So This Is A Democracy?
I did not appear at the YDNC convention and I want you to know why. It has to do with one important board member, but before I get to that... I do want to say I love the YDNC and the YDA. I have been an active member of this organization for years now. I helped throw last years convention in Guilford county, along with Jason Coley and Tony McEwen. I have been told it was the largest YDNC convention in state history. I have taken days off of work to go to the legislature and fight with my brothers and sisters for the Same Day Registration and Voting bill and the Sudanese Divestment bill. I have been in the trenches with this organization. I will continue to be in the trenches.
I love this organization. What it stands for is something special. Only the experience of being part of this organization can fully explain it. The YD's are the ground workers that make campaigns run. They are the activists of the party. The energy and spirit that YD's bring to the table is like no other. I love being part of that spirit and energy.
As you all know I decided to run for US Congress in NC-06 this year, which made me a candidate by definition. I am still an active YD, but I am now a candidate. My involvement with, love and respect for the people in the YDNC only made the following circumstances harder to swallow.
The story starts back in November of last year. Zack Hawkins, President of the YDNC, called and asked Casey Mann (who is an integral consultant on my campaign as well as my girlfriend) to put together his YDNC Board of Trustees event. Casey asked if she could spend time away from the campaign to do it. We all came to agreement with Zack introducing me as a candidate from the mic when he announced the other candidates and officials. Let me say the event was a huge success, outdrawing the NCDP event that had 3 Congressmen at it. It was the hot ticket. Casey threw an event like only she could. Again, Zack's end of the deal was to simply make mention of me when he made mention of everyone else. So Zack introduces all the current representatives, mind you pointing over me while doing it. He introduces candidates running, pointing over my head while doing it. Then he put down the mic. He says he forgot. I find it hard to believe you can forget someone you are looking directly at and pointing over while doing it. After talking with Zack, I moved past the occurrence and accepted his apology.
YDNC Convention planning started in January and again the call for Casey comes. Again, as I had moved past the prior event, I was told I would speak at the convention, Casey went to help plan the convention. Everybody wins, right? Then a few weeks go by and it turned out to be I don't know if you are speaking at the convention. Now, I didn't want to give a stump speech. These are my people. They know me and what I stand for. I wanted to tell everyone what the YDNC meant to me and how it helped propel me to where I am today. That anyone sitting in the room could run for office. So, we fought and fought and fought. Casey almost walked from the convention, and once that was clear I was slotted in two places to speak. All Casey has ever asked for was for my name to be mentioned in everything that went out like the other candidates and speakers. It didn't need to prominent. I just needed to be there. Everyone else who is speaking was mentioned every time. I was promised time and time again by Zack that would be the case. So the schedule goes up on the YDNC site, a Facebook message is sent, a Facebook event is created and a newsletter goes out, none of which include me. We are told, oops my bad. We are told it will be fixed. Another schedule is shot out to everyone and again no mention.
So you see where I am going with this. Everything that has come out of Zack Hawkins mouth has been utter bullshit. At what point do I finally stop giving chances to make it up to me? How many times should I be snubbed before it is too many?
I was then slated to speak after John Edwards as Zack sent out a Facebook update, my name misspelled. No correction issued. I will be the first to stand up and say that I misspell words from time to time. I also issue corrections as soon as it is brought to my attention. It was brought to his attention immediately after it went out. There has been no updated schedule on the website, Facebook events page, no e-mail to the group, all things I was told would be done to make up for how I had been treated.
So was I to believe that I am actually speaking at the YDNC Convention? How can I believe anything that comes out of Zack's mouth. I seem to be the only person who has been left off of any schedule. I also know that if he had done what he has done with me to any other politician, they would not take it either.
In one of the last fights that Zack had with Casey over this ongoing snub, Zack threatened that if we didn't fall in line he was going to call Gov Hunt about the situation and badmouth both Casey and I. Neither of us had done anything wrong, unless you count fighting for a hair of respect. Well call Zack. If that is what you want to do. I believe Congressman Brad Miller said it best at last years convention after I introduced him: “Jay is a good friend, and I want to keep him a friend because I have seen what he does to his enemies.” I urge you to do whatever it is you think you are going to do. Just know there are consequences.
Everyone else on the board has fought for me to be at the convention, until I had called each personally, they had no idea how I was being treated. So there is a decision to make. To go or not to go? After heated discussions within my campaign staff, I had actually decided to go give my speech, because they wanted me to. Most had no idea what I had been through up to this point and I didn't want to let them down.
Jump now to Wednesday night before convention. It is 11ish at night and we both get a text from Zack. He was asking if we were attending the Governors Mansion on Thursday night. I replied “Nope”. A little short on my behalf, but I was already in bed exhausted. A few minutes later he comes back with, “So I take it that you are declining the invite to speak after Sen. John Edwards?” He pulls back immediately after with a little less snippy a message. I replied that I would speak and it was I will be attending. I also asked him to keep it to business hours as the time was getting a little late. His reply, “In campaigns 11pm is business hours. See you Saturday.” This argument went on until after midnight. Where I decided that this has been a microcosm of how Casey and I had been treated and I would not go and speak. Casey also decided at this point that she would not attend either and she is the Convention Administrator.
I am a man of principals. I believe in treating others as I would want to be treated. I always live up to that standard. I also believe in showing due respect to others. What would it say to the people of the 6th District if I was to lay down and take it? If I won't fight for my own principals, how could I fight for their principals? I can assure you that the people of the 6th District will never have to question my principals, and how I will stand and fight for theirs.
To treat another as you have treated me would be wrong. Taking into account that I am a YD, doing this to one of your own is deplorable. I don't know if what you are doing is on purpose. You say it is not. That leaves only one explanation, incompetence and incompetence must be held accountable. We want to hold the Bush Administration accountable. The same rules apply here.
A few more housekeeping issues to deal with. First, the fact that every convention to date has gone through a bidding process. I had to bid last year, Mecklenberg the year before. This convention is being held in Zack's home county and there was never a bidding process for other counties to have a chance. That is so he won't lose his election. So no one will run against him. Second, a friend of my campaign, and of both Casey and I, had paid in full to go to this convention. She arrived to find her name purged from the voter rolls, told to bring her receipt to prove she had paid. Also removed from the voter roll were Casey and myself. Last, two YD's were to run for the to be vacant Treasurer's seat. One was Zack's friend, one was not. Zack's buddy did not show at the convention and a sitting President, Zack, read his speech to the crowd. The other guy won. As it was told to me, the newly elected Treasurer went to shake Zack's hand and Zack refused to shake his hand and was dismissive. Two things wrong here, the obvious being the reaction show towards the new board member and the not so obvious being that under the Rules of Organization, board members have to remain neutral in elections. Reading a speech for someone not present and running, as a sitting President, is a gross infringement of these rules.
As I see it, “no-bid” contracts, the purging of voter rolls and the illegal attempt at electing a crony seem like plays out the Republican play book. Add to it the above threat and attempt at intimidation and you have the Republican party play book.
There is so much more I could go into and I will at some point. I think you get the point for now.
I love the YDNC and I can not stand and watch the leader of this organization run it into the ground. I refuse to ignore my principals and speak just because it will help my campaign. I hate not speaking to those whom I love so dearly. It pains me greatly. Speaking after John Edwards would surly be a moment to remember, as he has been inspiration for me being involved in politics. I am giving that up for my principals. I am sure my true friends in the organization will understand. I do know that unorganized, unfair, not reliable and untrustworthy are not characteristics I want to see running any organization. Well maybe the Republican party, but that is a whole other story.
What I did do was send current Guilford County YD President, my successor, Malcolm Kenton, to read a statement for me. Mind you, no matter what Malcolm might think of the situation, he was reading my words, not his.
The following was the speech he gave:
I am speaking on the behalf of Jay Ovittore, Candidate for NC's 6th Congressional District. Jay will not be speaking today and it pains him greatly, but he wanted me to deliver the following remarks:
Hello brothers and sisters of the YDNC. It should be known that I love this organization. I love what it stands for and the people in it. A series of circumstances has occurred that will prevent me from speaking to you today. I will address that later. What I would have talked about today is how the YDNC and my active involvement in this organization has propelled me, a blue-collar painting contractor, to run for US Congress against a 24 year entrenched Republican. I would talk about the friendships and political partnerships that have grown from my involvement. That through this organization, I have grown as a person and have experienced the things that made me want to run for elected office. I would talk about the fact is, you can too. Any person in this room has the ability to run for office if they so choose. It does take quite a bit of work. Trust me, it is worth it to fight for what you believe in.
I have spoken with everyone on the board that I know supports me. Zeb Smathers, Kara Hollingsworth, Ty Stumpf, Dan Spuller and Melissa Price. I love and respect each of them, and the members sitting in this room today.
I am a man of principle. The circumstances of the last several months has made me stay home today. It would have been a great honor to speak after Sen Edwards. He gave the hope and inspiration to believe the system wasn't too broken to be fixed. I am willing to give that up though. To stand firm for what I believe is right. What would it say the constituents in the 6th District if I was to go against my own principles to speak today to further myself? It would tell them that I would fold to pressure from special interest lobbyists when it came to important matters and that is not the case.
I am a YD and I am running for Congress. This can be you and it will. Together we can change.
Please accept my apologies for not being here today to speak in person. It hurts me not to be at this convention. Especially after the one I threw last year with the help of Jason Coley and Tony McEwen. As far as the circumstances go, I will not go into them today. You will have a chance to read about it Monday at www.bluenc.com. Thank you in advance for your understanding and thank you for your time.
Malcolm was about halfway through and asked to stop. He didn't.
All I ever asked for was a little respect and to be treated like Zack would treat say, Congressman Miller, Gov Hunt, or any other in office or running. He surely wouldn't be calling at such late hours and he surely wouldn't be treating others in my position, a candidate, like he has treated me. If he did, I am sure the reaction would be similar. I have given Zack opportunity after opportunity to treat me like he would want to be treated and he has failed time and time again.
Whether I was right or wrong in not speaking and sending a surrogate will be debatable to those uninvolved. To me and those around me, it was the right thing to do. Acting in a way in which you feel is right is not always the easiest path or path of least resistance, but it is the only path that leads to a good nights sleep. Reading this you might feel this is all petty. Some maybe, but the whole of it is unacceptable and I feel in the end, I made the right decision. I also felt strong enough about this situation to tell an insiders story to those who wouldn't otherwise hear it.
I hope the YDNC does well in the coming years. I hope it continues to be a force in Democratic politics. I wish the YDNC well and will be there if and when you call on me. Time will tell. I sure hope so.

The Last Thing I Ever Want...
The last thing I ever want is to disappoint anyone. Even after I had decided not attend the convention, I still had them in my heart. When I received a phone call that the booklet for the convention may not be printed as there was an issue with the printer, I called the printer and pushed to ensure they received it in time. I lined up a backup willing to complete it in a day in case the first one fell through. When I was received word from James Carville's office that if Zack remained unresponsive, he would not be attending, I called Carville's office to ensure he would come and no YD would be let down. I'm the one in the background making sure things run as they should. I'm used to being used and abused by my party and generally find solace in a job well done. I am an activist. I fight the good fight. Accolades mean little to me as they almost never come. It's not really the point. However, I couldn't do it this time.
I spent the weekend in tears; torn between the thought of letting down all those I care about and being pushed to the point of reconsidering my involvement in politics. I bleed passion into everything I've been asked to do, never once asking for anything in return. The irony of this weekend, is that I was given the first award I have ever received and I wasn't there to receive it....an award, by the way, that was missing when my friend went to retrieve it for me. I later heard a janitor found it in a box of trash. I hold no ill will with the YDNC. They inspire me. My hard work for them is with the same motivation that spurns me to hire interns on every campaign. They are our future. They are not marred and jaded by this game yet. They are my hope for what can be.
This is why I am so disheartened by this situation. I may be one of few who will speak out, but I am not alone. Many conversations of support were had with many others all weekend who not only understood my reasons, but had many of their own issues as well. There were not only YDs, but vendors I had brought in to help Zack. Vendors that found bills unpaid, tickets unfulfilled, promises broken. I feel responsible. These are people who have helped me over the years, at the shortest of notice, as the biggest of favors and for them I have no answers. I am sorry.
It was not just the lies that were told to me and the broken promises, but the level of disrespect and disregard in which I was treated. I am a strong woman and I was made to feel small. I thought we all had a common goal? Shouldn't this be about making a change for the better instead of furthering personal interests? That is why I back the candidates that I do; because I have faith in them. I saw first hand the internal struggle that Jay had, balancing his love for the YDNC, it's members who he didn't want to let down, and personal principals which make him the candidate that he is. It was awful to see him go through. It got to a point where I was filled with dread every time the convention would be brought up. With the amount of love I have for this organization, it should have never come to this.
Sadly, I find this situation indicative of bigger issues within my party. I fear a rift on the horizon. I sense an inevitable split between those of us who stand behind issues and ideals and those who stand for power and strengthening the party and their position in it. It is the same battle being fought in many races across this state and the country. I find there are those who stand on the right side of issues and are not swayed by pressure. Unfortunately, rarely are they party candidates. Meaning, they are not the candidates that the party props up to be their puppets upon their election that they have paid for. Maybe I'm just a rebel and fear any establishment gaining to much influence. As Jefferson said, “A little rebellion now and then...is a medicine necessary for the sound health of government.” I suppose those of us who will never accept the status quo must remain vigilant, but we must also remain true to ourselves at the same time. We all have limits. We all have feelings.
It's the sad reality of politics I think.
There is a party machine in North Carolina and they want what they want, damn the torpedos. But, considering there isn't a rock-star candidate, this seems almost like a personal snub. We know in the case of Jim Neal that the "powers-that-be" have decided he isn't an appropriate candidate. I just can't see why anyone would feel that way about your campaign, considering the alternative candidates.
This is your side and Zack is more than welcome to come and discuss his side of this story.
One of the pitfalls of childhood is that one doesn't have to understand something to feel it. - Carlos Ruiz Zafon
Mr. Hawkins shouldn't have to respond...
to these petty accusations. This isn't the kind of discussion that needs to occur on BlueNC. Mr. Ottivore should be ashamed of this post.
Let's recap: someone forgot to recognize Mr. Ottivore at an event, his name was misspelled on something, and he got a speaking role at the YDNC convention after Senator Edwards (even though Mr. Ottivore has little experience with the YDs or the Democratic Party from what I can tell). Did I miss something?
This part of your post is inaccurate imo
Jay has been active with YD's and the party in general. I first met Jay at a 13th district convention a couple years ago.
This episode is disappointing and could have been handled better by all concerned parties.
Person County Democrats
i guess it depends on your perspective
While he has been active recently, I would suggest that only a few years participating in party affairs isn't a very long time. But my point really was that he ended up with a pretty good spot on a program that included James Carville, John Edwards, etc. He should have taken advantage of that.
Taking advantage
of a situation which is morally wrong to further one's career? Are those the ethics you want in a candidate?
I would suggest Zack does respond.
I wish this hadn't shown up at BlueNC because I can see where it is going. But, I think we need to know whether or not he is being snubbed/excluded or whether as scharrison says below "there is a pattern here".
One of the pitfalls of childhood is that one doesn't have to understand something to feel it. - Carlos Ruiz Zafon
Agreed.
This really should be resolved offline.
I will limit my comments to this brief statement
I know Zack well; he is a quality individual who works hard, does what is right, and has strengthened both YDNC and the Democratic Party in general. I respect Zack greatly and find him both professional and personable. A man with as much decency as Zack shouldn't have to defend himself from hearsay and perceived slights. Instead, Zack should continue to fight for a blue NC; I, for one, look forward to working with him to make this happen.
Ovittore not Ottivore
I misspelled Mr. Ovittore's name by accident. Really.

Just remember what I said about County Convention day. Come to Moore last, and the beer is on me, my friends. No bs.

Jay, since we're saying exactly what's on our minds,
let me say this: Between the near-fight that occurred after the debate the other night and this apparently long-lasting and serious personality conflict (both of which were aired here), I'm starting to wonder if your aggressive nature goes beyond independent/outspoken and into the realm of combativeness.
In both cases you made what I can only classify as schoolyard bully comments; last time it was something about the way your father would have won the fistfight but he didn't want to spoil your campaign, and then you drop this into today's thread:
Frankly, some people might be impressed by that attitude and consider it "scrappy", but I'm not. I expect a hell of a lot more maturity out of someone running for Congress, and I stopped being impressed by stuff like that somewhere between 8-10 grades.
Agreed.
I agree with scharrison.
I acknowledge, based on both situations you've presented, Jay, that you have a legitimate grievances. However, my concern is the tact you've used in addressing these grievances--it's been, to say the least, rather disconcerting.

There are people in every time and every land who want to stop history in its tracks. They fear the future, mistrust the present, and invoke the security of the comfortable past which, in fact, never existed. - Robert F. Kennedy
Maturity is something the YDs should strive for now.
The great job done by them in the past can't be disregarded and there will always be problems to get past. Finding a way to heal from this situation may take some time but it should be firmly on the agenda. Don't let it go long without taking those steps.
yes
the lack of maturity clearly rests with Mr. Ottivore here.
With all due respect
I was in the hallway after the debate, (Jay was not) and Jay's father and some of our supporters were standing on the other side of the lobby. Bratton's husband walked toward us. We were discussing where to go eat. I'm not sure how that can be viewed as confrontational. In addition, Jay's father is not the only one he rolled up on after the debate. However, as I had to step in between the two men, I believe I can offer some insight into the situation.
The man stepped into Lou's face, Lou stepped back, then the Bratton's husband stepped in again, then he bumped Lou's chest. That is when I went in to push her husband off of Jay's dad. Perhaps you are misinterpreting frustration as instigation.
I have worked in politics a long time. These are not isolated incidents. I've seen this and worse on many campaigns. I think that its only now is someone willing to talk about it. The frustration is building. More and more good honest folks are losing their faith in the process and until someone stands up for decency, things will only continue to decline.
I hope I'm wrong Casey,
but I've been around for awhile. I may have very little campaign experience, but I've got about a quarter of a century's worth of personnel management under my belt, and I've resolved so many (personal) conflicts I've lost count.
There are some folks who always seem to be in the middle of some kind of conflict, but also have a righteous explanation for each one. Eventually you have to step back and look at everything and say, "There is a pattern here."
I'm not saying (yet) that Jay is one of those, but I've seen a few things recently that have me concerned.
Would you have preferred
someone to suffer indignation in silence?
That's the problem we have now. I don't understand why standing up for yourself it being viewed as immature and combative.
Are war activists immature? I'd say not. They are standing for their ideals. They see injustice and speak up against it. How does that change when we see injustice here?
Um.
I appreciate that you feel passionate about this, but really, let's not get hyperbolic.

hi Casey
I want to say that I understand the indignation, and am sorry, terribly sorry for both you and Jay that this problem has arisen.
I think your passion is admirable, and hope you will never lose it. As for the anger, sometimes it can be used to good purpose, but dang is it ever hard to manage that way.
I know about it -- in fact I would guess that quite a number of regular contributors here are of a passionate nature and can empathize with strength of feeling for better and for worse.
When you see someone you care about being insulted or otherwise hurt, the feeling is very much one of righteous indignation. But as much as it burns, it really isn't quite comparable to the zeal that spurs us to political activism, and is more usefully kept in a separate place internally. Actually, it's better not to keep it at all, but that's a tall order and I haven't figured out how to manage that myself (as folks here might attest).
Jay is smart, young, idealistic and has much to offer -- and he's especially fortunate to have someone like you fighting alongside him.
My best wishes to both of you for moving onward and upward and past this episode.

Thank you
for your words of understanding and encouragement. It is warming as I'm new to this great wonderful community of blogging, (though I've been reading them for quite some time). I will always say whats on my mind, for better or for worse. Someone, (can't remember who), once said to never apologize for showing feeling. When you do so, you apologize for truth.
It is my belief, as always, that tomorrow will be better than today. Perhaps I'm an idealist....
Thanks, again.
I don't mean to parse your words,
but indignation is an emotional reaction to a perceived insult. Read that again.
If there was no intent by the other party to insult, becoming upset and counterattacking makes the individual seem paranoid and overly sensitive. If there was an intent to insult, becoming upset and counterattacking may be exactly what your antagonist is trying to achieve.
What do those two have in common? The getting upset part being a mistake. Now, I will freely admit that avoiding this reaction is tough as hell and is not a "common" trait amongst the general populace. But it should be a common trait amongst elected officials.
You did mean to parse her words.
It's time to let this be. Let Ms. Mann and Mr. Ovitorre work it out with Mr. Hawkins offline, as is appropriate, and not further play it out online.
Let it be.

No. Please don't. Regardless of whether you have indeed been slighted or not, this public airing of your personal rift with Mr. Hawkins suggests that you are not ready for Congress or any other public office.
