SCHIP Wall of Shame: Sue Myrick, (R) NC-09

Families USA has erected a “Wall of Shame” on their website, and my opponent, Rep. Sue Myrick, (R), NC-09, has earned her place by voting NO to expand kids health care coverage, and NO to override Bush’s veto of this bill.

There’s more at Families USA

You can find Myrick in the third column on the wall of shame, and I’m embarrassed that she represents me in Congress!
But Rep. Myrick insists she was for SCHIP before she was against it:

Rep. Sue Myrick (R-N.C.), Charlotte Observer: When SCHIP began in 1997, "I supported it," and "I still support" it, but this bill "has lost its focus" because it "opens up avenues for wealthier families and adults to be covered," this "particular bill was not considered by any committee in Congress, and ... it promotes too much government involvement in family health care decisions."(Myrick, Charlotte Observer, 10/11).

Really?
Well the Charlotte Observer’s Fannie Flono disagrees regarding which families would be covered:

As for the idea that, as President Bush avowed, "a program that was meant to help poor children was being turned into one for middle income children whose family incomes were up to $83,000" -- not true. Most of the children covered -- 70 percent -- by the expanded bill would be in families making less than $40,000 a year. Most of the rest would be in families making less than $62,000.

What about promoting too much government in family health decisions?

Dan Gerlach, senior fiscal policy adviser to Gov. Easley says the state will muddle through with the extension but will face a unhappy choice without more money for the future. "We'll either have to cut kids off the program or state taxpayers will pay."
North Carolina is not the only state to face that dilemma. At least 12 others are in the same boat. Complicating matters is the rising cost of health care, and the decline in employers providing insurance, particularly in North Carolina, a new study shows.
"This is not a problem that's going away," Gerlach said. The expansion bill would have been "excellent" for North Carolina because it would have allowed the state to finally cover all the children eligible, he said.

It seems to me (and Flono) that families without access to healthcare would welcome that opportunity for government help vs. the alternative risk to their kids' health and/or potential for financial crisis if a medical emergency occurs.
It’s time that we begin addressing the serious health care crisis in this country now! We must start by protecting and nurturing our country’s future by expanding SCHIP.

The Charlotte Observer Editorial Board urged Rep Myrick to reconsider:

SCHIP has "made remarkable inroads" in efforts to reduce the number of uninsured children, the editorial states, adding, "It's hardly surprising then that in a nationwide poll, 91% of Americans said they want Congress to help states cover more uninsured children." According to the editorial, lawmakers who voted against the legislation "should reconsider and help override" Bush's veto (Charlotte Observer, 10/4).

Rep. Myrick won’t break from the Bush fold and vote to help kids, which is one of the many reasons why I’m running for her seat. I will work hard to make sure that no child is left behind without access to medical care, no family will face bankruptcy or financial ruin because of a medical crisis. I’ll work hard to refocus our resources on America’s needs at home, paying special attention to our health care crisis.

Together we can do this.
Cheers,
Harry

Myrick

There are so many walls of shame that Ms. Myrick should be on.

I hope someone in Charlotte can start beating the drum statewide about Myrick's many shortcomings, a status she shares with every other Republican Congress person in North Carolina.

People who got elected by promising they'd term-limit themselves. They lied. And every time they stand for election, they are rubbing their lies into the wounds their party has created all across this country.

Tie them all together. They are individually intolerable, but as a group they are absolutely destructive.

Shameful

So much for compassionate conservatism! Myrick has voted against kids health 3 times in lockstep with George Bush.
Pathetic....

Yes...sadly it's so...

...she's there to "carry Bush's water" as the always brilliant Rush Limbaugh would say. A thoughtful leader is she!

myrick

How can she continue to keep in lockstep with Bush and not support the children on NC. It is clear if she is reelected (horrors) she will be against health care for all. Go! Harry Go!

Give us an update on the campaign?

How's it going? Are you enjoying the lull before the storm?

Yes, there is still a primary.

We will have a couple of primaries here in Mecklenburg. Besides the 9th there is also one in the 8th.

Well, you know I know that ;-)

I wasn't in Iowa that long.

1 Thessalonians 5:21: But examine everything carefully; hold fast to that which is good.

Shameful indeed.

Back when Bush was merrily vetoing S-CHIP as if children don't matter to him (they don't), I did some research on our Congressional delegation from NC. For what it's worth, between 2000 and 2004, enrollment of children ages birth through 18 in HealthChoice, which is NC's S-CHIP program in counties represented by Sue Myrick increased from 6853 to 20,355. I'm not much with math, but fortunately there are spreadsheet programs. That represents a 197% increase in enrollment in 4 years -- the highest in the state. (Please note, these numbers are based on the counties included in the District, not just the Congressional District.)

To me, those numbers indicate a tremendous need for Health Choice in the 9th District. My question to Mrs. Myrick would be what she plans on doing to assist the at least 21,000 children in her district alone that are in need of this program.

I published my spreadsheet on Google documents after the first S-CHIP vote. I haven't updated it since October, so the representatives' voting information may have changed. However, the numbers are still the latest available at the county level.

I got the information from the CLIKS database, which you can access at Action for Children, thanks to the Annie E. Casey foundation. Information is power. Use it.

Harry Taylor, go after Sue Myrick and don't let go. She needs to be gone.

Be the change you wish to see in the world. --Gandhi

Thank you so much!!!!!!!!!

I so appreciate this sort of help, and it is immensely valuable! Yes, she needs to wrap it up! Cheers. Harry

Very good write up Linda...

I have learned alot from your comments and references.

The S-CHIP issue has served to expose where the hearts of our representatives really are.

Right wing and Corporate interest have exercised enourmous pressure in Congress about S-CHIP. The moral and representative conscience of those voting against our children while allocating Billions for War is evident and should send us all a signal. We need to take Washington back for the "People" and for the sake of our children and the generations following them.

I've gotten the signal, Marshall...

...as have you. Yes we need to take OUR country back and rid ourselves of all these hijackers! I'm greatful for anything are able to do to help. We needs lots of money to beat her, so if you'll tell 10 people...who will tell 10 people...who will tell 10 people... You get my drift, I know. Thanks. Harry
