Topic of the week

I was struck this morning by a comment on another blog by a person writing under the name UNCGOP.

Perhaps if the DOT and its croonies (sic) would have wisely and effectively spent money for the past year, then we would not be facing a state that used to be known for its road (sic), yet now can not even stake that claim.

Hey General Assembly! When you convene tomorrow and you're looking to do something that would actually make a positive difference immediately, consider passing a bottle bill.

Our friends in the newspaper industry are increasingly working through virtual channels. Along the way, many reporters find themselves over-extended, being asked by management to cover their beats and write their news stories, but also keep up blogs, respond to reader comments, and even deliver multi-media content. And it all comes at a time when the vanishing newspaper is the talk of the trade.

In the spirit of blog-love, this week's topic is Online Sunshine, happily borrowed from our friends at Under the Dome. To kick things off, I ask the following question: Why is it that official newspaper bloggers almost never post on other blogs?

We may have known this in our conventional wisdom, but seeing it so clearly demonstrated is humbling: we are not in charge of our brains.

Let's talk about golf, which according to a clever article in the New York Times, is experiencing a precipitous decline. That can't be good for North Carolina ... or can it?

This topic was inspired by a diary at Daily Kos about sexism in politics and how it's affecting the Clinton campaign. I happen to think the diarist is dead on.

In any case, have at it. The topic of the week is sex.

Given the wide-ranging discussion that's been going on, what should we rename the Vance-Aycock and Jefferson-Jackson dinners? Should we continue to honor dead white racists, or might a little cultural sensitivity be in order?

How blogging works is a mystery to me. Surprising things happen all the time. Some stuff sticks for awhile. A lot more doesn't. It's a blur of information, and focus is hard to find. I've been wondering lately if a weekly theme might have any value.

So without further adieu, here is our first-ever topic of the week, complete with a fancy blue button you may soon be able to push.
