Winston-Salem Jaycees Propose Town Hall Meeting to Perdue/McCrory Camps

Winston-Salem Jaycees, who boost one of the state’s largest and most active chapters, have given the campaigns of gubernatorial candidates Bev Perdue and Pat McCrory something to think about. They have proposed a Town Hall meeting in Winston-Salem– the only major media market snubbed in the debate schedule.

Perdue's consistent support for education

I know there's a sort of do-no-harm sensibility in talking about some of our leaders. In fact, I don't post much here because of it. But I think there's a place and time for asking questions and ensuring that accurate information gets shared.

So there's an ad on television that says strange things about Bev Perdue's legislative record. And the topic of the ad is education, which is, candidly, Perdue's strongest suit. Her credentials, her professional career and her legislative work all point to a leader who's for education.

I read Gary Pearce's blog post on Thursday, and read James's post on Thursday night, that included a response note from Perdue or the people who work for her.

Since I Disappeared. . .

A lot has happened since I disappeared from this site, which I enjoyed reading, posting, and commenting on from the springtime when I discovered this wonderful forum of people and their ideas.

I landed a great job in Chapel Hill, and I'm trying to sell my house in Forsyth County, which means I'm commuting 65 mins one way each day. So much for blogging time, and a lot of other things, for that matter.

So I thought I'd check in with you guys on a rare day off with some random thoughts.

To everyone from Winston-Salem: How can we stop the Northern Beltway?

In 1989, North Carolina passed the Highway Trust Fund Act, which, among other things, provided for the creation of loop highways around Charlotte, Raleigh, Greensboro, Winston-Salem, Durham, Wilmington, and Asheville. So far, beltways have been completed in Charlotte, Raleigh, and Asheville, and are under construction in Wilmington and Greensboro. Durham has rejected the beltway.

This leaves Winston-Salem, which has plans for a beltway to begin construction in 2011. It has been held up by funding problems and a lawsuit.

TrueMeckDem on Myers Park Pat

"My opinion of Pat has changed over the years. I used to think he was truly a man of the people but the longer he has been mayor, the less I think of him.

As with most cities, Charlotte has three political parties: Dem, Rep, and Chamber of Commerce. Pat is definitely the puppet of the COC here. What is good for business is good for Charlotte and Pat ... very personable guy, he has gotten a bunch of Dems in these parts to vote for him but I don't trust him."
