Surreal Netroots Nation moment starring Bob Barr
I come out of a session at Netroots Nation and guess who is standing in the hall being interviewed -- Libertarian candidate Bob Barr. It's bizarre enough that he'd show up at a lefty conference, but the mind-boggler is that he's also in Austin to speak at the sad-sack right-wing blogger "counter-event," the Right Online Summit (sponsored by the Americans for Prosperity Foundation, just look at the agenda and the speaker list), along with the diva of wingnuttery, Michelle Malkin. Here's Bob, and my reaction:

My NN Hot Topic panel was recorded; none of the panelists knew what current events were going to be discussed, so we didn't have any prep time -- terrifying. Here's a link to the video.

Had lunch next to Brad Miller
Rep. Miller gave what I heard was a great presentation on the sub-prime mortgage crisis that I missed, but I'm going to catch the session -- it was recorded here:

BTW, thanks for the apple from your box lunch, Congressman. :)

Pam, just had to front-page this for the picture
That's priceless. Love the expression. You can use this thread for any other updates. I wish I could be there. I'm sure it has been a great experience.

Vote Democratic, the ass you save may be your own.
Top 10 All Time
Certainly one of the 10 best "WTF?" expressions of all time.
But it makes sense for Bob Barr to try. His current positions on gay marriage, the war,
and the Patriot Act are all closer to those of the left.
The question, for many folks (including Pam, by her expression) is whether Bob's "current" position is credible
and genuine.
I guess Bob Barr, to his credit, read the LP platform, and is taking it seriously, on those points at least.
Michelle Malkin? Really? Yikes.

Also spotted at NN...
The impossibly handsome and very tall (ok, I'm a hobbit so everyone seems tall to me) San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom (below), who was there to introduce a speaker the next morning at Netroots Nation. Newsom was the man who set in motion marriage equality in California back in 2004 by directing the San Francisco city-county clerk to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples.
Don't blink, but the Austin CBS affiliate here got a shot of PHB Saturday morning during the surprise Al Gore speech. It's near the beginning of this report. The story is entitled "Left Bloggers Claim Web Dominance Over Radio-Oriented Conservatives." Gee, doesn't that sound dangerous?

Slaying suspect once found sanctuary in S.F.
Jaxon Van Derbeken, Chronicle Staff Writer
Sunday, July 20, 2008
The man charged with killing a father and two sons on a San Francisco street last month was one of the youths who benefited from the city's long-standing practice of shielding illegal immigrant juveniles who committed felonies from possible deportation, The Chronicle has learned.
[snip]
Juvenile justice authorities locally had a policy for at least a decade of not turning over illegal immigrant felons to the federal government, interpreting San Francisco's self-proclaimed sanctuary-city status and state law as barring local officials from surrendering them for deportation.
Mayor Gavin Newsom rescinded that policy earlier this month after The Chronicle reported that the city had flown a number of youths out of the country on its own, in possible violation of federal law, and then housed some in unlocked group homes from which they quickly escaped.

A Mayor of a city with immigration/crime issues?
I'll trade 10 Pat McCrory's for half of Mayor Newsom.
needed more NC bloggers
There were not a lot from NC that I saw, and I chewed out Brad Miller about whatever was on my mind, like FISA, Karl Rove, etc. I like Brad, just had to take the opportunity.
Al Gore showing up saved Nancy Pelosi, who had trouble answering questions. After his talk, he took direct questions from the audience and then shook hands - and there were a lot of people who wanted to shake his hand.
A friend got a phone photo of him, looking impressed at my photo of our solar panels on the roof. I think I will put it on my Christmas card! I will post it when I get a copy.
