't trust him."
