So, Should I Move to NC-08? Or: What Would You Do for Larry?

Well, everyone heard Larry's call this morning, and while it seems unlikely that the election in NC-08 will be as close as it was last time, I am nonetheless considering moving to Charlotte after college (to teach or do politics - it's definitely a seperate decision). Is it worth it for me to move to NC-08 as opposed to somewhere else in Charlotte? ;) Maybe I'm not going to go that extreme for Larry, but it's definitely exciting to see this much energy this early on. And I'd like very much to contribute to that energy again.

Now, I've been thinking about what we could do this early on (aside from moving), and I've been thinking of different kinds of fundraisers - one idea is to raise enough money ($5000) to make Larry the first candidate sponsor of YearlyKos, an investment that I think would create dividends in Democratic donors. I would love to see a bunch of people from the BlueNC gang (and any other NC blogas) come together to have a netroots party to support two things (YearlyKos and Larry) that the vast majority of us believe in. Who would be up for such a gathering?

Also, I've been trying to put together something during Speedweeks in late May; is there anyone who will be in Charlotte/Concord for the race (or who is willing to make the drive)? I'd really like to do an event before the end of May, and any ideas would be greatly appriciated. We're gonna get Robin this time - and it's going to be by more than 329 votes.

First, find a job that pays the bills...oh and that you looooove

and move to be close to the job. If you don't have to worry about paying bills, then move somewhere that you think you would enjoy living for a while within the 8th. Why not?

If Markos, David, Chris, etc use the same criteria in selecting netroots candidates, Larry will not be eligible for the Netroots endorsement. They will not endorse top-tier candidates. Some candidates they endorsed early on wound up becoming top-tier, but they were pretty clear about this in the nominating rules. If Larry has an abundance of money, I don't see a problem with his being a sponsor of YearlyKos, however, he shouldn't count on getting his money back in contributions. I don't know if Brad Miller was a sponsor, but he was endorsed as a friend of the netroots and I'm not sure he broke $1000 from the netroots.

If Larry is going to spread the financial love to the Netroots, I think he should keep it local. Yes, the Dem establishment does not do much to support progressive bloggers financially and yes, YearlyKos is a worthy endeavor, but we are building our own network here in NC and it is probably in Larry's best interest to help there if he is so inclined.

Now, all that aside....I think many contributors from MyDD and DailyKos will probably give to Larry and we should certainly push that as early and as often as we can to build the war chest.

Well, that's why we'd raise the money to be a YearlyKos sponsor

Because I'm sure local bloggers would feel good about having a two-fold purpose for the money. Now while we'll easily break $5000 in netroots fundraising, even without the official endorsement, we may not get exactly $5000 back from being a sponsor. But I think we may get many motivated people to take a more active interest in the campaign in a cycle where the news, job market, and fundraising is dominated by the presidential campaign. My dream is getting SEIU, the NEA, and some other PACs giving us a few more Dans this time around. Myrick is already having a top-dollar fundraiser with the House Minority Leader, and while we aren't running against her, I'm sure Robin isn't far behind.

Also, I think that Larry will still be a netroots candidate

Especially if there is another primary ...

Larry is already on the netroots list...

I doubt they will take him OFF the list. We will need a good network to keep Larry in the rec'd list at Daily Kos and MYDD.

I live about 20 miles from the 8th district

and could move, but won't.

I will support Larry financially, to the best of my ability - he's a terrific candidiate, and I'm confident that he will win this time. I'm hoping - wishing on every star- that such a candidate will emerge for NC06 that will keep me too busy putting Howard Coble out of office. If that does not materialize, I will spend weekends in Montgomery county, pounding pavement for Larry. Best I can do.

Yeah...but Sam's just getting out of college

He HAS to move.

I have you beat. I live about a mile from the 8th. We're moving, but it's to the 10th. DQ and I will start hounding McHenry. She'll have her camera ready and I'll be there to enjoy the show. :)

Don't tell them my secret!

Maybe I'll ask Trish Cotham to hire me at East Meck.

I'll do my best to work on that
