None Of The Above

from realclearpolitics.com

By Tony Blankley

The Republican Party primary so far has been an exercise in none of the above. In their turns, Sen. McCain, former Mayor Giuliani, former Sen. Thompson and former Gov. Romney seemed to be or seemed about to be front-runners -- only to fall back as the party's likely voters got a sharper look at each of them. Even my old boss Newt Gingrich, without even announcing, had a handsome surge from 4-5 percent to 18-20 percent in February -- before falling back to single digits.

Bleeding red

Lots of bloggers have covered this, so I'm just piling on. It's the story of right-wing hypocrisy coming home to roost in the form of Mike Huckabee.

From RedState:

I'd rather pull the lever for Josef Stalin than Huckabee; he'd probably be more fiscally conservative.

And did I mention God's on Huck's side?

Remember what I said about Mike Huckabee being dangerous?

This is, by far, the best political ad I've ever seen. I had tears running down my face from laughing. Not everyone will get the joke I'm sure, but still...

I'm telling you, I agree with NONE of this man's policies, but all we can hope for is that the religious right keeps picking losers like Thompson and Guiliani, and doesn't wake up to the idea of supporting this Southern Baptist preacher in the general election. He's smart, funny, and likeable. OH, and he's a freakin' nutjob.

Why I fear Huckabee, more than any other Republican.

He is willing to say that conservatism has lost its grounding. He says all the right things to conservatives, that they care about all life, not just that in the womb. That they are supposed to be fiscally conservative, not running up big budgets.

Watch out, this is the wave of the future for Republicans. I wouldn't be surprised to see our state candidates using this approach as well. It is very alluring to those who would have been called conservative Democrats once upon a time, or Reagan Democrats since then. More videos after the break.

The Republican Who Can Win in 2008

I'm pretty bullish about our chances for taking back the White House in 2008. I think our top tier is very strong, and any of our top three candidates would be a great nominee and President.

Likewise, I like our chances against the Republican top tier. None of the GOP's big three (Giuliani, Romney, and Thompson) puts much fear into me. At this point, I'd place my bet that Romney wins the nomination, and I think we'd trounce him.

There's one Republican candidate that scares me though. Well, they all scare me, but this guy scares me because he can win. Politico has a great article about him here. I think Huckabee has several things going for him:

TrueMeckDem on Myers Park Pat

"My opinion of Pat has changed over the years. I used to think he was truly a man of the people but the longer he has been mayor, the less I think of him.

As with most cities, Charlotte has three political parties: Dem, Rep, and Chamber of Commerce. Pat is definitely the puppet of the COC here. What is good for business is good for Charlotte and Pat ... very personable guy, he has gotten a bunch of Dems in these parts to vote for him but I don't trust him."
