HB 2

The Law of Unintended Consequences

Raleigh could be on the verge of being chosen for the home of a new military command. The US Army is seeking a location for the Futures Command Headquarters. This group would be reponsible for the creation of weaponry to suit the needs of the coming century, replacing a trend to simply update weapons used in the last century. Ideal locations include areas with access to strong university centers, a vibrant business community, a talented and educated workforce (especially in engineering), and good quality of life. Raleigh sounds like a no-brainer.

Let's Give Social Conservatives a Reason to Hate HB 2.

Some claims are too unfounded to bother refuting. When both parties are operating under a completely different set of premises, why even try?

This is the predicament I faced upon arriving back to my hometown in North Carolina for the summer. I knew the controversy surrounding House Bill 2. I guess I just assumed it would dissipate after McCrory realized that the economic costs of the bill outweighed the benefits of proving that his sleazy backbone can keep him standing upright.

But wait.

He never realized that.

North Carolina Senior Democrats call for repeal of HB2

North Carolina Senior Democrats voted at their statewide convention in Raleigh to call for the General Assembly (NCGA) to repeal of HB2 outright and "reaffirm its support for protecting and advancing the constitutional rights and equitable treatment of all residents and its opposition to discrimination, prejudice, homophobia and transphobia."

HB 2 and the oldest trick in the book

All the debate about HB2, North Carolina’s notorious “bathroom bill” has reminded me of something that happened years ago. You won’t be surprised to hear this memory takes place in a public restroom.

The mall public bathrooms were located down a long, deserted hallway. When I realized a man was following me, I thought, “He’s probably just going to the bathroom, too. Don’t overreact… Listen to your gut. Better safe than sorry.” So, I stopped, turned around to look at him and let him pass me. As he went by, he said in an annoyed voice, “Don’t worry, I’m not going to attack you.”

Back to the future in North Carolina

Apparently HB 2 is not a big deal. Though from a discussion perspective, it has set North Carolina on fire. We only have to look at the comments section of statewide (television) online news sources for confirmation. More importantly, articles from the state’s largest newspapers.

ACLU, Lambda Legal to sue over HB2

Reports floating around social media indicate that the ACLU and Lambda Legal will be holding a press conference at 10:00 am this morning, announcing that they will be filing a challenge to NC's outrageous anti-gay law.

The ink is barely dry on the thing - this tells me that they didn't have a problem finding clients with standing to challenge the law and probably have a pretty clear idea of what's unconstitutional about it.

Surely you jest

One year ago to the month, it was about religion freedom. Another day, another disdainful bullshit session in the North Carolina General Assembly. Unfortunately, there doesn’t seem to be an end in sight. And anyone who thinks the Republican controlled NCGA is a legitimate body of organization and representation on matters pertaining to the welfare of the State is truly vacuous.
