Top stories this week on the Our Troops Newsladder, 4.27.08

Here are the top stories this week related to our soldiers here and abroad, taken from the Our Troops Newsladder.

Fort Drum: The Tip of a Tragic Iceberg

What happens when you deploy troops who have seen high intensity combat time and time again with inadequate dwell time between tours? You see skyrocketing mental health issues.

After months of investigative work, talking to our troops and veterans, we released a report on the situation at Fort Drum in Watertown, New York. Since 9/11, the 2nd Brigade Combat Team has been deployed for more than forty months, more than any other brigade in the Army, and we are seeing what is nothing short of a cry for help from the men and women on the base; a cry we will answer here in North Carolina, which has seen thousands of its soldiers deployed time and time again from Fort Bragg.

Veterans Village, Guerneville Calif.

Back on Oct 14th I posted this here, and a few other sites as well as mine, about a Dream and Need by a Gold Star Mom Nadia McCaffrey in Honor to her son Sgt.Patrick McCaffrey, who was killed in Iraq by Iraqi soldiers.

Well now we can view a little of the grounds, and a brand new four story building, donated by an anonymous WWII Veteran. In this report New Veterans Program Helps Heal War Wounds from abc7news.com - San Francisco,CA..

Video below and can also be viewed at station site of report.

Senator Dole And Senator Burr: How In Good Conscience Can You Do This To Our Men And Women In Uniform?

By Bobby Muller, Veterans for America

I have a fundamental question for you two – a really simple basic question. One that every American should be asking themselves right now as you – and the rest of our Senators – get ready to return from your month-long break.

When the former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff said that our troops were at their breaking point, when the Department of Defense reported that our current deployment policies are compounding the wounds of war, causing mental health problems among our troops to skyrocket, and that one of the primary causes was our current policy of deploying troops back to Iraq and Afghanistan without adequate dwell time at home, why didn’t you do something about it?

Should you support the troops?

Pat Paints a Picture of Posies

Patrick McHenry just returned from a Congressional trip to Afghanistan where he toured the area and assessed the progress of our ongoing military efforts in that country. In one news account McHenry painted a pretty picture of what is happening in Afghanistan. He told the Hickory Record "So much attention has been focused on Iraq that Afghanistan has been ignored." Too bad he was referring to press attention and not realizing he had just described the Bush Administration's policy on the wars.

Thanks, LoftT. This is hilarious.

TrueMeckDem on Myers Park Pat

"My opinion of Pat has changed over the years. I used to think he was truly a man of the people but the longer he has been mayor, the less I think of him.

As with most cities, Charlotte has three political parties: Dem, Rep, and Chamber of Commerce. Pat is definitely the puppet of the COC here. What is good for business is good for Charlotte and Pat ... very personable guy, he has gotten a bunch of Dems in these parts to vote for him but I don't trust him."
