Support the Yadkin Study Commission: Action item

For the last 50 years Alcoa has had the opportunity to operate the power plant on the Yadkin river and has also had the chance to demonstrate their willingness to be a good neighbor and corporate citizen - but instead they have taken the resources that rightfully belong to the people of NC and have used it for their own profit, without good stewardship of the land or the economy. Where are the jobs that they promised? Why haven't they cleaned up the environmental nightmare that they have left for the people of North Carolina because of their smeltering operations? Why do we allow them to use our water so that they can generate electricity that they sell to others and keep all the profit? It makes no sense.

Alcoa answers only to Alcoa - unlike Duke or Progress which must work with the State. We do need to study this issue - and what will studying it hurt? The study still allows Alcoa to continue to operate the hydro-electric project and continue to reap huge amounts of money from the Yadkin without any benefit to us - the citizens of NC. We are only going to get this one opportunity to look at this important issue ---- for the next 50 years. Frankly, we owe it to our kids and grandkids to take a good hard look at this. The State of North Carolina would be negligent if the do not, at a minimum, weigh in on this before the feds grant a 50 year license.

There is only a very short window for our voices to count. There will be a critical hearing on the legislation before the House Judiciary I Committee on Thursday, July 10, 2008, at 10am – That is only 3 days away! We are all busy and working so if you can’t attend --- call and email the members of the House Judiciary Committee Members and urge them to support the Yadkin Study Commission. We need to do this now --- before it is too late. Here is their information:

Please take ten minutes to do this.

Mthomas has made it easy as pie. It takes only ten minutes to send something to each member. And you needn't write a dissertation:

Dear Representative ________:

While there are many occasions where speed is of the essence, determining the fate of one of North Carolina's rivers is not one of them. I hope you will support the Yadkin River Study Commission so we can have an honest and fact-based discussion of the merits of managing that precious resource. Thank you.

Just heard back from Deborah Ross

They'll be looking at this closely.

Please write NOW.

Please?

Great post.

Thanks for bringing this to our attention.
