Onslow County Democratic Party

Organizing a County Party

I'm in the process of pushing for organization of the Onslow County Democratic Party, essentially, from scratch.

If anyone would be willing to share their County Party's charter and by-laws, I'd appreciate the references.

Also, I'm working on recommendations for operating rules. (I'm thinking along the lines of House Rules which govern all processes for submitting resolutions, organizing committees, etc).

I'm willing to make a field trip to see first-hand how your Parties are organized and would appreciate any help.

You can email me directly at thomas@brocknet.net or via the PM function here or, you know, just respond in the comments...

Onslow County Democratic Convention

The Onslow County Democratic Party held their annual convention on Saturday, April 14th, 2007.

Items of note:

  • Mr. Billy Mills, Ms. Kever Clark, Mr. Ernest Wright, Ms. Elizabeth Koen, Mr. John Burns and myself were elected as the new leadership team.
  • Ms. Jennifer Frye of Democracy N.C. was the guest speaker. She talked about the importance of getting youth involved in politics. One of the ways to do that is by funding elections with public money. If elections were conducted with equal amounts of money distributed, candidates would not need to "dial for dollars" and could engage the constituency. (For more information on Democracy NC read this post at BlueNC.)

Dumb questions from a political amateur

I defer to my wiser colleagues on a few dumb questions...

Many local elected offices are considered non-partisan (County commissions, City councils, etc).

How involved can local Democratic Party's be in the campaign processes for these offices?

Are Party endorsements legal/ethical within the rules?

What about building a Democratic base within the County/City structure of citizen boards and commissions?

Is it legal/ethical to attempt to have Democrats nominated to these boards and commissions?

Thank you all for your information and my apologies for asking perhaps the most ignorant of questions...

Where I've been..

I've been a little dodgy and haven't participated lately. I apologize, but it's been for a good cause, I promise.

Several days after the election, I took a big step in my role as a Progressive and activist within Onslow County: I registered as a Democrat.

As a Democrat, I thought I should attend a recent meeting of the Onslow County Democratic party (which I did). I was by far the youngest person in the room (the next youngest was a fellow in his mid-to-upper 30s). I was appointed to do several things...Among these are recruit young members to the Democratic Party, get these young members to become active in the Party and charter a Young Democrats group.

Any advice given will be greatly appreciated.
