Progressives Have a Big Tent at the Dem Convention

Progressives Have a Big Tent at the Dem Convention

By Steven Rosenfeld, AlterNet. Posted July 14, 2008.

A tent for 800 journalists, bloggers and activists will be set up at Denver's Democratic Convention site.

Few activities are more filled with political insiders than national political party conventions. But this August in Denver, a coalition of progressive groups hopes to broaden the coverage and conversation surrounding the Democratic Convention by hosting 800 bloggers, nonprofit leaders and independent journalists.

When worlds collide: journalism and blogging in the 21st century

The Dome has a post today that opens a new and important conversation about the interplay of blogging, journalism, liability and risk. I don't expect there to be any immediate answers, but there's no doubt these issues will escalate over time. As more and more content finds its way into the blogosphere, the lines between what works and what doesn't will be hard to define. Between all the open-source content available, as well as the never-ending cross-posting and linking of images, stories, video, etc., the lines are blurring as never before.

In any case, here's the opening salvo.

keyboard commandos

Yestday on the open thread there was a conversation about the merits of netroots activism vs street action. I believe the conversation was started with this comment:

Maybe if those who think they are doing their part by being keyboard commandos will leave their comfortable chairs and take to the streets, the GOP won't be able to manipulate the vote again.

A lot of folks jumped in to defend the power of the netroots as being more effective than "protesting." While the disrespectful tone of the preceding comment prompted that reaction, I don't think it is the right one.

Trying to get a straight answer out of McCain spokesman Tucker Bounds.

BTW: I'm glad that Talking Points Memo posted this excerpt on Youtube, but since when does TiVo'ing something allow you to brand it with your logo? That's the Wild West...
