Taliban Stam: Trade textbooks for teachers' assistants

From the tainted well of "bright ideas":

The House proposal would cut about half the teacher assistants. According to the state Department of Public Instruction, that would amount to 11,086 jobs. Stam said district superintendents could compensate for those cuts by moving money from other places such as textbooks to hire the teacher assistants they need.

Under almost any circumstances, drawing funds away from textbooks would be idiotic. But considering there was no funding for textbooks in the 2009-2011 Budget, and virtually nothing in the GOP's proposed budget, this "books for people" solution by Stam doesn't even rise to the level of idiotic. At least an idiot can tie his shoes and comb his hair.

That shows he has no idea

That shows he has no idea about what is going on in the schools. In my county we haven't bought new ones in several years. My school doesn't have enough books in my subject to distribute one to each child so we just use them as needed in the classroom. Now of course textbooks should never be the main focus of instruction but they have their place and without them, or enough of them or enough of them that aren't falling apart, instruction does suffer.

Personally I think if you can buy a Kendle for less than $120 we should be able to purchase one of them (or something like it) for each student with each of their textbooks with all the whistles and bells loaded on it for a lot less than the cost of purchasing hard copies.

I'm a moderate Democrat.

Not a bad idea, Huh

And I bet they could get a much better price buying in volume. Although, you still have to purchase the text of the textbooks...

Republicans killing more jobs

The House proposal would cut about half the teacher assistants. According to the state Department of Public Instruction, that would amount to 11,086 jobs.

When are they going to start creating jobs? Just how much more can the state endure?

Progressives are the true conservatives.
