Preamble to War?

Foxx, Shuler, Coble, and Miller have all put their name on House Concurrent Resolution 362 that expresses Iran's threat to US interests and demands that Bush impose strict sanctions.

Shuler/ Carter Event in Winston (Why you should attend)

I am happy to announce a special fundraising event in Winston-Salem on May 15 with Congressman Heath Shuler. We are honored to have his support and are looking forward to this exciting event. Details follow.

I hope that you will all attend, and if you can't attend, I hope that you will still make a donation. Coach Carter needs you now more than ever.

This is why.

Shuler's Dilemma

HR-4, Medicare Prescription Drug Price Negotiation Act

Here are the votes on HR-4, Medicare Prescription Drug Price Negotiation Act.

The total votes were 255 votes "Yea," and 170 votes "No," which is 35 votes short of what it will take to override Bush's promised veto. Only Walter Jones crossed party lines on this one.

District 01 Butterfield, G K (D) - Yea
District 02 Etheridge, Bob (D) - Yea
District 03 Jones, Walter B Jr (R) - Yea
District 04 Price, David (D) - Yea
District 05 Foxx, Virginia (R) - No
District 06 Coble, Howard (R) - No
District 07 McIntyre, Mike (D) - Yea
District 08 Hayes, Robin (R) - No
District 09 Myrick, Sue (R) - No
District 10 McHenry, Patrick (R) - No
District 11 Shuler, Heath (D) - Yea
District 12 Watt, Melvin L (D) - Yea
District 13 Miller, Brad (D) - Yea

Once again, we see the Party of Greed following their marching orders from big pharma. If it's OK for the VA to negotiate lower drug prices, how can it not be OK for Medicare, too?

Shuler, Edwards, and the promise of a "Better America"

So I just posted this over at DailyKos. Please go and rec it up!!! Lets get the word out about what is going on here.

“America is better than this!”

That was John Edwards refrain today at a rally for Heath Shuler that he attended in Asheville, NC (NC-11).

While Shuler was supposed to be the main player today (after all he is the one running for office right?), John Edwards stole the show. It was quickly obvious to this veteran from NH primary season that what we were hearing was a very early form of a stump speech from Edwards. But before I get there, let’s talk about what Shuler had to say first.

The essence of Shuler speech was changing the course. He spoke of bringing high paying jobs back into the district (we have been hard hit by the textile mills leaving the area for points south). This was spoken in conjunction with renewable energy and energy independence. One of Shuler lines that got the greatest response was: “We must change the course in Iraq because it’s not acceptable.” Keep in mind that this is from a Dem running in a “conservative” Southern district. I guess he got the memo that the war just wasn’t playing well. To be fair, he did not say what the course change would consist of, but it hardly seemed to matter to the crowd. The fact that both Shuler and Edwards have young children was brought up several times in the “Let’s do it for them” kind of way, particularly in relation to Healthcare. After a very brief introduction, Edwards came up and stole the show.

3rd Qtr Fundraising Totals

Totals per Congressional Quarterly.

Notes: Being an incumbent usually gives you a huge $ advantage. We have 3 challengers doing quite well. Brad Miller and Mel Watt both have challengers who have raised a considerable amount of money.

2 & 7-Etheridge and McIntire are sitting on a lot of cash. Except compared to Taylor and Hayes, who each have more than $1 million on hand. Look for the airwaves to get real ugly very soon.

5-Foxx outspent Sharpe 4 to 1.

8-Hayes outspent Kissell 2 to 1.

11-Taylor outspent Shuler 4 to 1.

13-Robinson outspent Miller 2 to 1, but Miller has more cash on hand.

NC-11: We're winning the sign war

Cross-posted from NC House Races
=======================

This weekend, my girlfriend and I went to a wedding at beautiful Lake Lure, North Carolina. On Saturday, we took a drive from Lake Lure up to Asheville, traveling along US 74 through some truly lovely country.

Anyway, the point of this post isn’t to blather on about my weekend. What I noticed as I drove to Asheville was the amazing profusion of Heath Shuler and WNC Democrats signs along the road – and the total absence of Charles Taylor signs. Now, I’m sure that the GOP will get their sign operation up and running soon enough. But Democrats in the western part of the state are doing one hell of a great job making their support visible. [Some press on the sign campaign here and some background from Henderson County Democrats here.] And especially in the 11th District, where I saw so many Shuler signs and not a single Taylor sign.

NC-11: The debate debate

Cross-posted from NC House Races
=======================

As I wrote here, Charles Taylor has seen the writing on the wall and has decided to try a Hail Mary pass – he’s declared that he is ready to debate his Democratic challenger, Heath Shuler. It would mark the first time Taylor has debated an opponent since 1994.

That is, if it actually happens. The campaigns have apparently deadlocked over the date of the proposed debate – Taylor wants October 29th, Shuler wants November 1st.

NC-11: Taylor FINALLY agrees to debate!

Wow. I guess even corrupt wingunts like Charles Taylor can see the writing on the wall, because he's finally agreed to debate Heath Shuler:

For the first time since the 1994 election, U.S. Rep. Charles Taylor has agreed to debate his opponent.

Taylor agreed Thursday to a televised debate — with conditions — against Democratic Challenger Heath Shuler. The challenger said he tentatively agreed to debate. The date and format will have to be worked out.

NC-HOUSE: Foley fallout, Tarheel style

Cross-posted from NC House Races
=======================

Interesting AP article on how different campaigns in North Carolina are dealing with the fallout from Predatorgate.

Short version: Kissell is asking questions about what Hayes knew about Foley and when, while Shuler isn't linking Taylor to Foley at all.

My favorite part:

So for a second day in a row the focus was on Hayes, seeking a fifth term representing a district that stretches from Charlotte to Fayetteville. On Monday, Kissell's campaign noted Foley was responsible for lining up GOP votes on the July 2005 Central American Free Trade Agreement, which passed only after Hayes switched his vote at the last minute to support the White House-backed trade deal.

TrueMeckDem on Myers Park Pat

"My opinion of Pat has changed over the years. I used to think he was truly a man of the people but the longer he has been mayor, the less I think of him.

As with most cities, Charlotte has three political parties: Dem, Rep, and Chamber of Commerce. Pat is definitely the puppet of the COC here. What is good for business is good for Charlotte and Pat ... very personable guy, he has gotten a bunch of Dems in these parts to vote for him but I don't trust him."
